I got bitten tonight, and it's got streaks on my arm now: it's a bit sore but not too bad. Weird! Do I need a drs appointment in the morning

OP posts:

I'm glad you went to hospital, spider bites can be really nasty. I got done over by a false widow a few years back, had to have antibiotics and felt like death for about a week.

OrchidLass · 07/06/2021 17:22

Likewise @Blondiney, I'm glad I saw this thread.

Benjispruce3 · 07/06/2021 17:31

Wow good to know. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Wow, so glad you went in and got seen, OP. Hope you're feeling better soon.

For those who are interested, the lymphatic system is a network of tubes, tissues and organs that runs throughout your body. It is part of your immune system, which helps protect you from infection.

The picture shows the lymphatic vessels in green, draining towards the lymph nodes (green dots). These are the "glands" that can become swollen due to a variety of causes.

From lymphoma-action.org.uk/about-lymphoma-what-lymphoma/lymphatic-system
Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer involving the lymphatic system

They're not really green, it's just for illustrative purposes!

5zeds · 07/06/2021 17:40

Poor @sherlockhomeless that sounds awfulSad. I’m so glad you went. You clever thing for following through and getting seen.

Rejoiningperson · 07/06/2021 17:42

That’s so interesting @BoreOfWhabylon I didn’t realise that there were glands in our knees!

Get well soon OP. I’ve learnt something new today... tracking = A&E!

Mamanyt · 07/06/2021 17:42

Red streaks are never a good thing. Have this seen to, and the sooner the better.

They're at the back of the knee, in the soft bit.
tommyhoundmum · 07/06/2021 17:44

That is one evil little midge.

Yugi · 07/06/2021 17:49

I had something similar. Had to have iv antibiotics and stay in for two nights. Wasn’t fun.

randomkey123 · 07/06/2021 17:56

Gosh I hope you feel better soon, OP. And well done for getting seen so quickly, that could have turned nasty very quickly without medication.

chaosmaker · 07/06/2021 18:01

Glad you chased it up. Had a friend that had a spider bite in the states and had a severe reaction to it. Tracking up her arm. Had to go to hospital where they said she'd got there in time to avoid it being fatal. A couple of hours after she'd been bitten!

SlightlyJaded · 07/06/2021 18:02

I came on to suggest False Widow.

So glad you went to A&E and didn't do the usual MN 10 page/3 day procrastination!

Hope the antibiotics are kicking in.

SunnyMustard · 07/06/2021 18:03

Did anyone see the other thread where someone linked to a recent article about poisonous caterpillars !!!??

toffeebutterpopcorn · 07/06/2021 18:05

@sherlockhomeless

Still here, really glad I came tbh, they think it's a spider bite. About an hour after I got to A&E my entire arm swelled up and now has loads of blisters on it.
Bloody hell - was it radioactive??
MintyMabel · 07/06/2021 18:30

Do you mean you may have to stay in the hospital for a few days? How worrying.

It’s not real worrying, it is just that IV antibiotics are much quicker at dealing with that kind of infection and they need to do a full course. My husband has had a couple of cellulitis infections which have needed the same treatment.

theDudesmummy · 07/06/2021 18:38

My DH was bitten on the leg by a false widow (in London) a few years ago (on Christmas Eve no less). He didn't end up as an inpatient but was quite ill. He had to go to A&E every day for a few days and he has been left with quite a scar on his shin (he tells people it was a crocodile!).

MrsWarleggan · 07/06/2021 19:05

I had this last year on the back of my thigh... Warning.... Pictures!! The 1st one shows the bite and the 2nd one shows the swelling which moved round the front top of my thigh. For decency I've cropped! It was awful and so painful. Was given oral antibiotics and diagnosed with Skeeters Syndrome. Still don't know what bit me, but it was an evil bastard!!

StripeyNightmare · 07/06/2021 19:06

God, here go people making up stuff about spiders 🙄

Spiders in the U.K., even false widows, are unlikely to cause you issues. People end up with problems because the bite gets infected, NOT because of the bite itself. Most of the time it isn’t even a spider bite but another insect and spiders get blamed because people don’t understand bites. A spider will not have caused your infection, poor care of a bite is what causes the problem and I highly doubt you were bitten by a spider anyway. A lot of people, including medical professionals, point the finger of blame at spiders because the media have conditioned them to think this way.

Take it from an entomologist, spiders in the U.K. are not a problem. This will not have been caused by a spider bite.

IGetOver · 07/06/2021 19:10

My friends son has just had the exact same looking bite, tracked all the way up his arm. Hospital said likely a spider bite

ZooKeeper19 · 07/06/2021 19:11

Showing this to my DH now who takes a piss of me for being bloody petrified of spiders because they bite. They do effing bite. I got bitten into my leg once, and it was horribly painful and sore for weeks and visible for 6 months. Hope you get well soon!

bigbeatmanifesto · 07/06/2021 19:13

This is exactly what my spider bite looked like. I had what started out as a small bite on my index finger within hours my whole hand was like a blown up rubber glove, the pain & itching was unbearable, glad you've taken the right steps and received treatment hope your not in too much discomfort.

StripeyNightmare · 07/06/2021 19:17

There are only three species capable of biting you. They are not dangerous, it will cause a bit of swelling and soreness. The issues come from scratching the bite and infected the wound with bacteria, not the bite itself.

Spiders are not dangerous. If you clean and insect bite and cover it, these issues won’t occur.
