OK sorry to be goady but I know no one in rl who uses these most people have never heard of them and when they do they turn their noses up and would never want to use such a thing. Obviously great for those that do use it very green and eco friendly well done you but I cannot begin to contemplate using one I have super heavy periods low in iron because of and having to empty and wash that out getting covered in blood especially in public loos well... Why the hell would you far too much of a palaver if u ask me. Did buy some period pants but that's only so if leak it doesn't go everywhere but haven't even used those either.

I've had one for about 15 years. Lots of people I know have them. I find them way more comfortable than tampons.

justfuckoffthelottayer · 10/06/2021 15:41

So how do u not get it everywhere when u take it out I'm willing to be educated how do u not get on hands or spill it? Also e interesting to know ages of those that use it as maybe I am older and stuck in ways? Also never seen one in shops do they sell them. If u changed from years of using other products and had super heavy periods how do u get over the fear of it not working?

@SarahAndQuack

Nope, you're absolutely right, every single woman in the world is viscerally disgusted by them. And they're probably made by lizards with mind-control devices.

Happy now?

Grin

Yes, and they definitely transmit alien propaganda to your fillings.

A lot of women I know use them. I tried more than once, but I have a weird cervix and it seemed not to work for me. Friends with extremely heavy periods liked them because they didn’t require regular changing during the working day, like tampons. If you soak through even the most heavy duty tampon and pad in an hour or less, surely you can see the appeal of something that lasts way longer and is reliably leak-free?

I’ve found they are better for heavy periods than pads/tampons.

feistymumma · 10/06/2021 15:42

Been using a mooncup for over ten years

duckegg1 · 10/06/2021 15:42

About half of my friends use them. Mid 20's.

sociallydistained · 10/06/2021 15:43

I’ve worn a mooncup since I was 17 and I’m now 34. In fact I’ve only just replaced the one I had all of those years with a new one Blush Gamechanger for me! My first was the proper moo cup but my second was a £6 one from Amazon and it’s exactly the same!

My best friend thought they were a disgusting concept for many years then she got very much into saving the environment and decided to get one. She found it really hard work and was almost scared of using it after a few tries so hasnt used it since but wishes she could. Took me a while to get used to I admit but cant imagine not having one now.

DeeCeeCherry · 10/06/2021 15:43

My daughter uses them.

How would you know who does and doesn't use them anyway, do you go around asking?!

I hope the period troll isn't back...

If this is real, there's so much info online about mooncups and how to use them.

Krook · 10/06/2021 15:43

Been using mine for about 16 years...

Bibidy · 10/06/2021 15:44

Ummm I use one Grin and have for a couple of years now.

I had the same worries as you re public loos at first but tbh it's hardly different to removing and replacing a tampon. You literally just empty the cup into the toilet and then I just clean mine with toilet paper if there isn't a sink to rinse.

I actually find it so much more convenient because (depending on how heavy you are obvs) you can leave it in for much longer than a tampon. Sometimes I literally put it in in the morning and don't empty until bedtime, and I'd say my periods aren't light.

I did try reusable towels and I found those uncomfortable as they are much thicker than normal sanitary towels, but I do still sometimes use them at the end of my period as one disadvantage of the cups is you can't always tell when the bleeding is slowing if you leave it in for a few hours at a time.

There’s a method for taking it out you do not spill it unless it’s a really heavy day and it’s full or spilling already then yes you might get a bit of blood on your fingers. I rinse it all down the plug and rinse the cup round and re insert.
Justmuddlingalong · 10/06/2021 15:48

I started using mine to deal with really heavy periods. Your description of using one sounds more like fisting, with a mental image of Sissy Spacek in Carrie.

xyzandabc · 10/06/2021 15:49

I used to use one, prefer reusable pads now. You don't need to empty it as often as you would change a pad if you are heavy, so surely that's a bonus to start with.

If you've never used one, why do you think you would get covered in blood? You take it out, empty it in to the toilet, quick wipe with toilet paper, pop it back in. Though tbh I don't ever recall having to change it in a public toilet. So if at home I prob would give it a little rinse.

Disposable pads or tampons, remembering to buy them, making sure you have enough spares in the right bag/pocket, having to wrap them up, find a bin to put them in, that sounds like a palaver to me. Not to mention the landfill. Why would you? Each to their own, eh?

Tinkling · 10/06/2021 15:50

I use one, I’d say half of my friends use them too.

firstimemamma · 10/06/2021 15:50

A few shops on my local high street sell moon cups including boots. People are obviously buying them.

I don't use moon cups. I use either tampons or period pants. I love my period pants!

I am 32 :)

So when you take it out, you literally just reach in slightly to pinch the bottom of the cup and release the suction, and then you just pull it out slowly. If you don't tip it over nothing will spill and if in correctly everything is captured inside the cup so it's not messy at all.

I am not sure re shops that sell them as I ordered mine online (Organicup) but would guess maybe Boots or potentially somewhere like Holland and Barrett.

As for fear of not working, it's the same as worrying a tampon won't work. If it's in correctly there is no way that it won't work because it's literally blocking the way for the blood to get out. But if you wanted to give one a go you could always wear a sanitary towel as reassurance while you're getting used to it :)

I have genuinely found it so much better and love that I'm not constantly putting tampons in my bathroom bin/smuggling them through to the kitchen bin.

With a bit of practice it’s very easy to remove and then simply tip down the loo - lots of people remove it in the shower when first getting the hang of it but it really isn’t that messy. You may well get a tiny bit on your fingers but just wash your hands and all is well.

Boots and Superdrug sell them.

The fear thing again is practice as you get to know your cycle and how often you should empty. Period pants offer a nice backup for reassurance that any leaks will be absorbed.

Whosaidit · 10/06/2021 15:51

I use one and so do several of my friends. One friend said she couldn’t as her period is too heavy but since a mooncup holds two tampons worth that’s not an issue

Tinkling · 10/06/2021 15:51

P.S I have never needed to empty mine in a public loo. I empty it 12 hourly.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/06/2021 15:51

I’ve used one for 15 years now Confused

Bibidy · 10/06/2021 15:52

I would actually recommend a cup for heavy flow as you need to empty it far less than you need to change a towel or tampon. Plus the time you can leave it in for (I think mine is up to 11 hours) means I rarely ever need to do anything with it outside of home because it can wait.

wonkylegs · 10/06/2021 15:52

@justfuckoffthelottayer I found a moon cup too difficult to use with the arthritis in my hands but do use washable pads.
I have a very heavy period with flooding but haven't had a problem with them.
I must admit I tend to advertise that I use them but do tell people if asked.
I started wearing them because I wanted to be greener but they are also much more comfortable so I am a convert.

feesh · 10/06/2021 15:53

I’ve been using mine for 15 years! I’m 44. I only empty it at night and in the morning. I only have one heavy day, and to be honest it just overflows and I wear Modi-body pants on that day. I love it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/06/2021 15:54

They are amazing and really comfortable. You do have to be fairly comfortable with putting your fingers in your vagina though if you get one without a stem (which is most comfortable IMO).

TheSmallAssassin · 10/06/2021 15:55

I've used a Mooncup or washable pads for about the last 16 years, I'm early 50s now, so not long to go.

I bought my Mooncup in Boots - including an emergency one having forgotten to take mine on holiday and not being able to bear going back to anything else!
