OK sorry to be goady but I know no one in rl who uses these most people have never heard of them and when they do they turn their noses up and would never want to use such a thing. Obviously great for those that do use it very green and eco friendly well done you but I cannot begin to contemplate using one I have super heavy periods low in iron because of and having to empty and wash that out getting covered in blood especially in public loos well... Why the hell would you far too much of a palaver if u ask me. Did buy some period pants but that's only so if leak it doesn't go everywhere but haven't even used those either.

I love mine! Pop it in and have never leaked. Absolute game changer for me. I now feel safe wearing skirts/dresses, doing exercise, generally going about life! I leave mine in for around 8-10 hours and I fill it to around the 8ml mark (so still plenty of "space").
I hate sitting in pads & I always leaked with tampons.

Honestly can't recommend them enough!

bigbadbedknobs · 10/06/2021 15:55

I used to use one, a life saver, when really heavy and it was heavy, used to double up with a pad just in case
Then I got tranexemic acid from the doc and not so heavy, even better. Would recommend to anyone, don't knock it til you've tried it

frazzledasarock · 10/06/2021 15:56

I’ve been using them for about 14 years. I found as I started using a mooncup my period became less painful and slightly less heavy.

I take a bottle of clean water into the toilet with me and wash the mooncup out each time I change it.
I use washable pads on heavy days in case of leakage.

i’ve always had very painful and heavy periods and use mooncups. they’re brilliant!

toto23 · 10/06/2021 15:56

I don't broadcast that I use them. If it comes up in a conversation then I'll mention it, for example at work they were trying to organise a locker of tampons/pads for emergencies and I said I had no idea what products/brands to put in as I don't use them, I use a mooncup.

I bought my first mooncup a decade ago, have never went back to tampons/pads. The sight of my own blood does not phase me and a mooncup is a hell of a lot less irritating than a tampon that I just can't use anymore.

I wasn't trying to be environmentally friendly buying a mooncup, just at the time it was quite hard to get tampons/pads and where I could get them they were so expensive, so I got a mooncup.

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/06/2021 15:56

I dont have a moon cup but I do use another brand. Was really scared at first but given given sanpro shortage last March I decided to bite the bullet. And I love it. Although there's no supporting scientific evidence for pain reduction, there's one particular pain I used to get that I now no longer do. So although I still get cramps the horrid dragging feeling I also used to get when using tampons has disappeared.

Also love my cloth pads. No more itching scratching or rashes.

Wish I'd known about it years ago

@justfuckoffthelottayer

So how do u not get it everywhere when u take it out I'm willing to be educated how do u not get on hands or spill it? Also e interesting to know ages of those that use it as maybe I am older and stuck in ways? Also never seen one in shops do they sell them. If u changed from years of using other products and had super heavy periods how do u get over the fear of it not working?
I don't think age has anything to do with it.

I'm 56, haven't had a period in 2 years but used one for the last 10 years of menstruation. Only sorry I didn't discover them sooner.

I had unbelievably heavy periods. Using a moon cup, I would get about 2 hours out of it before emptying. Prior to that, I used to use a super plus extra tampon and a towel and had to change at least every hour.

Provided you are relatively careful taking it out, it's reasonably easy to avoid mess. Give it a wipe with a tissue if in a public toilet and then reinsert.

I bought mine in Boots. No idea if they still sell them though.

Best thing ever.

MaMelon · 10/06/2021 15:57

I want to use one, I really do - but when I was practising putting it in I did something wrong and it opened so fast and whacked against my vaginal wall so hard it bought tears to my eyes. I should really pluck up the courage to retry it but pads are so convenient (and not sore!).

SunshineThelma · 10/06/2021 15:57

Below this thread on the Active page, I have an advert for a mooncup-type product...

Brendabigbaps · 10/06/2021 15:58

I’ve used one for about 5 years.
Wear period pants too on my heaviest day just as a back up.
Can’t bear tampons now, they feel uncomfortable and as though I’m going to leak within an hour!

TheOrigRights · 10/06/2021 15:59

I don't know anyone in RL who uses one, but I probably only know what about 10 of my women friends use anyway.

I have recommended them to quite a few, or mention that I use one (has come up at sports things and I say it helps with pelvic floor issues, and also when racing it's more convenient in portaloos.

I know a few who use washable pads.

I have told only my sister about my period pants as I thought it might be something she could suggest to her 3 teenage daughters.

bonfireheart · 10/06/2021 15:59

I bought mine from Asda, next to the sanitary towels.

museumum · 10/06/2021 15:59

It's impossible to describe how clean and nice they feel compared to tampons or traditional towels. I have used tampons for decades without any actual discomfort but with a mooncup everything feels so much healthier and natural as you're not being dried out by the cotton or having a string tucked in.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 10/06/2021 15:59

The people who use them: on heavy days, how do you avoid making a mess while emptying them and washing them out? Don't you bleed everywhere?

PattyPan · 10/06/2021 16:00

I use reusable pads. They’re so much more fun than disposable pads. This way I get to bleed all over a little cloud with a smiley face, a dragon, some flowers etc 🤣

Reallyreallyborednow · 10/06/2021 16:01

Bonus for me is with a mooncup my period seems to be shorter, plus no cramps and less painful.

I did find it took a good 6 months to get the hang of it, but once figured out i’d never go back.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 10/06/2021 16:01

Used one for 20 years. Bliss!

TheBobJog · 10/06/2021 16:01

I'm mid forties and before I had an ablation some 8 years ago now, the mooncup was the ONLY product that gave me half a chance of being able to function normally when I had my stupidly heavy periods. Tampons and pads just weren't up to job.

nina3638 · 10/06/2021 16:02

just have to be careful when taking it out and make sure it’s all tipped down the loo before rinsing it out. they’re not as difficult as you’d imagine, i was convinced they’d be overflowing etc but as long as you check them every few hours they’re fine. i also put a pad on just in case but honestly have never overflowed and mine is very heavy
CassandraTrotter · 10/06/2021 16:03

I use a mixture of moon cup, reusable panty liners or period pants, depending on the day.

Soubriquet · 10/06/2021 16:03

I don’t use one purely because I never got on with tampons but I would if I could get used to it

Instead I use resuable towels

Shelovesamystery · 10/06/2021 16:04

Ugh I really want to use one but I tried and I just couldn't get on with it. Could never get it to stay put. It just kept sliding down to the point that I could feel it, it was uncomfortable and plus it then leaked. And the fourth month I used it it gave me thrush, never had thrush before in my life Confused

Someone tell me where I was going wrong please.

LittleTiger007 · 10/06/2021 16:05

I use one and have exceptionally heavy periods. This is why I use them. I used to use two super plus tampons side by side and would flood in half an hr at my worst. Sorry tmi… but you say this is why you don’t use one. So the moon cup never ever leaks. It fills up, I empty it. Fortunately at work the sink is in the cubicle - obviously you can’t use these so easily otherwise as yes it can be messy on your hands. This is totally surmountable though with tissue paper at a pinch.
Moon cups make me feel more secure. They are cheaper and far better for your own health (chemicals in tampons and the risk of toxic shock syndrome) I just wish I’d discovered them years ago.

SingToTheSky · 10/06/2021 16:05

Absolutely love mine (organicup) - took a couple of cycles to get used to it but it was so, so worth it. My periods are very heavy and I would feel awful each month, flooding when standing up etc.

Now I don’t even feel like I’m on my period most of the time. I can forget for hours at a time. And TBH I feel much cleaner using it.

CheerfulBunny · 10/06/2021 16:07

I must be weird then because I've used one for almost 20 years. I love it and it completely works for me, I'd never go back to using anything else. Tampons don't allow for very light flow and pads/ pants feel like a wet nappy to me. I'm very happy with it. It's great environmentally speaking too.
