One project a day- 2nd thread!

Welcome to everyone, old hats, lurkers and newbies.

This is a thread where we try and achieve something, no matter how small, a day.

This was the preamble to the previous thread ;

''......many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :) ''

everyone welcome!

Not quite house related but I finally took time to sort out my wayward dreadlocks. Just tying a few in. I'm terrible at only getting them done at the hairdressers but I can keep them neat in between for longer if I just get on with it
Dh is currently filling a hole in the wall ready for us to paint the hall. So not me, but it's a little job that has been holding us both ip on the bigger job.

BlueLobelia · 30/07/2021 13:55

I am ready and waiting for guests. Hopefully they do not mind homemade chicken burgers and sweet potato fries for dinner, because that is what we are having.

I have also put together a full ikea bag of old uniform for our second hand uniform shop. I will drop that off sometime next week, and hopefully will get a little bit of money out of it. The deal is that the sellers get 70% of the cost and the rest goes to the school's designated charity which this year is our local wildlife trust.

Hope the guests are behaving themselves!

I bought some new plants to replace some very dead ones in my children’s room. Tomorrow will try to tackle the one remaining wardrobe in their room that has not been sorted.

I also went carpet shopping today as we are considering replacing the bedroom carpet, and if so it needs to be done before the door is replaced in September... So I will need to think about that and make a decision since I now have the quotes. Slowly getting there...!

Sparklynewname · 31/07/2021 22:37

We did a fair amount before we left yesterday morning but it was cleaning and changing beds rather than anything else.
We’re going into London tomorrow so that will be lovely ☺️

DifficultBloodyWoman · 31/07/2021 22:55

I’m posting now to keep myself focussed - by the end of the day, my bedroom and office will be organised and cleaned. That means both the piles of laundry on the floor and the piles of paper on the floor will have been dealt with and have permanent homes whether that is the rubbish bin, the rag bag, the wardrobe, shelf or drawer.

And I have to fit some lesson planning in there too.

BlueLobelia · 01/08/2021 07:41

Morning all,

Guests are behaving! Actually they are spendingn a bit of time visiting other friends so have been out alot.

Today I am digging up all my first crop potatos and then replanting that pot with my Whatever-They-Ares. The Watever-They-Ares are vegetable seedlings that I sowed earlier this year and then forgot what they were. They have lovely strong green leaves though. I think they might be courgettes or cucumbers, but not entirely sure. It's probably way too late for growing them but the truth is I had forgotten all about them!

I am sad though that none of my patty pan squash seedlings took hold. I adore patty pan! My neighbour's are doing well in his little greenhouse though so i swapped him some beef tomato plants on the promise he will give me some squash eventually.

Oh we need to replace our carpet also. What sort of colour are you going for? We will be going very neutral I think (current colour is dark).

I also have a vague plan forming of turning the spare room into the boys sitting room when the guests are gone. We might get rid of the bed and buy a sofa bed. It might be nice for them to have a separate space as they get older (and also will prevent me from using that room as a dumping ground which is how it is right now!).

Fallen off the thread again, but trying to get some bits done following some time away last week and before we go away again next week. I found a list of 31 five (ish) minute jobs I created ages ago with the aim of doing one every day in a month and then starting again the following month and so on, so I'm going to try and make those my mini-projects for August.

Playing a bit of catch up today as I didn't do one yesterday, but 1 and 2 are "descale the kettle" and "de-crumb and wipe down the toaster". I have done the kettle recently, so I descaled the shower head instead (we live in a very hard water area so I am constantly stocking up with Oust and lemon juice Hmm) and the toaster is looking good. I also want to get back into cleaning the bathroom one bit at a time, so I'll also do the sink today Smile

DownUdderer · 03/08/2021 08:08

I've soaked two camping sleeping bags in watered down vinegar, then washed them in the washing machine and hung them up to dry. One had a bit of mildew on it, so I just wanted to freshen them up.

I got my second jab last week and I've been all headachey since then, so today I started feeling a bit better, so I'm pleased to get a pain in the bum job done.

BlueLobelia · 03/08/2021 09:12

glad you are starting to feel better @DownUdderer

31, 5 minute jobs is inspired!

I have an aim to donate a charity shop bag every day this week. Did one yesterday, about to sort one for today. WFH all this week which is nice.

SydneyCarton, would you be willing to post your list? It sounds fab.

I think all of the jobs on my to do list are too big and therefore I am ignoring them.yours might motivate me.

Although, I have an inspection booked for Thursday so I am going to have to do a major clean in the next 46 hours. Nothing like visitors or guests for a bit of motivation!

SydneyCarton · 03/08/2021 14:31

Here's the list - as I said, we live in a hard water area so there's quite an emphasis on descaling things Grin. We're in a flat with a glass French-window-type door onto the balcony which gets covered in grubby kids fingerprints, hence no. 18!

Some things on the list I will do more than once a month, but having them on the list means I do them at least once a month. I try to stick more or less to the same thing on the same day, otherwise I end up unblocking the sinks on the 28th and doing it again on the 5th Hmm

Wow, so much industry on this thread!
Yesterday the walls in DS’s bedroom were finished and the woodwork was prepped. Also the carpet was removed and a tip run was done.
Today the woodwork has been painted.
I have taken the car to the car wash and picked up birthday presents for the nephews. Also bought brush cleaner for the oil based eggshell.
3 loads of washing done, lots put away and have 1 dry, 1 drying and 1 washing still to be folded at some point tonight or tomorrow.
DS has his theory test tomorrow. He is certain he is going to fail it. I hope he doesn’t.
We have family visiting next weekend which is frightening as we have to get the house in order before they come and at the moment we have DS’s bedroom floor in the lounge 😱😂

Sparklynewname · 04/08/2021 22:49

So tonight we have painted the windowsill, bought the curtains and started laying the floor. We have just over 1/3 of the floor down.
I am taking DD to London tomorrow straight after work and staying overnight for a scam. Then back on Friday evening. Will be very happy to have a lie in on Sunday if I get one!

BlueLobelia · 05/08/2021 07:48

another charity shop bag sorted today.

I’ve got to stop answering my phone in the evenings! My manager has offered me overtime again (I work 3 days a week and overtime takes me up to full time/5 days a week) and I said yes. Which is great for my bank account but not so much for this thread. I haven’t had any spare time and my house is a mess. I’m also really tired. And wondering how the hell I managed to get stuff done when I had a full time job.

BlueLobelia · 06/08/2021 21:42

I like the idea of not answering phones in the evenings - for so many reasons!

I did another charity shop bag. I am aiming to donate one every day for the rest of August. :)

We went to IKEA yesterday and it took hours! Left home at 11:20 and got back at 16:30. DS and I assembled the storage headboard for his bed all the way til we got to the part where we realised it had to be attached to the wall. Thought DH was going to have a fit as it’s a solid stone wall and he hates drilling into it!
Today we assembled his bed and the drawers and the chair and stool. He is just connecting in his Sonos speaker and getting all the wiring connected for that. Then I need to help him move the bed back in.
Then we might finally be able to get the bedding in and on and finish dressing the room so I can get his washing put away.
We’re supposed to have family visiting next week at some point and I am dreading it as we are nowhere near visitor ready!

mamakoukla · 08/08/2021 21:37

I’ve been lurking on the thread a bit but today was encouraged along by it and have finally tidied the guest bedroom and utility room up again and spring cleaned them. I also collected together items for donation and will organize according to where they will go. I got caught up with appointment related emails, and had two nice chin wags on the phone as well. Dinner is semi prepped, ironing is done. I keep walking into the utility room and admiring the cupboards Blush

I need to tidy up the clutter on the desk but as I am doing that I am laying out chores that need to be done eg trousers to be hemmed, paper bag with receipts for shredding etc. The plan is to literally pick up and go with it.

BlueLobelia · 09/08/2021 09:28

Morning! Back at work this week (In the office, not WFH) so I am hoping to just dedicate 10 minuites tidying to a cluttered area each night.

Today- the hallway.

OP posts:
mamakoukla · 10/08/2021 19:11

Today I unpackaged a storage cupboard which had been getting a bit messy, went through everything, got rid of very little (happy about that as it means we haven’t been stuffing it with clutter), and have put everything back where it belongs. Also did the cold room.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 11/08/2021 11:15

I had a major clean up on Sunday and Monday which means lots of little things got dealt with.

At the moment, my outstanding project list includes recovering a chair (it has been on the list for a long time), a terrifyingly large pile of laundry, and taking the donation boxes to the charity shop (that is going to happen on Thursday or Friday).

I’m feeling pretty good about most things but will really feel like it is under control when I get that chair started.

Peridot1 · 12/08/2021 09:45

Hi all.

We still have visitors so this is the first chance I have had to catch up on the thread for two weeks.

We did manage to get organised for them and house was looking pretty good. Except my walk in wardrobe as I dumped a lot of random stuff in there.

House is now a mess again but superficially really. Four extra people one of which is four leads to mess. Plus the late nights and too much wine don’t help!

They have gone off out for the day so I’m having a quiet day and will try to catch up on laundry and do a bit of a general clean and tidy up. Some new side tables arrived yesterday so will unpack them today too.

BIL put up some lights in my bedroom that were waiting to go up since January. Also have a mirror that I’m hoping he will get to do.

Once they have gone plan is to get house back to how it was the day they arrived and then work on the remaining areas which is mainly my bedroom and wardrobe and the living room. Living room is a bit of a nightmare and will involve redecorating and some construction work possibly.

I like your tasks list @SydneyCarton. I need to create a similar one.
