Does my cousin have a difficult voice to understand?

By voice I mean accent. He's given me permission to post a short soundclip of his voice. He's moved abroad and learned English quite later on in life.

I'm an American, and I can kind of hear American, but my first thought was South African. The way he says "Ireland" sounded Irish to me. I would say he's mid-30s and white.

oakleaffy · 01/06/2021 14:30

Easy to understand apart from name
Sounds Irish and also a trace of Dutch to my ear
I’d say 30’s

thepuredrop · 01/06/2021 14:30

Can’t tell his race or his age from his voice. I definitely hear American and Irish accents (maybe Dublin?) He is generally easy to understand except where he mumbled his name, sounds like he said Enola Martin 99, so I’d guess 99 is his year of birth making him 22.

LadyPoison · 01/06/2021 14:36

Sounded like someone who had learned American English. Definite US over tones + a touch of something else so I wouldn't think he was US born. Completely understandable other than I couldn't catch his name either!

As for age and race - no idea.

butterpuffed · 01/06/2021 14:38

Found it easy enough to understand. Not sure why PPs are guessing where he comes from, OP didn't ask that.

mmgirish · 01/06/2021 14:40

He sounds like a white Canadian with Irish parents.

PigletJohn · 01/06/2021 14:42

His "R" sounds are unusual. Maybe Canadian. His vowels are non-standard for English. Not as much as Geordie or NZ but zoom a bit.

I would need to acclimatise to his voice before I could easily follow it.

I'd guess age 30's

don't know origins as I don't know what he started with and what has been added on.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/06/2021 14:42

@zenithfreedom

Are you coming back to tell us????

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/06/2021 14:42

I could understand him but I'm Irish. He does seem to have adopted quite a soft, slurred version of both American and Irish accents. When I moved from Ireland to London I found that people understood me more easily if I hardened up some of my consonants, particularly my 't'.

He asks in the clip "what race do you think I am?"

He asks us in the voice clip what race he is and how old he is!

South African with American and Irish.

Happylittlethoughts · 01/06/2021 14:48

American with a lisp type thing if Irish. He sounds as though he's in his 30s.

MrsMop1964 · 01/06/2021 14:50

I thought Dutch with a hint of Irish. I work with a Dutch person so don't have any problems understanding it.

Missteebeee · 01/06/2021 14:53

It’s very clear

It’s very Irish too which I love

I’d say he’s in his late 20s

Inastatus · 01/06/2021 14:54

I don’t find him difficult to understand at all. I can hear Irish/American and would put him in his 30’s. I’m not sure about his race.

WeAllHaveWings · 01/06/2021 14:54

Overall sounds like an American accent, with a few of out of place twangs such as "Ireland" which sound unnatural, but no problems understanding anything he said (and I am a partially deaf, severe tinnitus sufferer).

SavannahLands · 01/06/2021 14:56

South African with an American Accent

SavannahLands · 01/06/2021 14:57

Age 40- 45 years old

Ritascornershop · 01/06/2021 14:57

Sounds like tri-state area American with an Irish influence. I think he’s likely in his 30’s. His accent is totally understandable, very nice voice.

Aloethere · 01/06/2021 14:57

I thought he was pretty easy to understand, except for the name part. The accent to me is american, D4 Irish accent and something else which I would probably guess as south african.

AlyssasBackRolls · 01/06/2021 15:02

I agree there's a splash of South African in there - it always sounds a little Dutch! Plus american and irish of course. I think it's a lovely accent, very unique! In terms of race I'd say Caucasian/South African (if that's a race?)

AmyDudley · 01/06/2021 15:03

Perfectly easy to understand - I can hear the irish and the American in his voice - and something else less tangible - he has one of those unusual but interesting mixed accents of someone who has lived in different places.
There is a BBC correspondent with a similar sort of mix - but I can't remember her name !
As for age - 30's ?
Race ? - absolutely no idea.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 15:09

Nope - perfectly understandable.

(Mind - I'm from the North East, and our accent is pretty much inpenetrable, so maybe I'm just used to hard-to-decipher speech Grin)
