OK sorry to be goady but I know no one in rl who uses these most people have never heard of them and when they do they turn their noses up and would never want to use such a thing. Obviously great for those that do use it very green and eco friendly well done you but I cannot begin to contemplate using one I have super heavy periods low in iron because of and having to empty and wash that out getting covered in blood especially in public loos well... Why the hell would you far too much of a palaver if u ask me. Did buy some period pants but that's only so if leak it doesn't go everywhere but haven't even used those either.

I do! I love mine. They've revolutionised periods for me tbh. Never gave to worry about washing pads or buying tampons, never caught unawares. Really comfy.

L0V315 · 10/06/2021 16:07

I have been using a menstrual cup for 20 years, so much better than tampons, even managed an army survival week out in the boonies with a friend when I was on my period, where we had no tap water or lavatories!

TheBobJog · 10/06/2021 16:08

@Shelovesamystery

Ugh I really want to use one but I tried and I just couldn't get on with it. Could never get it to stay put. It just kept sliding down to the point that I could feel it, it was uncomfortable and plus it then leaked. And the fourth month I used it it gave me thrush, never had thrush before in my life Confused

Someone tell me where I was going wrong please.

Not sure if it would help, but after a few 'feeling it' issues, I wore my mooncup turned inside out. I never felt it at all then, and never leaked.

I figured I just have a short vagina Grin

I was a 6-8 super plus tampon person for years and switched to a cup a few years ago, I only need to empty it once on my heavy days, but do take the opportunity if there’s a bathroom with a sink in as it is easier if the sink is right there.

On heavy days I find that it’s cleaner to empty it into the sink rinse it and bob it back in then run the sink for a minute to make sure it’s all gone properly.

I do sometimes on heavy days get mess on my fingers putting it back in, but I did with a tampon too. If there’s no sink in the cubicle I just wipe it off on loo roll or a baby wipe and the then wash properly outside.

I wish I’d swapped 20 years ago.

TheOrigRights · 10/06/2021 16:10

@TheLovelinessOfDemons

The people who use them: on heavy days, how do you avoid making a mess while emptying them and washing them out? Don't you bleed everywhere?
You don't have to wash it out every time you empty it, as long as your hands are clean, you can sit on the loo, dump the contents and re-insert.

Then use tissue to clean up a bit before washing your hands.

It can get a bit messy, but you learn how to manage. I'm fortunate to work from home and I can run my hands under the tap while sitting on the loo.

LawrenceChaney22 · 10/06/2021 16:10

My friend and I both use them and we are 24/25.

I get heavy periods but I still find a moon cup very useful and it does hold a good amount of blood. I do still find it kind of messy if I'm honest but I don't think I would return to using tampons or pads. Plus cost efficient which is always a plus for me and a heavy period....

CurlsLDN · 10/06/2021 16:12

@Shelovesamystery they come in different sizes, sounds like perhaps yours was too small? Women who have given birth need a larger size.

Op they sell them in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's etc next to the rest of the sanpro.

Firenight · 10/06/2021 16:12

I've been using one for about 15 years. Between that and some washable back up pads for nights I don't use anything else. Saves money and better for the environment.

Added bonus that using a mooncup stops post sex leakage too which can be convenient.

LittleTiger007 · 10/06/2021 16:13

@justfuckoffthelottayer

So how do u not get it everywhere when u take it out I'm willing to be educated how do u not get on hands or spill it? Also e interesting to know ages of those that use it as maybe I am older and stuck in ways? Also never seen one in shops do they sell them. If u changed from years of using other products and had super heavy periods how do u get over the fear of it not working?
I’m in my 40s and as stated above i wish I’d used it years ago. You pull in out sitting in the toilet and pour it away down the toilet. I rinse it under the tap and reuse and once a day immerse it in boiling water to make sure it’s sanitary. I bought mine on Amazon. It was 100% more reliable than tampons that leaked because I was having hideously heavy periods.
RestingPandaFace · 10/06/2021 16:14

I could weep when I think of how much money I’ve spent on Sanpro over the last 30 years, when I could have bought a handful of cups I’ve the same time.

TheOrigRights · 10/06/2021 16:14

One of the BIG advantages (especially as I get older and my cycles are a bit more erratic), is that I can insert it overnight or wear to a running race 'just in case'.

KeepingTrack · 10/06/2021 16:16

I’m working with women.
I’d say that they are getting more and more common, both mooncup and period pants.

When 10 years ago, mooncup were ‘strange’, they are now all mainstream imo.

FWIW I also know quite a few women with flooding periods who use a mooncup. They are all saying they are easier and better than tampon. Often women see their periods become a bit lighter too.

Unfortunately I think that nowadays, it’s you who is a ‘bit behind the times’.

HavelockVetinari · 10/06/2021 16:18

I finally bought one after years of reading about them on MN. Total gamechanger! I have very heavy periods (bloody perimenopause) and it's loads better at keeping things contained than tampons or pads. When I first started using it I wore a backup liner, but it was totally unnecessary.

As others have said, you pull it out slowly so as not to spill it on your fingers, then tip it down the loo. Then wash your hands, obviously. Since tampons so often leaked for me (heavy periods) I got far more blood on my fingers pulling those out than with the moon cup.

P.S. if you're actually a period troll getting off on a menstruation fetish - you are a perve and a loser.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 10/06/2021 16:18

I use Organicup, much softer than the Moon cup. Just got 2 for the price of one and I think I've hit perimenopause, so my periods are much more erratic.

I wish I had moved to them much sooner, probably been using them for about 3 years.

oohyoudevilyou · 10/06/2021 16:21

I have one but only use it when I'm at home, and stick with tampons when I'm out and about. I'm not keen on using public and work loos for rinsing it, but for me, that's the only negative.

Yes, I know I could carry a small bottle of water for rinsing but I just don't want to, and figure that if I cut down on tampons by even 50%, it's made a difference.

UpSlyDown · 10/06/2021 16:22

I used a mooncup for years and now use that combined with washable sanitary pads. I would like to try to period pants but they're quite expensive and I don't 'need' them but I will definitely be giving my two daughters the sustainable options (along with all options- their choice) when the time comes. So so much better for the environment- I find disposable sanitary products quite horrendous now and feel a bit guilty about the many years I used them. I'm not an eco warrior but trying to be much more aware (haven't used cling film in about 2 years now which I am proud of!).

dannydyerismydad · 10/06/2021 16:27

I bloody love mine. I have heavy periods and a cup holds so much more than a tampon. It's really liberating not having to have to sort myself out every hour, and has saved me a fortune too.

Seasidevibes · 10/06/2021 16:28

I’ve been using mine a few years, I know a few of my friends also use them.
I used to have extremely heavy periods, I’d put a tampon in and a heavy flow sanitary towel and flood them within an hour on days 2-3 of my period, would last 3 hours on later days of period. My bleeding has got much lighter since changing to a cup, and on my very heavy days which occasionally still happen, I can just pop to loo, empty cup and pop back in. If I’m out and about I take a small bottle of water to rinse out cup whilst still in toilet cubicle.

BoringBettie · 10/06/2021 16:29

I use one but I don’t go round announcing it! You don’t get ‘covered in blood’, certainly less mess than I’ve ever had with pads and tampons were just too painful. I wish I’d started using one a lot sooner!!

PawsQueen · 10/06/2021 16:31

I use a cup, and reusable pads

Castlepeak · 10/06/2021 16:34

I only use mine for part of my cycle. It doesn’t work for me on my heavy days, but at the end of the week when things are lighter, it gives my delicate tissues a break from the irritation or even the most hypo-allergenic disposable tampons I can find. I find a mix works well for me.

As for period pants and reusable pads, well those I don’t have any option. I haven’t found a disposable product that doesn’t give me hives. I’m just thankful there are now so many products on the market. I spent years sewing my own and they were certainly not the sleek wonders available these days.

Angel2702 · 10/06/2021 16:35

I’ve used them for 14 years and would never use anything g else. As for being covered in blood in public how do you manage to change any other sanitary protection? No different from changing a tampon. They are also designed to not need to be emptied as often as you’d change tampons and pads so many people don’t even need to do so in public.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 10/06/2021 16:39

@nina3638 No, I really meant in that short time when you have nothing in. I'd assumed you'd need 2, so you can put the other one in straight away while you're emptying/washing out the first one.

RampantIvy · 10/06/2021 16:40

I had never heard of them until I joined MN. Why aren't they advertised?

I stopped having periods years ago, but I would have used them had I known of their existence.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/06/2021 16:44

In over 40 years of periods, I’ve never discussed what I use with another person. Who discusses Moon cups or, even worse, period pants over a coffee with your pals.
