Does my cousin have a difficult voice to understand?

By voice I mean accent. He's given me permission to post a short soundclip of his voice. He's moved abroad and learned English quite later on in life.

Clip doesn't work

zenithfreedom · 01/06/2021 11:30

My apologies, the link in the OP doesn't work. Here is the one that works.

His accent is perfectly understandable. I hear an American accent with a slight twang of an Irish one. I'm irish and have no issues understanding him at all.

awishes · 01/06/2021 11:34

I can detect Irish and American as he states.
Perfectly understandable accents. In fact quite warm in tone.
I would imagine in his 30s
Hope that helps

Seeline · 01/06/2021 11:35

Perfectly understandable. I hear Scandinavian with an American twang.

HE asks how old do we think he is and what race. His voice sounds quite young - 30s? Race - I haven't a clue Grin

Seeline · 01/06/2021 11:36

Actually - more Dutch than Scandinavian maybe.

reprehensibleme · 01/06/2021 11:36

Perfectly understandable, pleasantly modulated. US accent but with undercurrents of something else that I can't put my finger on,

DancesWithDaffodils · 01/06/2021 11:37

I'd say 95% is really clear, but I couldnt pick out the name he gave, and had to think quite hard about where he lived now.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 01/06/2021 11:37

From hearing that, I would guess a European who had moved to America and picked up the accent. I can hear the Irish twang too.
I would guess he was 30.

MaybeCrazy2 · 01/06/2021 11:37

Seems to be meshing a few accents together but perfectly understandable.

Race? Don’t know, but wouldn’t care.
Age, probably late 20’s to mid thirties

BigMamaFratelli · 01/06/2021 11:37

Sounds American with a bit of Irish. Also a touch of something else- Dutch maybe?
But not hard to understand.
I'd say he's in his 30s

reprehensibleme · 01/06/2021 11:38

Sorry, sounds 30's - no idea about race from voice. Is being born in East Africa a clue?

LookItsMeAgain · 01/06/2021 11:39

He said he's from Africa so I'm guessing he was born there so perhaps African American.
I think he sounds like he is in his mid 30's
He is understandable but he does have what I would describe as an affected American accent. Think Graham McDowell, the golfer from Northern Ireland. He doesn't have a Northern Irish accent anymore and he appears to have picked up some version of an American twang to his voice but it's actually from nowhere in particular.

Does that help?

SpringSparrow · 01/06/2021 11:41

I can understand him but couldn’t catch his name. He sounds more Irish as the clip progresses, particularly from the word “right”. Also can detect American accent. No idea on race or age.

SenseOfDuty · 01/06/2021 11:41

No idea on race, i can hear American with an Irish twang and something else. A nice voice to listen to.

user1495884211 · 01/06/2021 11:44

I found him generally understandable but I struggled with the words in his name and had to listen a couple of times. VanillaMartin1999? I'm not sure how much that is down to his accent and how much our brains work to make sense of what we hear and with it being a random couple of words, it is harder to make sense of.

TheSquarishCircle · 01/06/2021 11:45

South Africa ? Afrikaan ?

ApolloandDaphne · 01/06/2021 11:46

He has a lovely voice. I hear Irish and American with maybe a touch of another European language? He is very easy to understand.

freeez · 01/06/2021 11:48

Perfectly understandable. It sounds like English isn't his first language, but very American with a definite Irish twang.
As he only moved to Ireland 12 years ago, I would say he was probably quite young then to have picked up the accent so much. His username also has 99 in it so I will guess he is 22!
Race - no idea.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/06/2021 11:51

Agree very easy to understand except the name bit where he sort of mumbled.

Hear American with a bit of an Irish accent on some of the words. Quite a slow deliberate pronunciation-felt like maybe he still thinks about speaking English versus it being natural as it would if it was a first language.

Not sure how you can hear race but he said he was from Africa so African?

Think age wise he sounds like he is in his 30's

Bluntness100 · 01/06/2021 11:53

It sounds like he’s trying to enunciate properly in that clip. I wonder if he’s harder to understand when talking normally and quickly. I couldn’t make out his name

I’d say he was late twenties to late thirties. Race no idea, but he seems to have a few accents in there. But again, I wonder if he was speaking more deliberately than he would if speaking quickly in conversation.

Bric · 01/06/2021 11:54

I have a friend who moved from Ireland to New York via Canada when he was a teenager, now in England. His accent is divine

Scoobygang7 · 01/06/2021 11:55

I'd say South African as a bit of a hint of accent mixed with American, and Irish accent and age I'd guess about 36.

DeclineandFall · 01/06/2021 11:56

American with a touch of Irish. Anywhere 20-45. Race I haven't a clue from the voice.

Tinselandlights · 01/06/2021 11:57

I have a degree in linguistics and that is quite hard to understand to me.

Part of it is because he doesn't enunciate the ends of his words very clearly and because his is not a familiar accent, the ear can't 'fill in' what he was saying. I haven't a clue what he said his name was.

To me he sounds as though he hasn't gone to an international school for all his schooling because his vowels are quite idiosyncratic.
