We had those dining chairs when I was a kid in the 70s ❤️

MFI I would guess!

Look at the condition of the kitchen units! They are immaculate. We put in an IKEA kitchen 3 years ago and the cupboard fronts are splitting and bubbled with water dripping on them (and we are very careful).

mellicauli · 21/05/2021 23:33

Aw..that house is like one big nanna hug. I love it.

NerrSnerr · 21/05/2021 23:34

@Spinningaround18

What a horrible thread 💔
Have you read the post. The vast majority of the thread is from people saying how lovely the house is and how it reminds them of childhood. Most of the rest of the posts are about how awful the thread is.
NerrSnerr · 21/05/2021 23:35

@TiltTopTable that's one post out of 179, I would say the vast majority of posts are about how nice the house is.

TiltTopTable · 21/05/2021 23:38

My point was the poster said they hadn't read a single negative comment. I was just pointing out that there had been at least one. I think these threads are horrible.

AndeanMountainCat · 21/05/2021 23:38

What a gorgeous bungalow (I have a thing for bungalows of that era), so lovingly and beautifully kept. I hope it brought many years of happiness and security for the family who lived there. It’s on a nice piece of land too.

I’d love to live somewhere like that. So much space!

It reminds me of a mash-up of various friends’ houses when we were kids. Very welcoming.

Unfortunately the house I grew up in was slightly newer and very cheaply/poorly made, with a steep impractical garden, so I’m nostalgic for something I never really had myself.

TiltTopTable · 21/05/2021 23:43

It’s a right move thread. There are loads of them on mn. We find weird and odd ball houses and discuss grin (usually rip to shreds people’s decorating choices!!) how lovely to rip to shreds the home of somebody who probably loved their home.

ACPC · 21/05/2021 23:46

Read the op. It clearly isn't to be nastyConfused I love the kitchen l. People really took pride in their homes then. We've such a throw away culture nowSad

MacDonaldsFarm · 21/05/2021 23:46

What a gem of a 70's house and immaculate too.

Bizarre how some people can find something negative to say about this thread, some PPs seem to have completely missed the point!

RachelsHoliday21 · 21/05/2021 23:49

Looks like my grandparents house, love it.

NerrSnerr · 22/05/2021 00:04

@TiltTopTable but no one has ripped it to shreds- not even the poster you quoted who talked about these threads ripping right move houses to shreds. The overwhelming majority of posts on the thread are positive.

Doggitydog · 22/05/2021 00:09

This is a bizarre thread, not because of you though op. Must be a full moon due Wink

SappysCurry · 22/05/2021 00:13

Looks sad to me too, like an elderly persons forever home and they kept it nicely and and raised their children there.it holds a lot of memories 😓

MajorNeville · 22/05/2021 00:20

I could curl up in that sofa and have my gran bring me a bowl of minestrone soup with cheese grated in it and then just watch tv and chat to her and my granddad, gulp. I love it!

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 22/05/2021 00:57

Aw, it’s like stepping into my grandparents house, they hadn’t modernised it much before it was sold a few years ago.

My mum and step dad bought those type chairs and a similar display cabinet in the mid/late 80’s. I remember them being delivered as we moved in with my step dad and they bought new furniture from a pay weekly furniture shop, the chairs were scratchy, the table folded out and the cabinet smelt like MDF.

I also remember the flower stickers on the bathroom tiles, the white wardrobes were also popular in that era. The kitchen cupboards look like they are the original ones when the house was built, as my grandparents had similar ones which I remember were replaced sometime in the late 80s.

The horse and cart ornament also bought fond memories of my grandma, I was looking out for brass ornaments but only saw candle sticks.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 22/05/2021 07:16

In the past people bought the best they could afford because they wanted things to last. The constant changing of items to keep up with fads would have been regarded as frivolous.
That is certainly what my parents and in laws did. When it was time to change the wallpaper they might modernise a bit, but furniture was bought to last ideally until at least the silver wedding.

Bluntness100 · 22/05/2021 07:41

I don’t think it looks remotely sad. It looks like a well cared for house, someone has taken huge effort to keep everything pristine for about sixty years. So someone loved it. For me that makes it happy.

I don’t personally love anything in it enough that I’d keep it, but think it’s typical of many homes of elderly people, my grandmothers was the same.

Years ago doing your house up never used to be a thing. If something wasn’t done you didn’t replace it, but now with home make over shows, so many retail places dedicated to home wares and changes, it is really the norm.

How many threads do we see on here where people say the bathroom or kitchen is really dated and needs replacing. Not the bathroom and kitchen looks worn out and not fit for purpose, but it looks dated, so needs to be replaced for solely that reason. Seldom do we see someone say god I love a dated kitchen and bathroom. That would be a huge selling point for me.

GappyValley · 22/05/2021 08:03

I got such a proustian rush looking at those picture.

Transported to my grandparents house, and could smell the lovely smell of their house looking at the pictures of the kitchen

user1495884211 · 22/05/2021 09:25

I think it is fascinating that people are seeing the same thing - a house lived in for many years, cared for, full of memories, a place where a family has probably been raised - and some people are getting a feeling of sadness from the end of an era whilst others are feel the warmth and joy of a long life well lived.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 22/05/2021 10:06

Houses like this make me feel quite sad that they lived with such old furniture/carpets. Makes me wonder if they chose to live like that or if they couldn't afford to upgrade.

God you would be apoplectic if you stepped foot in my house. We’ve had it for 3.5 years now and it is maybe 90% the same as we moved in. The stair / upstairs carpet is straight from the 70s but thicker and in better nick than a lot of modern carpets. The kitchen tiles are brown old school jobs. Everything is still serviceable and clean, why replace it just because it’s “old”? Nothing sad about being mindful of the utter waste of ripping out perfectly fine kitchen cabinets because they’re not grey gloss shaker modern things. It’s more sad to me to replace perfectly usable decor just to be trendy, really sad.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 22/05/2021 10:19

Like a PP said, I also think about the poor sellers & estate agents when people share a RightMove link in this way.

Agents use the data to see if the house is correctly prices / attracting interest.

In cases like this, they must be scratching their heads - the house has so many online viewers, what's stopping them from making a appointment / enquiry?

user1495884211 · 22/05/2021 10:34

Estate agents aren't stupid - they must know that if a house suddenly gets an unusual number of hits that it has been shared somewhere. And it isn't just people sharing to gawp at a life-sized model of Terry Wogan in the back bedroom, plenty of people post a link to a house they are thinking of buying and asking for opinions, or sellers link asking for feedback on their listing.

SappysCurry · 22/05/2021 11:35

@ReallyBloodyAnnoying

I think those chairs are G Plan / Schreiber OP

(MFI = ‘Made to Fall Into bits) my dad always called them !

Purplewithred · 22/05/2021 11:43

I think it’s a lovely evocation of my childhood. Brought back good memories and made me feel happy.

altforvarmt · 22/05/2021 11:53

I love this house so much (and I don't see how this thread is nasty). It's just like my grandparents' houses in the 80s. I'd want to keep so much of this house as it is, especially the kitchen. It's a gem.
