One project a day- 2nd thread!

BlueLobelia · 19/05/2021 19:01

Welcome to everyone, old hats, lurkers and newbies.

This is a thread where we try and achieve something, no matter how small, a day.

This was the preamble to the previous thread ;

''......many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :) ''

everyone welcome!

Not sure if I’ll manage anything today. I feel like I need to regroup - I’ve made progress on lots of different projects (all decluttering/organising related) and really must not start any more.

Need a tip run before anything TBH as that will free up some space. Not even fussed about the stuff in the garden, just a few bulky items taking up room in cupboards. Also must book to get the charity clothes collected.

SingToTheSky · 13/06/2021 09:46

Yesterday’s project was good - decided to go through the bedding properly. As I’d got rid of a couple of sheets with holes, and folded some tatty but intact ones into a “sheets for painting” bag, I managed to neatly fold what remains into two drawers, whereas before it was messily shoved into three.

Now what to do with the spare drawer?! I could put bags of clothing in - got a few bits of next (and next next!) size clothing for the younger two, plus spare doboks for DS’ taekwondo... not sure if that’s the best use of the space when they’re already in bags though 🤔 but I also don’t want to just shove any old thing in there.

Sparklynewname · 13/06/2021 13:48

I had a busy day yesterday. Cut the lawn and more housework projects. Weather was incredibly hot and the dogs follow me around outside so I have to come in for them to cool down.
Labradog has dug a massive huge hole in the flower bed next to the pear tree. I might just leave it there ready for when one of them dies. Give me a head start on the hole 😂. I reckon it might be the cat first. She’s 13 now and getting a bit demented.
Today DS and I have cleared and cleaned the dining room so it is fully empty ready for flooring man to start tomorrow.
When DH gets back from his mum’s we are going to put the mirror back up. He wanted to do it before he went but DS was in bed and it’s such a heavy mirror I want help. Always gives me the fear!
I decided on Friday that something has to change about work. I am so unhappy at the moment. I am multi skilled (sorry for brag) but it means that I am always used as an infill. Not always a problem but I am getting sick to death of never doing my actual job while others in the team do literally naff all and get away with it. It’s always “Oh sparkly will do it”

Mogloveseggs · 13/06/2021 20:19

@BlueLobelia sounds a lovely day!

Well I didn't sort the cupboard or the bookcases. So they need doing tomorrow.
No jobs today-between work and housework I've no energy left lol. Oh well actually I've replanted the hanging basket.
Tomorrow-fill in and post Dd assessment forms
Take Ds bike to the bike shop to get a new tyre.

Iceisnice · 13/06/2021 22:13

@Sparklynewname I used to have the same thing at work, super frustrating. The problem is that I like to learn new things and help people as much as possible, but that meant my willingness
to help got manipulated into everything being left to me.

Peridot1 · 14/06/2021 08:34

Morning all.

My BIL did some cutting back and weeding here yesterday so the compost bin is now full. They get emptied on Friday so I’m about to book to get the bin cleaned on Friday. My dad never used a food waste caddie and bags - just emptied food waste directly to the wheelie bin so it’s disgusting. Getting it washed and buying him a counter top food waste bin and bags. Again. I’m sure I did once before! We are going to have to get carers in I think so he needs a proper system.

Also going to book a window cleaner and I will do the insides gradually this week.

Going to change beds this week too. My bedding is currently in the washing machine. I’ll vacuum upstairs and clean the bedrooms too.

Feeling frustrated I’m not achieving anything in my own home but I’m having a pedicure this morning so that feels productive!

Just found this thread, and boy do I need it!

Currently on maternity leave with my second dc (now 9 weeks old) and have a toddler too. Struggle to stay on top of house work at the best of times, so had already started identifying 'projects' to work my way through as a motivational tool. Hopefully this thread will be extra motivation.

Key tasks currently are to finish sorting through dd's old clothes to see which are gender neutral enough to keep for ds, and then packaging up the rest for SIL who is due a little girl soon. Also, having a major declutter, tidy and clean of living areas, as have arranged a birthday celebration for dd, happening the day after we get back from holiday (didn't think that one through). So breaking it down, today's focus for that is sorting out/putting away toys in the living room.

Hello everyone! I have found a use for my too many mugs. Cleaned off kitchen and study windowsills and used 4 mugs as little vases for a cheap bunch of carnation. It's amazing how far one bunch stretches!
Currently looking at dressing table top and thinking I need to tidy and wipe that too.
It's flylady home blessing day today but I got a headstart as DH hoovered through yesterday, while I cleaned the loo and bath Smile

SingToTheSky · 14/06/2021 15:34

I’m really tired today but I’m hoping to start Project Airing Cupboard this evening. We have a cupboard that is meant to be for airing (just got a little heater at the bottom) and it is full of random crap. It needs to be my next target in order to continue the general decluttering, so I’m going to ask DD1 later if we can put a few bits in the corner of her room (she has a lot of empty space) and help move the stuff about so I can get on with it. It will be a temporary solution as we are hopefully doing a tip run soon, so should be ok.

Sparklynewname · 14/06/2021 17:56

Floor layer has started 🎉
I’ve been busy and n the garden again. As I have been digging, I have been collecting up stones which have come out of the wall, ready for when we get to rendering it.
3 lilies have been put in and I have more clearing to do.
Darn dog has been having another massive dig while my back was turned. I might have to hog tie them while I’m out there 😂

I love using mugs and jam jars and Fever tree tonic bottles, and nutella jars for flowers.

Fallen off the project wagon a bit as well as we had a few days away but hoping to get back on it now. Today’s project is to spend ten minutes going through the suitcase of spare clothes, taking out the summer stuff, putting away winter stuff and getting rid of anything that’s too small or no longer needed for the recycling bag. Also sink and toilet as part of my ongoing “keep the bathroom clean one bit at a time” project Smile

DownUdderer · 16/06/2021 06:57

Thank you to everyone who wished me well, it does mean a lot. I had got into the habit of pushing my feelings down and just soldiering on.

I'm sorry to read about your DF @Peridot1.

I've been doing some garden jobs. I'm getting a bit of an idea of what I want to achieve out there. I had seen gardening as a chore, but just recently I've begun to really enjoy it.

I have some workmen coming next week so this week I will just make sure all the rooms they need access to are suitably tidied.

Fnib · 16/06/2021 07:52

I hope you're feeling better now @DownUdderer Flowers

This thread has been an unexpected gardening inspiration to me as well. Neither DH nor myself have green fingers but we are tackling it the same way as we did the house, in baby steps, and it's really beginning to show.
I dream of growing a few vegetables, probably just in containers (currently have a couple of tomato plants and some mint and basil going strong) and I'd really like bee friendly flowers and the sort that I could cut and display round my newly minimalist house.
We have our first grandchild on the way and it would be fun to make a sensory garden too, as well as safe space to play.

Best wishes to you all in your endeavours. I love reading about them ❤

CharityDingle · 16/06/2021 09:43

Today's project is simply to map out the next four days. I find it helps to put a (rough) timeframe on a day, and it helps me to complete my project for a particular day.

It's very fluid, but it keeps me on track. I include times for exercise, meals and so forth, as well as whatever I need to get done around the house.

mamakoukla · 16/06/2021 11:57

Sometimes to let oneself just ‘be’ is an incredible kindness. It was a lesson hard learnt for me but it has been helpful especially during difficult periods in my life. To just be meant I could give myself permission to take it easier when I needed to. Flowers

This thread really is a gift! I stepped away for a few days as I had a writing project I was asked to do. Something new for me and it was enjoyable. I am working at saying yes to more things…. so I had to do it! Our garden is also reaping the benefits as it has had a bit more love. I still do have some plants that haven’t quite made it into the soil and are still in pots so I should perhaps figure that out.

Today I have some emails and other online stuff that needs done. This thread has stopped me procrastinating and that’s brilliant. I will also set aside an hour or so to come up with a plan for the next two weeks as it will be hectic. Having a plan means at least it can be changed and I work better that way.

Much love to all

BlueLobelia · 16/06/2021 14:04

I am in full procrastination mode today! I have taped up some roses that have been 'played with' by the foxes.

Well, a project of sorts. DS2 is doing his sex and relationships education classes at school. The ride home from school meant close questioning him about the details of what LGBQT means, plus asking what a wet dream is and what periods are and then finishing with him asking me if the tooth fairy and Santa are real. (There were some tears).

Bloody shattered after that car ride and I need to recover.

*close questioning FROM him that should have said.

Crikey!! I bet you need a drink. It all seems very much more complicated than it used to be and the pressure is on not to say the wrong thing.
How old is he? Flowers

BlueLobelia · 16/06/2021 18:25

almost 11!

[wipes forehead]

Seemed to just all sort of pass DS1 by (he's 2 years older) and he just absorbed the lessons at school and from memory asked hardly anything.

mamakoukla · 16/06/2021 20:21

@BlueLobelia that sounds exhausting! I can remember a few years back, as we were driving along, a voice piping up from the back “Mummy…. How do antelopes have sex?”

Mogloveseggs · 16/06/2021 21:23

Ds had a full conversation with my mum the other day about where babies come from after he overheard on the radio about China encouraging more children. She tried to deflect him but nope he wasn't having it Grin

Sparklynewname · 16/06/2021 21:52

I had to go and pick DS up from school when he had his first phse lesson as he came over all faint and went grey. So shy.

Yesterday was just a folding of the washing day and more pottering in the garden.
Today just garden pottering. Both days have had a driving lesson and we tackled paraphrasing this evening!

Sparklynewname · 16/06/2021 21:52

Not paraphrasing, parallel parking!
