One project a day- 2nd thread!

BlueLobelia · 19/05/2021 19:01

Welcome to everyone, old hats, lurkers and newbies.

This is a thread where we try and achieve something, no matter how small, a day.

This was the preamble to the previous thread ;

''......many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :) ''

everyone welcome!

@Raaraaboonah I hear this! Especially this week as childcare arrangements have gone tits up so am looking after the kids and trying to work at the same time. Fortunately the youngest is in nursery for three days and work is not too busy as lots of people are still on hols, but I have not been able to do half the stuff I wanted with them around. Roll on autumn term and a bit of mundane routine!

I don't know about anyone else, but my "projects" are also mundane life admin sort of things, which end up being put off endlessly instead of tackled and ticked off. Most times when I have put my head down and got on and done something like clearing and tidying my bedside table, or putting away the clean laundry, or chucking out OOD food etc I've been pleasantly surprised at how quick it was and how much of a difference it made Smile

Peridot1 · 28/08/2021 09:35

It is so much harder when you are out of normal routine - completely agree.

And a lot of my ‘projects’ are now mundane day to day stuff but I do find that having this thread means I am actually doing them! And sometimes adding in a bit more. Otherwise I used to put things off as it seemed a huge task but doing something every day towards something bigger makes it easier to do. At least for me.

I’m currently in Dublin at my Dad’s house. He died in July. There is loads to be done here but I’m finding it hard to get motivated. Have cleared a load of glass jars from a cupboard and cleared out a cupboard in the bathroom. Will just plod on doing bits and pieces.

Sparklynewname · 02/09/2021 23:10

@Peridot1, take it steady. Hope you’re well xx

Peridot1 · 03/09/2021 10:08

Thanks @Sparklynewname. I’m doing ok. Got some stuff done and flew back home yesterday. Full of a cold so feeling a bit bleurgh. How are you doing?

Today I will unpack and do some washing. And that’s about it!

Chunkymonkey123 · 03/09/2021 18:23

Today I was at work but on my break I made a doctors appointment, dentist appointment for the children and cancelled a subscription I wasn’t using. Feel really tired now so that might need to be it for today 😂
This weekend I need to sort and label school clothes, do several loads of washing (not really a project), and continue levelling the garden ready for grass seeding.

Sparklynewname · 05/09/2021 23:17

I’ve had a busy day!
Managed to get DD a wardrobe from Facebook so had to do a lot of furniture shifting for it. Still need to go and get the other part of it from IKEA this week but have worked my socks off getting things sorted in her room (while she lay on the bed reading a book/ watching a program/ knitting fog).
Yesterday and today have seen tip runs (not large but more stuff gone).
I have listed and sold a bedside table and a lamp- pending collection and have another chest of drawers to list tomorrow evening.
DS had a phone consultation with dermatology today as he has a suspicious mole. He will be having it removed in the next month- but will need to self isolate for 3 days just prior to his surgery. And he starts college tomorrow.
Life is becoming a little more normal and DS is so much brighter.

CharityDingle · 06/09/2021 11:00

Did loads of washing during a recent good spell of weather. Some of it is still sitting on a clothes airer.

Will fold and tidy away the lot of it today, everything in a proper place.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 06/09/2021 12:35

I’ve finished washing all the old sheets and towels. Half have already been boxed up to go to the animal shelter. I just need to add the ones that are currently drying and then I am all set.

I can’t do that right now as I have one cat lying next to me and one cat lying on top of me. I couldn’t possibly move and upset my furry overlords!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 06/09/2021 13:31

This looks just what I need, what a great thread

Peridot1 · 06/09/2021 15:27

Thread is getting busy again!

I’m still full of a cold so not achieving much. And enjoying the nice sunshine so sitting reading in the garden a lot.

Fairly on top of washing. Have ordered some vacuum duvet storage bags from Lakeland so once they arrive I can finish the airing cupboard which I started a few weeks ago.

Today I did some washing, got dog hair off the carpet in the bottom stair where the dog likes to lie - she is black and the carpet is beige.

I also vacuumed all the spider webs in the utility room.

@Sparklynewname - glad to read your DS is brighter.

CharityDingle · 07/09/2021 09:53

Today - clear and clean out fridge. Tidy cooking utensils drawer.

Sound like small tasks, but for various reasons, I have been at an almost standstill the last few weeks, so each small thing is a step forward.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/09/2021 10:52

My animal shelter box has been packed so that is a big tick for me.

I need to do laundry. Again. How do I go through clothes so quickly? I’m considering becoming a nudist.

And I have almost finished the bathroom cupboards reshuffle. Very happy about that. I think I’ll be able to complete that tonight.

SydneyCarton · 07/09/2021 11:57

Some tins taken to the food bank which has cleared a bit of space on the shelf.

Kettle descaled and microwave cleaned, also started a bag for textile recycling with some holey leggings

Booked a furniture collection for Friday for the council to take away our horrible sofa and a chest of drawers - sofa will be replaced with our other slightly-less-horrible sofa, and chest of drawers replaced with a wardrobe for both girls to use which should give some more space in their bedroom

Raaraaboonah · 09/09/2021 09:56

Boys are all safely back at school but work has ramped right up so no time to really take stock of what needs to be done. I have managed to book lunch tables for both boys at school on their birthdays - the school do a party table where they have fun food and can invite some friends on their birthdays but they always get booked up way in advance. I've managed to actually get one on one of their birthdays so i'm taking that as a minor victory.

Big projects to start making progress on is sourcing a replacement car after ours failed its MOT in June and converting an outbuilding into a gym/treadmill room ready for when it is dark so I can run in safety. Treadmill is firmly on the christmas list so need to get it sorted by then. It needs to be cleared of the enormous amount of stuff in there - tip, sell, giveaway etc then redecorated and lighting needs sorting. Not so much a project a day but if I can make a bit of progress on this each day that will be positive!

peaceanddove · 09/09/2021 10:13

Oh I love this! I officially retired a few weeks back and have been getting on top of all those little house jobs that just pile up in the background.

So, yesterday I decided to pretty-up the utility room. I decanted my washing tablets into two smart tin boxes from Etsy, and fabric softener into a glass bottle. Also decanted Vanish powder into a nice screw top jar from TK Maxx. Makes doing the laundry a bit more aesthetically pleasing.

Today, I'm building a tall shoe rack I ordered off eBay which will fit in an upstairs cupboard. It's going to house lots of my shoes, leaving the show rack in the utility free just for DD's trainers and DH's shoes - thus instantly making utility 10 times tidier.

Peridot1 · 14/09/2021 10:03

Checking back in as I need to get back into the swing of getting things done. I’m ok on the day to day stuff but need motivation for the extras!

So today it’s airing cupboard sorting. I’ve bought vacuum storage bags for duvets and I need to sort what needs to be washed and sort out the piles of bedding. DS is heading off back to uni into a shared house at the weekend and some of his stuff is mixed into general so I want to get that sorted too.

Once the airing cupboard is sorted I can use the bed in the spare room to start getting my stuff sorted for going away on Monday. I’m off to Greece for a week. That will then lead in to sorting out my wardrobe and putting summer stuff away.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 14/09/2021 10:39

I haven’t posted on here for a wee! My boss is still a fuckwit, and an unreasonable and forgetful one at that. She has caused me all sorts of issues and I am quite pissed off about it. But tomorrow is my last day at work for couple of weeks so I can get myself (and the house) sorted out.

The plan in the next few days is to:
Sort through clothes in wardrobe
Rearrange clothes in wardrobe
Box up the stuff I don’t wear but want to keep
Empty and rearrange laundry room cupboards
Gardening

Should keep me busy for a while!

Chunkymonkey123 · 14/09/2021 20:14

Today I sorted out our coffee table (4 big drawers) and moved most stuff elsewhere as we are hoping to get rid of it eventually. I also got rid of some books from one child’s bookcase, need to do the other soon.
I’ve also booked a chimney sweep.
At work tomorrow so not sure what I’ll do but will try to throw some more stuff out.

Peridot1 · 15/09/2021 10:25

Morning all.

Sorry your boss is being a pain @DifficultBloodyWoman. Sounds very frustrating.

Got the airing cupboard pretty sorted yesterday. Still have duvets to sort but as i will be switching summer to winter duvets I will do those gradually. Summer ones will be cleaned before being packed away.

Have a pile of things to go to charity.

Also got some things put up into the loft and got a suitcase down for me.

Tidied the utility room a bit too.

Today the cleaners are in so a general tidy and finishing airing cupboard- rewashed some bedding and pillowcases that were really creased so they need to be put away.

Next task is to sort the Tupperware drawer. We have far too much of it.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 15/09/2021 14:13

Thanks, Peridot. DH says I can’t keep calling her ‘fuckwit’ but she is just going from bad to worse.

Anyway, good luck with your Tupperware. I now use Ikea 365. Different size glass containers that all work with the same size lids. No more searching for the right lid!

I did the gardening bits and bobs today, and treated the garden to anew house pipe from Aldi. It is a coil like a slinky and therefore looks much tidier when I just dump it by the patio door.

Wardrobe and laundry room cupboard remaining.

Sort through clothes in wardrobe
Rearrange clothes in wardrobe
Box up the stuff I don’t wear but want to keep
Empty and rearrange laundry room cupboards
-Gardening-

Peridot1 · 16/09/2021 09:35

I’d say you can call her whatever you like @DifficultBloodyWoman! Although as that comes from someone who once threw some papers at my boss, told him to bloody do it all himself as I quit and then grabbed my stuff and left I’m possibly not the best person to take advice from! (He sent someone after me, apologised and I went back next day. He admitted he was being a dick.)

Tupperware drawer not done. Not sure what I did yesterday!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 20/09/2021 14:53

Peridot, your boss probably deserved and I admire you for having done that. I threatened (my husband) that I would quit three times today. But then I spoke to a colleague who started at the same time and have been reassured that it’s them, not me. Lovely colleague wanted to quit but was persuaded to do one class a week.

How is your Tupperware drawer?

My wardrobe and laundry room remain outstanding. However, I cleaned my fridge and threw out a lot of DH’s weird expired sauces. If I may say so, it looks bloody amazing. And I can actually find stuff again!

Chunkymonkey123 · 20/09/2021 16:34

Today I’ve batch made soup and wiped sticky handprints off the kitchen walls.
I’ve got some time tomorrow so I’m going to aim to fill a bin bag from the playroom and maybe do a tip run of old pillows etc which are taking up space in the wardrobe.
I got a robot hoover yesterday so I had to clear the floors so that could work and it’s amazing what a difference that has made.
Another job is filling up my change purse in the car.

Peridot1 · 22/09/2021 16:17

DifficultBloodyWoman - he definitely did deserve it but it’s not necessarily an action I would recommend! We were actually good friends so he knew he’d pushed me too far.

Tupperware drawer is still a mess. I’m currently in Greece for a week so I don’t care! I concentrated on getting sorted for my holiday and decided to leave drawer till I get back,

Sparklynewname · 23/09/2021 18:18

I haven’t updated for weeks!
I got DDs extra cupboard and a Kallax unit from IKEA and got it all assembled and her room sorted.
We have had a nice weekend away last week and have just been managing to keep on top of the general cleaning.
DS has had a dodgy mole removed today. I’m working tomorrow and Saturday so won’t be achieving anything really for the next little while.
