Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

@Furries

Frinton-on-Sea is fairly snobby. The locals resisted for ages and were up in arms when the first (and only) pub opened there 20 years ago. Rather strict about no amusements, no ice-cream sellers on the beach etc as “we don’t want to turn into Clacton or Walton on the Naze, you know”!

They’re also very quick to let you know that if you don’t “live within the gates” then you’re not really from Frinton.

I’d visualised a quaint/pretty place (like Aldeburgh), accessed via some impressive wrought iron gates or something. I was very disappointed when I first went there - not quaint and “the gates” are flipping level crossing barriers 🤣

It reminds me of the , er, spin on the old British Rail slogan -- Harwich for the Continent (when you could get there by train and boat from London stations) Which was transformed into Harwich for the Continent, Frinton for the incontinent.
Overdon · 16/05/2021 13:56

Worcester - was made to feel unwelcome there.

Ilkley- they really think they are a breed apart , and they really hate being under the control of Bradford council.

Cheltenham.
Yes especially Lizzy way, they always say thank you after they've mugged you

Sorry I thought you meant Basildon in Essex, a huge new town/council estate

CatAndHisKit · 16/05/2021 14:10

I also think, probably Barnstaple in Devon - I haven't visited but came across a few people from there while on holiday abroad.

UnluckyMe · 16/05/2021 14:12

@lolaflores

Harrow on the hill is Posh. Pinner (and Eastcoat) are snobby. I have been told that .at Halloween, residents will answer the door to a coded knock known only by other residents. Pinner has quite the opinion of itself whereas up on the hill, the money whispers. I love how my working class blood thins when I go up there but only ever had a pleasant time in the church, in nearby shops and cafes down the last 30 odd years.
Paaaahaha!!! Pinner and Harrow are far from Posh! The only posh thing about HOTH is the Private school. Its like calling Watford Posh because there are lots 9f private schools and a grammar!

I lived in Winchester for a long time and 99% of the people I met were lovely. The people who ran what is surely the poshest corner shop in the UK were the loveliest. I recall one snooty florist.

Saucery · 16/05/2021 14:25

@SunflowersAndLavender

I think it might have been Todmorden. Does that sound about right?
Yes, it could be Tod. Is Yorkshire now, was historically Lancashire. Not spent much time there, passed through for walking routes etc. Comfortably passed for parts of Royston Vasey when they filmed LoG there - quite possible there are a few Mrs Levinsons in the population Grin
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/05/2021 14:42

Who said Barnstaple? 😂
I’ve visited many times, since we used to have friends nearby. Nice enough but hardly snob central! And I suspect maybe with more than its fair share of poverty.

The more I read these posts, the more I think that, as a pp said, a lot of people are projecting their own insecurities/feelings of inferiority.

If people really are looking down their noses at anyone, I wonder if it could possibly be because their kid(s) are completely undisciplined little sods who are causing mayhem? Or at least running around screaming in inappropriate places.

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 16/05/2021 14:42

@Arghmyhip

Snobs are usually new money not old. So I would agree with Surrey and Crouch End.

Also, Bath and Edinburgh aren't twee - not sure the PP understands what twee means!

The entire county of Surrey has no old money? You clearly don’t have a clue!
Deathraystare · 16/05/2021 14:51

You'll be telling us next that Canvey Island is snobby.

Ha ha I lived there for a while. Nope not snobby.

Anon778833 · 16/05/2021 14:56

Surely affluent doesn't always mean snobby?

I'm thinking Solihull is affluent but the people don't strike me as snobby. Some of them are a bit flashy I agree.

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 16/05/2021 14:57

@debbrianna

West sussexes as a whole are snobs against the East sussex lots.
Yes and South Surrey thinks it better than West Sussex (they share a border) Grin
Anon778833 · 16/05/2021 14:57

@Overdon

Worcester - was made to feel unwelcome there.

Ilkley- they really think they are a breed apart , and they really hate being under the control of Bradford council.

I was born in Worcester. And I still live here. Yes, the people are incredibly rude and unfriendly and look at you in a judgemental way.
custardbear · 16/05/2021 15:05

@Rosehip10

West Bridgford is snobby and has a hatred of Nottingham.
How VERY dare you, you oik 😉
Mugsen · 16/05/2021 15:07

My town is here and yes it's the most unfriendly place I've ever lived.

goose1964 · 16/05/2021 15:12

I agree with Bath, there's an area of Bath that has Bristol phone numbers, you can't imagine how many people thought it was done deliberately to hide the fact they live in Bath an spend their weekends at the Wreck .

MrsCatE · 16/05/2021 15:20

Alexandra Shulman (former editor of Vogue) moved to Queens Park, London and suddenly loads of articles appeared in home sections of the Broadsheets / posh magazines about it being the new Notting Hiill - for those that couldn’t afford the massive Garden Square houses in Notting Hill now occupied by Russian oligarchs digging three storey basements with car lifts and Olympic size swimming pools.

BikeRunSki · 16/05/2021 15:22

Hessle, Willerby, Anlaby etc in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Every single person I’ve met from there (many), goes to great lengths to tell you that they are definitely in the East Riding and not in Hull, or south of Beverly, not west of Hull. They are correct, but it’s a deal! If Hull has to be mentioned, it’ll be given it’s Sunday name of Kingston upon Hull.

SunflowersAndLavender · 16/05/2021 15:34

Snobs are usually new money not old. So I would agree with Surrey and Crouch End.

ArghmyHip didn't say there was no old money at all in Surrey. Hmm She just implied there was lots of new money there. Which there is.

And I agree, I do find people from Surrey can be very smug about it, even if they live somewhere decidedly unimpressive themselves, it's still Surrey, so they feel entitled to bask in the cache and look down on people from counties they perceive to be lesser.

Lonelycrab · 16/05/2021 15:35

New Forest area, it’s been mentioned a few times. Home of the gammon faced swivel eye red trouser brigade who treat the forest like an extension of their garden.

I mean ffs look at the state of this lot. They run the Forest. Watch out if you ever intend to ride a bike down that way...

Snobbiest places in the UK?
SunflowersAndLavender · 16/05/2021 15:36

Oops. Cut and paste fail there. My above comment was to Howtobring who said:

The entire county of Surrey has no old money? You clearly don’t have a clue!

debbrianna · 16/05/2021 15:41

Horsham being the last stop to this greatness. How does Crawley compete with Guildford? 🙄
