One project a day- 2nd thread!

BlueLobelia · 19/05/2021 19:01

Welcome to everyone, old hats, lurkers and newbies.

This is a thread where we try and achieve something, no matter how small, a day.

This was the preamble to the previous thread ;

''......many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :) ''

everyone welcome!

Also haven't looked at this thread for a long time. Just seem to have been so busy.
But I have been trying to do little and often. Even if it's one shelf, then it's better than nothing.

We are in the middle of big works in our house and it just feels so chaotic.

But today I cleared out ds's clothes drawers ready for winter. And while we were there we did a couple of shelves in his room. I'd love to have the energy to rip through his whole room but I'm going to be happy with what I've managed.

I also did a cupboard in the kitchen last week that has been needing done for years! Such a simple thing but it makes life so much easier when we need to get something from it.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 26/09/2021 12:26

I will be cleaning out our Guinea pigs today.

Also planning on getting a skip this week so that I can clear the back garden of wood and our under stairs cupboard. The cupboard is full to the brim and actually has paint tins in there that are 10 yrs old from when I first moved into our house! Once this job is done I will post again as I will really feel like I have achieved!

RosieLeaLovesTea · 26/09/2021 18:22

Hey I am back. Not only did I clean the guinea pigs but I also laid 6 bags of plum slate on one of our raised beds. I started with 12 bags. I laid 6 bags a few months ago. Then I repainted the woodwork around it on the other side about a month ago. I wanted to lay the state before it gets a lot colder. It’s taken me time but one job a day makes all the difference.

Breathmiller · 28/09/2021 09:41

Well done Rosie yes it really works for me this one job at a time too.

I am stuck at home with two covid boys so I am taking the opportunity to cook and use up all the half ingredients in the cupboard.

Peridot1 · 28/09/2021 09:51

Hi all. Got back from a lovely week away yesterday.

So aiming to get back into it all. Today’s task is my unpacking and washing.

Got back to a DS who left to go back to uni on Tuesday, reappeared on Friday for the weekend and is now ill so still here. Had a COVID test yesterday so we may all be isolating for a bit if it’s positive I suppose. Just managed to book a supermarket delivery for Thursday so should be fine.

@Breathmiller - just doing one drawer or shelf definitely makes a difference. I used to plan a whole day to do a big sort out but would hate it and get distracted etc. Doing it this way is much better for me. I may not feel like doing it but I know just half an hour or so will be worth it.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 30/09/2021 13:20

I started the day with a promising to do list.

And absolutely none of it got done.

However…I did manage to increase my automatic pension contributions (is increase the correct word when it was previously a big fat zero?), and I finally washed the spare sheets that have been ignored for the last couple of weeks, and I put away the clean sheets and too hot duvet that had been cluttering up my bedroom.

It is not what I had planned but it is something. Three somethings, if you are counting.

Breathmiller · 30/09/2021 14:45

Three somethings is great. 👍

I have nearly cleared out all my cupboards, fridge and freezer while we are isolating. And now I have emptied the fridge I am giving it a major clean. Feels so good.

Breathmiller · 30/09/2021 16:31

Oh my goodness! I just cleared the outside of my big American style fridge freezer. It has been an art display, a recipe board and an intray for longer than I'd like to remember, but suffice to say it was a potential biohazard.

But all the useless pieces of paper and bills and manky horrible fridge magnets have gone and I have a fridge!! Like a proper clear silver coloured fridge. It makes my kitchen look so less messy. Fridge is sparkly inside too with lots of old condiments thrown out.

It feels so....free. Every time I declutter an area it's like a part of my brain also gets decluttered.

Breathmiller · 01/10/2021 14:09

I am on a roll. If it isn't locked down it's getting thrown out. Just a small section at a time in between housework and knitting.

Today I have cleared the worktop. Tubs of broken pens and crap all gone. And 2 huge boxes of art/craft stuff that the kids don't even look at anymore. These 2 boxes have been cluttering up my laundry room(read cupboard off the living room) for years. All gone.

Next stop is my little wooden spice cupboard.

Peridot1 · 02/10/2021 10:00

Well done BreathMiller. It always feels so good doesn’t it?

I’ve been rubbish this week. Did some washing and changing of beds.
That’s about it really.

DS did test positive for Covid and is feeling rubbish. Coughing away and not sleeping or eating much. I felt dreadful yesterday so wondered if I was starting it but am much better today. I had done a test on Wednesday anyway as was just back from an amber list country and it was negative.

As I didn’t feel up to much this week I started on Christmas planning and shopping. So felt I achieved something even if from the sofa.

Today’s job is washing, changing my bed and making a list of all the jobs that need to be done before Christmas.

Breathmiller · 02/10/2021 10:41

Sorry to hear your son has covid. We're just coming out of it. Smy kids are still isolating til Tuesday though. It's an awful cough. Hopes your DS won't get it too badly.

We have been testing daily and since we have a negative PCR and double vaccinated we are can go out to the shops today.

I have been wondering what I can clear out today. I have my eye on a full to bursting work book shelf.

My kitchen feels so clear and it's great.

Sitting on the sofa doing some organising and planning sounds a good idea for you Peridot

Breathmiller · 02/10/2021 10:42

Goodness, so many typos.

Peridot1 · 05/10/2021 09:26

How is everyone doing?

Christmas planning and shopping has started here. Went to Costco with DH yesterday and made a start.

Bought some Systema food storage boxes which then prompted me to finally do the Tupperware drawer. It’s now nice and tidy. But still quite full and that’s without adding in yesterday’s purchase.

DH and I then tackled some of the cupboards in the utility room and have cleared a shelf in the cupboard there.

Sorted the Medicine cupboard and have a bag of out of date meds to dispose of.

Will concentrate on more utility room sorting this week.

Also need to get the spare bedroom guest ready for Friday.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 08/10/2021 08:16

I have done quite a few little jobs over the last few days that haven’t been significant to make it onto ‘the list’.

I booked an appointment for DH with the accountant (this is a serious bone of contention in our marriage - DH takes the ostrich approach to financial planning and it seriously, seriously pisses me off)
I took the cat to the vet
I went to the human pharmacy for the cat medicine
I rewashed (for the third and final time) clothes that had been ignored in the washing machine and actually hung them up to dry so they don’t need a fourth wash
I cleaned the patio

Peridot1 · 08/10/2021 09:38

Nice to see you DifficultBloodyWoman. Thought I was in my own here! Grin

I haven’t actually done much this week since my last post. Brushed the dog twice and got enough hair to knit a new one pretty much!

Guests who were supposed to come tonight are now not so haven’t had to sort room.

We are having a pathway laid out side the utility room and that should be finished on Monday. We can then sort the patio for winter. Have ended up with plans for a nice area under the kitchen window for herbs - going to put shingle down and plant herbs in some half wine barrels. And on the other side of the pathway there will be a small triangular bed against our neighbours’ hedge so I’m deciding what to plant in there.

Also want to plan and sort bulbs to plant in next couple,of weeks.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 08/10/2021 23:21

Hi Peridot! I’ve been absent because I bought a new iPad and can’t sign into Mumsnet on it because I’ve forgotten my password. I don’t want to change my username or setup a new account because I really like my name. 😂 so until I get this figured out I have to use a cracked screen and try not to cut my fingers.

Anyway, it sounds like you have been busy recently. Your gardening plans sound good. I’m still trying to figure out what to do to my patio. Because of DH’s work, and the possibility of moving at short notice, we are renting so my hands are somewhat tied by a) what I want to do, b) budget constraints, and c) no permanent changes in a rental. Hmmm.

Other than that, today I plan to tackle the humongous pile of laundry in the hallway.

I also want to make a list of various ‘outstanding matters’ that might otherwise slip through the cracks such as chasing up a contested parking ticket and tax return stuff etc. I think it is going to be a long list, unfortunately.

ShinyHatStand · 09/10/2021 00:28

Totally forgot about this thread.
I'm back in. Starting tomorrow.
The house is a shit tip.

Peridot1 · 09/10/2021 09:36

Can you get a password reminder from Mumsnet DifficultBloodyWoman? I don’t blame you not wanting to change your name as it is a bloody good one!

Today’s plan here is to go and have my flu jab and then pop to Tesco and the local farm shop.

This afternoon I will tidy the hallway. Need to swap out my summer shoes and sandals for winter stuff. And continue putting some of my summer clothes away.

Also have hardly used car seat to get rid of. Going to start by asking on village WhatsApp group to see if anyone wants it.

ShinyHatStand · 09/10/2021 10:30

I've mostly cleared all the crap lying around in the hall.
And tidied 2 big drawers of shoes/gloves/etc

Next is the monstrous heap of post and other assorted detritus on the stairs

Chunkymonkey123 · 10/10/2021 08:20

I have done some Christmas shopping. I’ve also cleared out 7 bags of baby clothes and 3 bags of fabric to go to charity/fabric bin. I’m so pleased as it’s been hanging over me for ages and now I can hide the Christmas presents in the spare wardrobe.
I also found all the garden toys and sprayed them and put them in a box for winter.

ShinyHatStand · 10/10/2021 08:50

@Chunkymonkey123 clearing out bags is the best!
I always measure my tidying success by how much stuff leaves the house.
I got loads done yesterday but only managed to throw away one bin bag.

Not decided about today. Might go for weeding the garden while the weather isn't horrible.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 13/10/2021 11:13

Peridot, I’m not sure because I no longer have that email address (temp mail).

I had a thorough clean of the utility room today. It didn’t take as long as anticipated so I am quite pleased about that.

And then I had an afternoon nap. In my defence, I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night and DH was out all day which meant I had blissful peace and quiet. I love that man dearly but oh my god can he make noise!

Iceisnice · 13/10/2021 12:01

Hi been absent for a while, the craziness of a child filled life! and have just my operation yesterday so am hoping to be able to take part again ASAP.
The projects are going to have to be tiny because I can't lift or do housework for 6 weeks....!

Iceisnice · 13/10/2021 20:31

Right project today has been completed: cut out white stocking shapes from material to make ds advent calendar. A good job to do while sitting down, hoping to start sewing them tomorrow night.

Bottl · 15/10/2021 07:23

Hello everyone,
I joined at the start of the previous thread and then dropped off.
The house is completely out of control so I'm jumping back in!
Today's task is to empty, sort and refill the utility area. It's not a room. It's the space between my kitchen and bathroom and is wide enough for a washing machine and 4 shelves. Shouldn't take too long, should it? So why has it taken so long to get it done Hmm
Have to take the car to the garage first so am aiming for a midday deadline unless I can get it done in the next hour.
