By voice I mean accent. He's given me permission to post a short soundclip of his voice. He's moved abroad and learned English quite later on in life.

Is it definitely a real person speaking? It didn't sound very natural to me. Easy enough to understand but just not quite like the way an actual person would talk. Maybe it's just because it's for a recording that it sounds a little off.

The Irish accent comes on like a switch being thrown when he says "I moved to Ireland

I worked with a German lady who had moved around a lot. Her English would flip like that. She was speaking about an apartment, and I correctly guessed that her placement in Dublin was the first time she’d had to rent in an English speaking environment (rather than be supplied with university accommodation). Whenever she spoke about rent, rental contracts, or anything connected to the process of renting, she had the broadest Irish accent, that wasn’t there otherwise.

steakandcheeseplease · 01/06/2021 13:51

Id say American and some kind of European accent like Dutch ..

ravenmum · 01/06/2021 13:52

If I said my name in an English sentence, you still wouldn't know what it was, as it's German and also has multiple possible spellings. That doesn't mean my Essex accent is hard to understand, though. :)

womaninatightspot · 01/06/2021 13:53

Understandable for the most part but maybe speaks faster when not being recorded. I thought I picked up a bit of south african (emphasis on certain vowels) but may have been influenced by him saying he was from Africa amongst the American and Irish.

Age wise late 30s early 40s. Race, no idea, I'd guess white as I have met an awful lot of people whose parents left SA when Apartheid was ended.

QueenPaw · 01/06/2021 13:53

I understood everything except the name (I speak to a lot of people daily with various accents and I also speak fluent "drunk, stood under a speaker and ringing 999" Grin

I've been told by people I have a southern accent, and then other people say northern Confused

RevolutionRadio · 01/06/2021 13:53

@JaneJeffer

I imagine he was trying to talk clearly for the purpose of the clip I know a LOD watcher when I see one.
What's LOD?
Summerfun54321 · 01/06/2021 13:53

Afrikaan, American (Boston maybe), Northern Irish, late 30s-early 40s.

Basecamporbust · 01/06/2021 13:53

I found it really hard to make out quite a bit of what he was saying. His voice is unclear to me but that is more diction than accent. I can hear a bit of an American accent but can’t place it. No idea about age or race.

merryhouse · 01/06/2021 13:53

Understood everything except the first word of his pseudonym.

I'd have said "somewhere in America" except for the couple of lines talking about Ireland, where he completely changed the way he spoke to sound Irish (or possibly cod-Oirish, I'm not that well-attuned).

Pleasant timbre, which now I come to think of it sounded a bit like a lovely young black bass called John-Colin I met some years ago (though his accent was entirely British). If pushed I'd say late twenties, and racial origins in the northern half of Africa though that could be completely wrong.

QueenPaw · 01/06/2021 13:54

Second listen I got something Martin, 1989

LadyofMisrule · 01/06/2021 13:55

Mainly American, some Irish. Possibly a trace of Dutch.

I'd say early 30s. It's a nice voice.

cookiecreampie · 01/06/2021 13:55

It's a bit weird in parts but not in a bad way and mostly understandable. I'd say early 30s and white.

blahblahblah321 · 01/06/2021 14:01

@zenithfreedom , are you going to come back and tell us about him?

Amortentia · 01/06/2021 14:02

Very easy to understand. Initially, I thought he sounded like someone from the western isles of Scotland. That accent has a bit of a slow drawl like an American accent. He sounds like an American that been living in Cork to me. 🤣

Seeingadistance · 01/06/2021 14:10

Can hear American and Irish accents. Pleasant voice. Name difficult to pick up, he didn't speak so clearly at that point.

Age and race - have no idea.

diddl · 01/06/2021 14:12

I couldn't easily catch everything that was being said.

I think in places yes, quite difficult to understand.

To be it was if they weree trying too hard to speak clearly.

Clydesider · 01/06/2021 14:12

I thought I heard a touch of Afrikaan in his voice. There was an Irish twang in there as well, but only mildly and not on every word. I'd say his age was around 35 to 40.

woofgoesthecat · 01/06/2021 14:13

American with a touch of Irish. Around 30-35.

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/06/2021 14:17

Purposely didn't read the full thread...

Definite hints of irish and american with an african undertone just creeping in.

Sounds nice, anywhere from 25 - 39, no idea on race at all though.

Easy to understand but I didn't catch the username he gave himself, possibly because its not a proper name?

Foxglovesandlilacs · 01/06/2021 14:17

@Scoobygang7

I'd say South African as a bit of a hint of accent mixed with American, and Irish accent and age I'd guess about 36.
This!
Myshitisreal · 01/06/2021 14:20

I said my instinct thought he was quite based on nothing, but I've been thinking about it ever since I've posted it and it's feels inappropriate to say that.
I only said it due to the way the that read written but it's made me feel grotty and awful so I'd like to retract that and apologise

WestwardEast · 01/06/2021 14:21

Accent sounds American with some Irish and Dutch.

Age: about mid 30's to mid 40's.
Race?

PuffItsGone · 01/06/2021 14:27

Confused by OP saying he learnt English later in life when he says he moved to the US at age 8?

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 01/06/2021 14:28

He's really to understand. I think he sounds American when he's talking about the states, and he sounds Irish when he's talking about Ireland (I'd guess Northern Ireland). I can't hear any East African. I'd say he's white and 30-40 years old.
