Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

Who do the people of Basildon think they’re better than?

Well they do have a mini 'Hollywood' sign announcing their Basildonness.

Everydayiwakeupanditsmonday · 16/05/2021 22:09

Broadway

Dinas Powys in the Vales of Glamorgan. A breathtakingly dull little village whose residents all think they’re something special.

Pontcanna in Cardiff - lots of media types who really do think they’re special. They’re just a bit obnoxious really. The housing stock there is lovely and it has its own little thing going on in terms of shops, restaurants etc so it is at least a bit interesting.

Lisvane in Cardiff - populated by champagne socialists and closet Tories. Absolutely nothing to do there.

Mumbles - absolutely nothing special, irrelevant little place you drive through to get to the beautiful Gower coast.

Lewes - stayed with residents who were friends of my then partner. Met plenty of other residents as they were part of the bonfire society and it was “Bonfire” at the time. Nowhere near as right on and easy going as they thought but plenty prejudiced and ignorant.

I need a UK road trip I think. Revisit some of these 'snobby' towns and see what's changed, as I don't recognise some of these descriptions

I reckon an MN coach tour Grin

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 16/05/2021 22:23

@Pebbledashery

Bicester Village was full of snobbery.
That's funny because if the people who shopped there were actually dripping in cash they wouldn't need to be at a soulless place full of discount designer outlets.....I'd be off to Knightsbridge or Kings Road instead!
longwayoff · 16/05/2021 22:27

I yearn for the MN coach trip. Can we all book into B&Bs and critique them a la 4 In a Bed?

Fizbosshoes · 16/05/2021 22:34

Can we all book into B&Bs and critique them a la 4 In a Bed?

That might be a problem given that it seems at least half of MN find all bodily functions ensuite bathrooms grim, vile and boak, and probably the same proportion cant eat food prepared by anyone else , which will rule out breakfast....

OverByYer · 16/05/2021 22:35

Barnes

Caerleon in Newport. Newport is generally a dive but the residents of Caerleon which is part of Newport like to talk about how they live in the ‘village’.

SemperIdem · 16/05/2021 22:42

Forgot about Caerleon @OverByYer

Adding “The Knap” area of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice area but they do like to pretend as though the rest of Barry isn’t part of the same town.

yes we love the sign that we council tax payers paid for

@Tambora

Harpenden.

The only place I know where people turn their noses up at Waitrose.

That’s because the Waitrose in Harpenden isn’t great for many reasons - Sainsbury’s is better or the Welwyn or St Albans Waitrose branch.
theceilingnerfgunblackdot · 17/05/2021 06:23

Abersoch

Full of the red trouser brigade, no one would give way to a buggy, ever so ended up in the road frequently. Cafe we went in for lunch was full of people who looked like a smile would make their face fracture.
Went in a couple of shops for a mooch and was stared at or followed round.
I'm fairly well presented and my children are not thugs but definitely felt the snob factor there in a way I've only ever once felt before and that was when I had the misfortune to have dinner with a high court judge. That's a whole different thread!

Someone was shot down in flames on another thread for suggesting that the Waitrose branch nearest to them was awful. (Dirty, disorganised etc). Another person stated that this was because it was in a downtrodden area - without actually knowing where it was. One of the snobbiest things I’ve ever heard.
Be careful when you criticise Waitrose.
Shopping there is a status symbol for many.

😂😂 I think it's common knowledge that it's not a good Waitrose - at head office too. I wrote to them about their crappy rotten food having previously lived near a fabulous Waitrose in London - nothing changed.

I reckon an MN coach tour

@battenburgwithtea

I'll make some sandwiches and a flask of tea....

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2021 07:33

I haven't been to Bicester shopping outlet for years but what's anyone got to be snobby about going there? Confused

drinkingwineoutofamug · 17/05/2021 07:46

Handforth - parts of it
Wilmslow
Alderley edge
Prestbury
Poynton - why ?? Shit hole
Even parts of Macclesfield seem to be up their own arses.

I am so lucky to deal with pompous idiots from these areas daily.

Haha....yes, packed full of the speed boat loving Cheshire set (think Wilson's, Hale, Alderly Edge) in the summer. Very narrow pavements etc and no one ever moves out of the way! I suspect it's an entirely different town in the winter......
BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/05/2021 07:47

Ha! I forgot about Frinton. Frinton definitely deserves a mention - the whole 'inside the gates' thing is hilarious and very much in evidence in the mind of the locals. Like East/West Berlin.

Interestingly, I've lived in Jesmond before and not found it that bad. Posh, yes, but still fairly down to Earth, and tons of students. Used to absolutely mine sweep the charity shop on Acorn road though - it was all Zara, Hobbs, LK Bennett etc.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 17/05/2021 07:48

*Wlimslow not Wilson's! Blush

Bluesheep8 · 17/05/2021 08:53

Southwell in Nottinghamshire.

sadperson16 · 17/05/2021 09:09

Hale used to worth a glance for the charity shops. Its worse than ever now, full of paunchy men in striped shirts and the pollyfiller brigade.

B &B's, flask of tea and dare I suggest a notebook each for our findings. Let's do it

Yes, love a good rummage through the charity shops of Hale! Full of Jojo Mamman Bebe clothes and all sorts of nice surprises!
