After watching a documentary about dangerous wild animal licenses in the uk I came across this www.bornfree.org.uk/dwamap thought others might be interested it shows in every council in the uk what wild animas are living in peoples homes that have licenses Cornwall from my browsing seems to have rediculous amounts of big cats I’m guessing from private zoos thought others unable to sleep might be interested. None in my area, so I can sleep easy.

Is it wrong I'm disappointed we have nothing registered in our fairly sizeable city? I'm suspecting that might be because they're under the radar however, which would say to me that they're not terribly responsible owners. Or maybe there genuinely is nothing!

takingmytimeonmyride · 26/05/2021 13:58

My local council isn't even on the list.

But the next nearest one has 7 ostriches and 2 ruffed lemurs. Not very dangerous thankfully.

I dunno...I wouldn't get in an enclosure with an ostrich.
MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 26/05/2021 14:22

@Hoppinggreen

Apparently there are 5 Bengal cats near me There are 2 next door and I didn’t think a licence was required as Bengals are cats
They must be F1 Bengals on the council list - first generation cross-breeds. I've posted about them upthread. Unlikely to be your neighbour's?
MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 26/05/2021 14:24

Why are you so completely against PETA, @CuriousaboutSamphire ?

An ostrich is capable of killing a lion - or an annoying human - with a kick and can run at speeds of 45mph.

Nothing here in reading Sad

There seems to be a couple of herds of bison in my county and someone has a capuchin monkey, which I'm so jealous of!!

AfternoonToffee · 26/05/2021 14:38

I'm not sure about petitions regarding this. The bison are generally farms and I guess the same for the ostrich. Realistically what's the difference between them and cows or chickens?

AfternoonToffee · 26/05/2021 14:39

Aside from the fact an ostrich can run very fast.

Stompythedinosaur · 26/05/2021 14:40

This is really interesting. We only have a serval.

Wear is someone keeping 40 bison in County Durham? I assume it is one person, rather than 40 people with a bison each.

Forgot to add about the lemurs - once mature they can seek to establish dominance and can chase, scratch and give a very nasty bite indeed. They are also very stinky, although you don't need a licence for that! Most importantly, nearly every species of lemur is endangered, with 95% in danger of extinction.

My post was primarily about big cats and I would also include primates.
LER83 · 26/05/2021 14:48

In my county we seem to have lots of snakes, especially rattlesnakes, a capuchin monkey, and a boar! My dream is to have a serval!

ChiefBabySniffer · 26/05/2021 15:20

I'm afraid that isn't accurate at all. I know of two people in my town that have a DWA license for venomous snakes and another for a gharial but it says none. Also, the person I got a very niche animal from had an actual snow leopard well as painted dogs and various large cats and none of those species are listed in their Borough.

UnbeatenMum · 26/05/2021 15:39

200 boar in the New Forest seems like a suspiciously round number to me.

takingmytimeonmyride · 26/05/2021 15:57

Ok, I'm worried about the ostriches and lemurs now. I wonder who has 7? Or if 7 individuals have them. Hopefully they're not kept on fields with footpaths running through them. Cows are scary enough when out walking!

PickAChew · 26/05/2021 16:13

40 bison and a bengal cat.

I'm guessing the bison are a private herd but I'm surprised a Bengal is on that list.

PickAChew · 26/05/2021 16:14

Ah, it's a farm

LondonStone · 26/05/2021 16:23

Only one for me but it’s a spectacled caiman which.... wow. I can’t help but wonder where it lives! Grin

Planty13 · 26/05/2021 16:31

40 bison near me and 1 Bengal cat. The bison are on a farm and they are a breeding herd.

Planty13 · 26/05/2021 16:32

Ooo @PickAChew you just be near me!

BearSoFair · 26/05/2021 16:36

None in our borough but my sister's borough has 2 camels apparently!

BearSoFair · 26/05/2021 16:40

Ahh just seen people mention the enfield camels upthread, didn't think about family owned zoos.
