OK sorry to be goady but I know no one in rl who uses these most people have never heard of them and when they do they turn their noses up and would never want to use such a thing. Obviously great for those that do use it very green and eco friendly well done you but I cannot begin to contemplate using one I have super heavy periods low in iron because of and having to empty and wash that out getting covered in blood especially in public loos well... Why the hell would you far too much of a palaver if u ask me. Did buy some period pants but that's only so if leak it doesn't go everywhere but haven't even used those either.

I used one for 16 years and it is great. But I havent felt the need to tell many people, its not great family dinner chat.

OrangeSharked · 10/06/2021 17:24

I know a couple of people who use them but can't say I really know the sanpro choices of all my friends

In my eyes their great. I have always found tampons and pads to be quite messy with heavy flow. Mooncup I remove over the toilet so if I spill it goes in the toilet, I find it way more controlled than any of the other methods. I can wash my hands sitting on the toilet at home or the cup if needs be. At work I just clean it with toilet paper until I get home.

For me, the absolutely biggest bonus if your heavy is you will never run out of sanpro. If you've got your moon Cup you can never get that horrible moment where you realise you need to change but don't have a spare. Or you've started your period but you haven't got anything in, maybe I'm just disorganised but no matter how many times I need to empty my moon cup you've always got protection. I feel much safer

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/06/2021 17:25

I persevered for 6 months then gave up. I really wanted it to work for me, but it didn't.

Now I have mirena I don't have periods so all's well that ends well

I started using then with a job that had unisex loos, and most of the loos didn't have bins it. I could never remember which loo I was supposed to use with the bin so it solved that issue

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 10/06/2021 17:28

how do u know when it needs changing and how the hell do you know what size u need how often do they need replacing as in buying a new one and is it OK to not rinse it everytime? In hot weather i imagine it's much more. Convenient then?

I just empty mine about every 8-12 hours. I don't have super heavy periods though and there is pretty much always space in the cup. If it ever gets completely full I can "feel" that I'm starting to have a little leakage and I empty it.

Each model will guide you on what size to order.

I used the same one for years and years. It's medical grade silicone, it lasts. I just gave it an occasional thorough wash and used a microwave sterilising pouch left over from baby bottles to sterilise it. If I ever need to change it in a public loos cubicle, I just give the inside a quick wipe with toilet paper instead of rinsing it. No problem.

I've used one exclusively for 10+ years and I'm in my late 30s. Bought/needed zero other products in that time. I've never had cause to discuss my sanitary ware with another woman once I got out of my teens. My only "problem" with them is that on the last few days of my period I sometimes forget it's there at all. You can also put them in preemptively when you're due on and when I was TTC, I used to stick one in after fertile week sex. Which quickly led to me not needing it again for a while. Ahem. Grin

I’ve used one for over 10 years now. Last year I had an issue with my coil which meant I bled almost constantly for nearly a year and wore it 24/7 no issues at all. I wouldn’t have dared do that with tampons. If I’m at home I rinse under the tap, if I ever change it while I’m out I just wipe with a bit of dry loo roll and reinsert. Occasionally get a bit of blood on my fingers but no more than changing a tampon.

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 10/06/2021 17:37

I use one, I am also super heavy, on bad days I have to empty every few hours on good days morning and night. I do feel a bit anxious about public loos because I have to rinse it out before putting it back in.
I too wouldn’t go back to any other product.

spanishchica · 10/06/2021 17:40

I love my moon cup. Changed my life!

Itstheprinciple · 10/06/2021 17:44

I have a couple of questions.
Can you swim with one? Can you feel it when you are moving around? I get icky when I use tampons as they make me panicky and feel like I have to pull it out right now.

UnitedRoad · 10/06/2021 17:48

I’m nearly 50 and been using one for about 8 years. It’s not a branded one just a cheap one from Amazon. I’ve just looked and it’s still there for around £3.50.

My periods are very heavy, but this offers much better protection than pads or tampons. On the heaviest days I’ll use a pad as well but only for my own peace of mind.

As for what age people are, obviously I’m 49, but my 20 year old also uses one, and 22 year said I was disgusting when I asked if she’d like me to buy her one. I don’t know if any of my friends use them, but they wouldn’t know that I do either.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/06/2021 17:51

You can swim with a mooncup but I prefer a tampon for swimming only, my mooncup always needed emptying immediately after swimming. I can feel mine sometimes, if I've got the position slightly wrong but more importantly when it needs to be emptied.

LondonStone · 10/06/2021 17:54

I’ve just bought one (I’m 31) and I love it. I didn’t have periods for 8 or 9 years due to the implant and I felt all out of practice when they started again late last year. At one point I sat on the toilet and cried thinking I would have to put the implant back in because I hated all the period faff on so much.

I’ve struggled through for months before trying a Mooncup and it’s made me much happier personally. It’s comfortable, easy to clean, good for the environment, no monthly costs, good for travelling. I’ve used it twice (as in two periods) and I’m converted. Actually told my sister about Mooncup a couple of days ago and she’s interested. You can get them from Boots, Holland Barrett and a million places online, ASOS sell them and often have 20% off.

DowntonCrabby · 10/06/2021 17:57

I’ve used one for 10+ years but only in the last 2 maybe years have I known of others to talk about using one too.
Unless you’re chatting about periods with loads of people how could you possibly know?!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 10/06/2021 17:58

@NeverDropYourMoonCup I can imagine that would be messy. Grin

squishmittens · 10/06/2021 18:01

I have one, but find it unbearably uncomfortable. There's no position that I can get it in to that isn't incredibly painful after about 10 minutes. I wish I could use one though - they're otherwise brilliant.

christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 10/06/2021 18:02

I've used one since my periods returned after my daughter was born 6 years ago. Last week I was away for a few days, forgot the mooncup and bought tampax. I had an epic flood having soaked through a super tampax in an hour and a half and had to buy an emergency pair of jeans from H&M. That has never ever happened with the mooncup. It's just SO much easier.

Hae you cut the tail off?
copperpotsalot · 10/06/2021 18:04

Bleaughhh tried it once and was nearly sick.

None of my friends use them

Treezan82 · 10/06/2021 18:04

I use one, have for years. Can't really imagine using anything else now, it's just the norm. I always used to soak through tampons and pads were ok but I just feel mooncups make me feel a bit cleaner.

miltonj · 10/06/2021 18:10

I know loads of people who use them. I had one for a while but found it uncomfortable. And hated putting it in and the horrendous feeling of taking it out. I don't have particularly heavy periods but I used one when I went on a 6 hour coach trip and when I got to my friends house I took it out and it was complete my full and blood went everywhere! Confused (I cleaned it up and no one was any the wiser but still)!. It did come in handy when I went to a water park but other than that I wouldn't consider using one again.., I stick to trusty pads!

squishmittens · 10/06/2021 18:15

@christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby yes, I cut all of it off the first day!

HelenHywater · 10/06/2021 18:15

I've used one for years and years. No idea whether any of my friends (those who are still menstruating anyway as we're all old) or indeed anyone else uses one.

I don't know anyone who uses period pants or reusable pads either but that doesn't mean they don't (and I think they are far more unpleasant than a mooncup, mind you, for that matter I think sticking a piece of cotton wool up your fanjo is pretty unpleasant too).

hedgehogger1 · 10/06/2021 18:16

I use mine. Think it's fab.

Concestor · 10/06/2021 18:19

I'm mid 40s and have been using a cup for about three years now. I love it, it's so easy and much nicer.

MsSquiz · 10/06/2021 18:28

I've only been using mine for 6 months but I'm a definite convert. Since having DD I was finding tampons uncomfortable (and I've used them for over 20 years!)
I've found tampons were obviously absorbing my natural fluid as well as period, whereas the mooncup is really comfortable and I've had significantly less painful cramps (not sure if they're related or just coincidence)

I empty my mooncup exactly as I would change a tampon, every 4-6 hours, or more so on heavier days.
I've yet to have to empty it while in public toilets, but I imagine emptying it down the toilet and rinsing with some bottled water won't be overly difficult.

It's really not much different to tampons
