Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

@Lonelycrab

New Forest area, it’s been mentioned a few times. Home of the gammon faced swivel eye red trouser brigade who treat the forest like an extension of their garden.

I mean ffs look at the state of this lot. They run the Forest. Watch out if you ever intend to ride a bike down that way...

My huge extended family used to live in the forest, built their own homes, but weren't good enough for the snobby Londoners who came up with their money. They persuaded government to evict us, then they moved in. My parents left the forest and moved north where I was born. This is how the forest should be.

Harpenden.

The only place I know where people turn their noses up at Waitrose.

HappyHappyHippocampus · 16/05/2021 16:08

Most places in suburban Surrey. And they really have nothing to be snobby about.....

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 16/05/2021 16:11

Oundle. And it has got worse since they've had a Waitrose. Grin

Lj8893 · 16/05/2021 16:16

I knew Sherborne would be mentioned!
I am from there, born and bred, and moved away a few years ago. It is very snobby and that’s due to the “naice” appearance on the surface with the private schools and abbey etc.
But scratch at that surface (not very deep) and it is an absolute shithole with a massive massive drug problem!!!
Even the druggies are snobby though as they live in Sherborne and not Yeovil Hmm

pointyshoes · 16/05/2021 17:00

Lots of people seem to be equating posh/wealthy with snobby. They’re not the same at all. It’s perfectly possible for a wealthy town to have nice residents. A pp complained about people being entitled. Entitled isn’t the same as snobby - admittedly entitled is not a nice characteristic but it’s not snobby

SunflowersAndLavender · 16/05/2021 17:31

Very handy thread this. Several places I've lived or live in have been mentioned. If I ever need to move I've already got a shortlist. Thanks.

Yeah but posh isn't the same as snobby.

Well it shouldn't be, but unfortunately for many it is exactly the same. Some people just can't distinguish between the two. Either because they don't really understand the difference, or they do, but they like to assume that all posh or rich people must be snobbish by default.

Triphazard101 · 16/05/2021 17:34

I'm interested to hear where is more posh than waitrose?Confused
Surely not everyone goes to fortnum and Mason? Or partridges (although I've only seen that in London)

Rosehip10 · 16/05/2021 17:36

@Triphazard101 Booths.

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 17:39

And I agree, I do find people from Surrey can be very smug about it, even if they live somewhere decidedly unimpressive themselves, it's still Surrey, so they feel entitled to bask in the cache and look down on people from counties they perceive to be lesser.

This is why you get people from Mitcham saying they live in Surrey 😂

Triphazard101 · 16/05/2021 17:39

Oh ok. I've only ever heard of Booths on MN , and I didnt know how it rated against other supermarkets (I've never seen one in RL - maybe I havent been anywhere posh enough?)

Mummy194 · 16/05/2021 17:53

It reminds me of the , er, spin on the old British Rail slogan --
Harwich for the Continent (when you could get there by train and boat from London stations)
Which was transformed into
Harwich for the Continent,
Frinton for the incontinent.

Hahaha, that last line.
We have an older relative who lives in Holland on sea. She always corrects us if we say we are going to see her at Clacton on sea. Even though her main rails station is Clacton and so is the main Sainsbury's and high street. That is how I learned about the Frinton snobbery. They also see themselves superior due to water sports (that most residents can't actually engage in). Apparently, Roger Moore used to live there?
All nicely manicured lawns, but come on, it's all sleepy town down there. Is there even a senior school in the area? I doubt there are any usual snobby shops either. It all seems so silly to be a snob over there.

longwayoff · 16/05/2021 17:54

A couple of years ago, the people of Winchester elected Kevin the Big Issue seller to turn on the Christmas lights instead of inviting a witless zleb to do so. Is that ultra inverse snobbery or just good sense?

CatrinVennastin · 16/05/2021 17:57

@DeclineandFall I am with you on Newton Mearns!!! It’s a boring suburb with massive delusions of grandeur.

longwayoff · 16/05/2021 17:58

triphazard London. Lidgate. For meat and game.

Fairyfalls · 16/05/2021 18:00

Oxford

Bayley and Sage is quite posh/expensive We were ever so excited when we got one near us, even though we didn’t intend to ever go there!

I was once walking past with toddler DS who grabbed a peach from their display outside, so I went inside to offer to pay for it
They charged me something utterly mind boggling like £4

I don't have an issue with the real 'old money' upper class types. I once got chatting to a nice elderly lady at a kids' activity that my dc was attending in the school holidays. She was lovely, pointed out her grand-dc in the distance and introduced me to her DIL who was with her. Then the organiser of the event bustled up, all of a dither and said to the woman: "Good afternoon, Your Grace". Grin

Yes, I had been gossiping with a duchess for half an hour and I'd had no idea who she was.

I've worked a few times at the ancestral seat of the Bowes-Lyon family, at the house the Queen Mum spent a lot of her childhood, and have had several chats with the residents.

Genuinely had no idea who was family and who was staff till I heard one refer to the other as "Your Grace"

Cinclus · 16/05/2021 18:27

I also suspect Southsea, as I know people who are always at pains to explain that they live in Southsea and not (...shudder...) Portsmouth.

Peachypips78 · 16/05/2021 18:28

@Waxonwaxoff0 I'm in Woodbury!

I came on to say Topsham. And a bit Woodbury Hmm
