One project a day- 2nd thread!

BlueLobelia · 19/05/2021 19:01

Welcome to everyone, old hats, lurkers and newbies.

This is a thread where we try and achieve something, no matter how small, a day.

This was the preamble to the previous thread ;

''......many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :) ''

everyone welcome!

I need to - buy a pressure washer and send DH to the local fish place and get stuff that reduces excessive nitrite in my garden pond (poor fish).

Oh and prune the shrubs around the garden pond as the debris is probably contributing to said nitrite.

Morning all.

Can’t say I did much on my lists from Monday but did -

Clean inside of shower doors
Sort car service out - it’s being picked up today
Moved tools to shed
Towel wash

My dad is being admitted to hospital today although he is not overly happy about it. He has two different cancers - gastric and bowel. With the current symptoms oncology want him in to do a head CT and sort his pain out. He has ‘logical’ reasons for all his symptoms and doesn’t put them down to the cancer. He has definitely declined over last few days. More pain in back and shoulders, blurry eye issue, weakness and bowel issues. I was due to fly back to UK tomorrow but am now staying here until at least Tuesday. No excuse not to do the jobs on the list.

And while I’m here things are being done at home too. Slab for new shed has been laid and tiler comes today to tile our downstairs cloakroom. On the other hand DS goes to clear out his uni accommodation today so I’m sure that will need sorting when I get back.

Iceisnice · 09/06/2021 08:04

@Peridot1, sorry to hear your dad is in more pain. Hope you get some answers from Dr.
Today I have ordered a teepee for the garden for the DC, was almost half price so chuffed with that. Should be here in a couple of days so that is exciting- they have no idea it is coming.
Today I have tonnes of things to do and have no idea where to start....
Hope you all have a lovely day.

mamakoukla · 09/06/2021 20:12

Flowers Peridot1. Must be good to have you with him at the moment

Well I kept promising I’d get the paint for the bathroom. Nearly there! I called the shop and I’m about to go collect paint chips. I kept chickening out but just had a just do it moment so leapt on it!

mamakoukla · 09/06/2021 21:30

Paint is ordered and will pick up tomorrow! It’s only taken me about…. 14 months to get to this stage. One project a day, or at least a part of a larger project - it works!

Sparklynewname · 09/06/2021 23:15

First coat of paint done on the dining room. DH was cutting in when I got home from work and it was so so purple that I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was drying so much darker than I thought it was going to be. I took the woofers out for a walk and he had finished the whole room when I got back and it looks great. I’m so relieved and happy!
It’s our 20th wedding anniversary today so we had a Chinese takeaway to celebrate which was nice.
I had a long period in lead today so my legs are really really aching. I have a day off tomorrow so will have a lie in and then do some skirting board banging.

Iceisnice · 10/06/2021 12:06

Received letter yesterday with an appointment for later this month for a consultation re umbilical hernia, well surprised was expecting to wait a year! Didn't achieve anything yesterday but hopeful for today.

mamakoukla · 10/06/2021 13:17

That’s good Iceisnice. Hopefully the ball keeps rolling at a good pace now.

Off to collect paint shortly and a quick trip to the grocery shop. Then look at what’s on the not done chore list

BlueLobelia · 10/06/2021 13:56

@Iceisnice I hope you can get that sorted soon.

@Peridot1 hope your dad is okay.

Thanks to everyone.

Today I have:

  1. Paid our cleaner
  2. Paid for DS1's residential trip
  3. Reported a scamm caller to actionfraud
  4. Booked an appointment for tooth whitening (in 4 months time- the first I could get!!) as part of my 'pay more attention to BlueLobelia's appearance' mini-project)
  5. Booked the dog for blood tests to see how her cushings disease is progressing
  6. Booked the cat in for tests as she may have a tumour somewhere.
  7. decided on the date I am giving notice at work
  8. Booked some annual leave for next week

And that was in my lunchbreak. :)

Hi all

Good news on the appointment for your hernia @Iceisnice.

Thanks for all the good wishes re my Dad. Yesterday was hard. He is now is hospital and thankfully things are not as bad as we feared. Fingers crossed.

I couldn’t settle to much yesterday but managed wash the hall and sitting room floor, dusted stuff on a shelf and got rid of some cobwebs, emptied a drawer of a load of coins, did some washing.

Today I have cleared out the cutlery drawer and threw out a load of rubbish. Cleaned out the fridge. Did a towel wash. Did a supermarket shop. Am about to wash the tiles in the kitchen and the kitchen floor.

Mogloveseggs · 10/06/2021 19:56

@Peridot1 glad your Df is comfortable in hospital

Today I paid the credit card I was supposed to pay two days ago. Also sorted a return parcel but need to take it tomorrow.
Working a full day tomorrow and it's normally my day off Sad. The money will go towards the car service though. So just looking around for what I can do tonight so that tomorrow isn't as stressful. Think I'll start by sorting everyone's dinners out now and washing up.

DownUdderer · 11/06/2021 05:01

Hi everyone. I'm not up to much at the moment. I'm just trying to prioritize mental health for myself, so I'm trying to feel my feelings and just ride with it. Sorry if that sounds stupid.

DownUdderer · 11/06/2021 05:01

I've booked my vaccine today.

Fnib · 11/06/2021 10:51

Flowers @DownUdderer
I've had a week a bit like that too!
@BlueLobelia crikey that's impressive!
I've been maintaining stuff but not done anything extra, though I did send a birthday card this morning.
Hugs all round Cake Brew

DifficultBloodyWoman · 11/06/2021 12:50

@DownUdderer it doesn’t sound stupid. Sometimes, we just need to hit a pause button on ‘events’ and actually feel things.

Today, I did some paperwork for a job offer. I have (sort of) been offered a job but haven’t seen a contract yet. I had to run around to get some papers signed (proof of quals etc). I also did some useful stuff at the charity shop I volunteer in. Other than that, I have no clue where my time went today.

But tomorrow is another day and another to do list.

  • clean floors (I will do my best to palm this off to DH)
  • clean & tidy laundry room
  • start washing the couch covers
  • start one of the three sewing projects I have on the go
  • polish furniture
BlueLobelia · 12/06/2021 07:36

@DownUdderer you are right to prioritise your mental health, always. Thanks

BlueLobelia · 12/06/2021 07:38

@Fnib i need to send b'day cards for my parents. I'm already late though as they live abroad.

@DifficultBloodyWoman congrats on the new job!

No big plans today. It might be a regular sort of housework day as I am a bit behind.

Mogloveseggs · 12/06/2021 08:56

@DownUdderer Flowers

Parcel to post today
A mountain of clothes to put away
Sort out the bookcases
Sort the hall cupboard

Just had to rescue the cat. He sleeps in Dd room and she was away last night so he was stuck on the windowsill as he couldn't get down as I pinched the chair to get something last night and didn't put it back! So need to put that back too.

Peridot1 · 12/06/2021 09:54

Morning all.

Absolutely prioritise your mental health @DownUdderer. So important to recognise that you need that. I remember reading an article earlier in the year about the pandemic and it’s effect on our mental health. It said it’s very important to acknowledge how we are feeling. Maybe sit with a notebook and write down our feelings and thoughts. Sit with it for a while and acknowledge it is perfectly ok to feel WHATEVER it is we are feeling. The article was about the pandemic but I really think it applies to life in general. We all have stress and situations that cause us stress. We all feel down at times. Acknowledging that and looking after ourselves is absolutely the right thing to do.

Dad update is that he is still in hospital. He has apparently had a series of small strokes. The damage to his vision could be permanent. And the mass in his chest is pressing on a vein leading to the heart. They may do radiotherapy to try to shrink the mass but it is all palliative at this stage. Stressful and I will be here for at least another week or so.

Grateful to be able to be here but also frustrated as I need to do so much at home!

I didn’t do much yesterday or Thursday so need to revisit my lists . Need to wash the kitchen floor. Also want to clear out another kitchen drawer. And the cupboard under the kitchen sink. There are bottles of stuff i there that were here when I moved out. In 1987!

Have fallen off the project bandwagon for a while. Just coming to the end of a self isolation period following the kids getting infected with Covid! Have been trying to work from home as normal but much harder with all of us stuck at home. Consequently, nothing really achieved beyond keeping everyone fed!

That's awful. Thanks I hope your family are much much better.

Just come across this thread and I love the idea of it - something, however small, every day soon adds up. Sometimes it takes as much energy to achieve small things as much as the big stuff

BlueLobelia · 13/06/2021 07:10

Welcome!! :)

yesterday i only managed to tidy the kitchen but even that was a bit touch and go. i did sit in my (now blooming thanks to this thread!) garden and read a silly chick lit book and drank too much wine then had takeaway Chinese. So it was all good.

Peridot1 · 13/06/2021 08:05

That sounds lovely @BlueLobelia.

I didn’t do anything from my list yesterday but I did empty a large Tupperware box of biscuits and crackers and chocolate that was all way past use by dates. Washed the box out and repurposed a basket to store the paperwork that Dad was keeping on top of the Tupperware box.

Bought some kitchen degreaser to do the tiles and cooker in the kitchen.

And drove to the beach for a walk which I’ve been wanting to do since I got here. It was a bit blowy but just sitting on a rock watching the sea and smelling the air was great. Got fish and chips on the way home for dinner.

Some washing today and my sister and her family are coming over for lunch.

mum2jakie · 13/06/2021 09:04

The kids haven't been poorly at all luckily. One with no symptoms and one with a very mild cold. Just bored with all squeezed into one small house for a prolonged period!
