Snobbiest places in the UK?

865 replies

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

@Bracknellite 🤣🤣

Triphazard101 · 16/05/2021 18:29

Bayley and Sage is quite posh/expensive
We were ever so excited when we got one near us, even though we didn’t intend to ever go there!

I was once walking past with toddler DS who grabbed a peach from their display outside, so I went inside to offer to pay for it
They charged me something utterly mind boggling like £4

That's another new one to me.
£4 for a peach - I dont think I would go there either!Grin (although I might be tempted out of curiosity!)

Ilkley

JerushaSturgis · 16/05/2021 18:31

Yarm definitely has delusions of grandeur!

AIMummy · 16/05/2021 18:39

Brentwood in Essex

GameSetMatch · 16/05/2021 18:39

Lytham, it’s not even that great but the locals think they are something else. There’s a huge Booths in Lytham...

longwayoff · 16/05/2021 18:57

Tetbury, Glos where even the estate agent signs come in heritage paint colours.

Right, well I've put the afternoon to good use and I have compiled a leader board of the most snobby places in the UK according to the number of nominations on this thread. So without further ado, here is the Snobby Hall of Fame UK.

As of 18:25 this evening polling closed and the results are now in. In reverse order.......

(((drumroll...))))

In at number 8, jointly with 5 votes each are:

Chichester
Sutton Coldfield
Winchester

Joint 7th place with 6 votes each are:

Alderley Edge
St Albans
Horsham

Joint 6th place with 7 votes:

Weybridge
Wilmslow

At joint number 5 with 8 votes each:

Guildford
Cobham
Beasonsfield

At joint number 4 with 10 votes it's:

Oxford
Solihull
Edinburgh (various suburbs of)

At number 3, all by itself with 11 votes it's:

Harrogate

Joint runners up with 12 points each and sparkly tiaras goes to:

Harpenden
Salcombe

And in first place with the winner's crown and a spectacular 22 votes, making the residents of all other snobby towns look like amateurs, it's......

BATH! StarFlowers

Take a bow, Bath. Sneer long and prosper.

@FatRascalsAndJam

I’m surprised to see 15 pages before Yarm got a mention! See also any town/village with a TS postcode that proclaims to be in North Yorkshire...

Actually, on that note - I think any place where the majority of residents choose to align themselves with a ‘naicer’ neighbouring area than the one they’re actually in!

Hutton Rudby has a TS postcode and is most definitely North Yorkshire.

Annoymoususer · 16/05/2021 19:18

@Luzina

I think the snobbiest places are sometimes the nice villages near to not-so-nice towns. It’s so easy to feel “better than” in your pleasant village where the nearby town is a shithole
I live in a not so nice town I think everywhere is snobby because I'm from a shitehole but its where I call home. Lol

Roominmyhouse · 16/05/2021 19:23

Another vote for Tunbridge Wells, sorry ‘Royal’ Tunbridge Wells. It’s just not as nice as the people who I know that live there think it is.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 16/05/2021 19:27

@Cinclus

I also suspect Southsea, as I know people who are always at pains to explain that they live in Southsea and not (...shudder...) Portsmouth.
I worked in Portsmouth for a year and can confirm that the centre of it is indeed a shit hole. Lived in Southsea, it's ok there though rough around the edges. A few nice grassy and beach bits but wouldn't risk going barefoot on them....

Oldraver · 16/05/2021 19:30

@Diggingaholeformyself

Oldraver I know the town you're talking about.

Totally agree re West Oxfordshire, if you want a full on snobbery experience then visit Burford garden centre. It's heaving with braying families who give awful looks to people they deem too inferior to being here.

Try working there as I did for a while, the absolute deference they expect toward customers

And yes those braying families who go in the cafe and think it perfectly acceptable to let their darling DC's completely trash the floor with their discarded food..for the staff to pick up

Brindisi32 · 16/05/2021 19:40

Southwold, Alburgh, Holt, Dartmouth, Bath

PiccalilliChilli · 16/05/2021 20:49

Windsor. Ran into the wrath of a manager of a chain restaurant who thought she was managing the Ivy...she wasn't. Just a pedestrian chain restaurant. We had been in Windsor all day and looked a bit hot and crumpled...she looked up and down at us and said, "Reservation?" Now back in Sarf London we have been to a sister branch and you just turned up. When we said we were blagging it she looked us up and down again, and said, "I see. Well we are very busy. Maybe McDonalds might accommodate you." Then she turned her back on us! The place was busy, but not full. We decided to hightail it back to Waterloo where we knew our custom would be appreciated.

ScienceSensibility · 16/05/2021 21:39

@mummyh2016

Those that have said Sutton Coldfield, I wouldn't say all of Sutton, imo Four Oaks is the snobby bit.
I was born and brought up in Little Aston, Four Oaks and didn’t think it was snobby. Lots of very nice people.

But now I live in Harpenden, which has also been given the thumbs down on the snobby scale so maybe I am just oblivious!

I would think Mayfair is snobby and Barnes as PP said.

Anon778833 · 16/05/2021 21:49

Hahahaha my cousin lives in Four Oaks. They are definitely the sort of people who want to create an impression.

Aspiringmatriarch · 16/05/2021 21:50

Berkhamsted, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross are the three I've found most obnoxiously snobbish. Based in South East so I don't know so much about other areas. Oxford has a particular type of intellectual, shabby-chic snobbery. Have to admit it's one of my favourite places thoughBlush.

Pebbledashery · 16/05/2021 21:51

Bicester Village was full of snobbery.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 16/05/2021 21:52

Entitled isn’t the same as snobby - admittedly entitled is not a nice characteristic but it’s not snobby

I think it depends why people are entitled though - if it's because they are quite affluent, then that is being snobby. Like thinking you have more right to be on the roads in your expensive SUV than the plebs driving a Ford Fiesta.

Ewe202 · 16/05/2021 21:55

I always laugh with the number of people I know who think Harrogate is snobby/posh. It’s one of the dullest, grey holes I’ve visited and I’ve given it a few chances. The entire place makes me think of a giant care home. Yawn!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 16/05/2021 21:56

I once lived in Sutton Coldfield in a very unsnobby part. Don't you have to live near the park?
