Snobbiest places in the UK?

865 replies

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

Hampstead
Harpenden
St. Albans
Datchworth

CatrinVennastin · 15/05/2021 22:30

Oh and Llandaff and Cowbridge.

Namechangeme1 · 15/05/2021 22:31

Kingston upon Thames

Rosehip10 · 15/05/2021 22:31

@PollyPaintsFlowers Barnes may be snobby but that utterly wrong about the bus routes - the route 9 ran from mortlake to central London via Barnes for decades (and was replaced by the 209)

littlepattilou · 15/05/2021 22:32

Great. Another thread where people can sneer at other people for not measuring up to their standards, and berate them, and bash them, in the name of a 'light-hearted thread...' Hmm

@sadperson16

Hale

Used to be good charity shops and lovely , homely cafes.

ye Gods! its hideous now.

Yep! The place I was talking about! Absurd really when a few streets back nornal people live there.
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/05/2021 22:35

My ex's parents lived in Guildford. I'll never forget his mother telling my parents "My neighbour wants to buy our house, but she can't afford it as she lives in a 4 and this is a 5".

She was a real snob with no class and not actually that much money either. Never quite had the courage to remind her that she lived on an estate rather than owning one!

Didn't see it at the time as I found them very irritating in many ways, but in retrospect they were comedy gold! It was what I imagine sharing tea with Mrs Bucket and Alan Partridge would be like😂😂

MiddleParking · 15/05/2021 22:35

Bakewell. Not even snobby in a new money way, more like League of Gentleman snobby.

I love the story pp posted about the bakery where they were asked “do you want something?!” Grin

It’s the exact opposite!
Rosehip10 · 15/05/2021 22:37

Handbridge in Chester.

PermanentTemporary · 15/05/2021 22:38

I'd take Sevenoaks and refine it to the villages around Sevenoaks and Tonbridge. Though I'm not sure it's snobbery exactly, not really horrible to other people, just a vast self-satisfaction.

DancingWithWillard · 15/05/2021 22:38

About to read the replies but have to say as an income to Edinburgh I don’t find it particularly snobby! Certain people absolutely but not generally as a city. In fact it is very welcoming and warm.

Newpuppymummy · 15/05/2021 22:39

Fulham
Radlett

TossaCoinToYerWitcher · 15/05/2021 22:39

Remember the proper snobs pronounce it Shubun where as the local people call it shurborne.

Haha - a bit like Shrewsbury, where I grew up. Many will correct you that it should called "Shrowsbury", but actual long-term locals always call it "Shroosbury".

I actually live fairly near Sherborne now though. Yes, a bit snobby (as is much of rural Dorset) albeit its more a trendy, aspiring to be Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and/or Alex James from Blur (all organic produce, expensive yoga retreats and dressing your kids up like "Country Child" magazine).

tapdancingmum · 15/05/2021 22:39

Marlow is quite snobby and they used to go quite green if you asked them if they lived on the Colditz estate 🤣. An acquaintance moved to a new build in Marlow and was quite put out when it was mentioned this new estate was tagged onto an existing council housing estate so wasn't quite the posh area she portrayed. Also, mention to a Marlovian that they lost their HP postcode and have now been lumped in with Slough they stutter.... There are some lovely houses/areas in Marlow but I don't know why they think they are better than us when, as my DH describes it, it's just a high street with wanky shops and a river.

Beaconsfield - I totally agree with the other posters on here.

RobinHumphries · 15/05/2021 22:40

The Park in Nottingham.

Salcombe is not snobby though, you’re mistaking all the 2nd home owners for locals. At heart Salcombe is a crabbing port.

TheDogsMother · 15/05/2021 22:40

Horsham snobby ? When I lived there it was just incredibly dull. I left to move to Guildford 🤣

Lotusmonster · 15/05/2021 22:40

Cobham in Surrey ....local bistro is The Ivy.🙄

Furries · 15/05/2021 22:41

@ImAncient

I’m proper laughing at some of these. A friend is from a landed (?) family.

Anyway at our little village school there was a mum ‘M’ completely up her self. My friend drives a very old beaten up car & dresses as more proper shabby. ‘M’ makes a couple of comments saying how people like my friend let the school down. Friends Dh is a Mr. Friend is known as Mrs but Friend’s mum is ‘Lady X’ & was visiting. M hears teacher saying nice to see you Lady X .., cue M practically choking. Hilarious!! I’m not saying where but our local town has been mentioned!

Agreed. I’ve worked with a couple of Lords in my time and they were some of the most pleasant people I’ve worked with. Shabby-chic in dress sense, really polite, grateful for work undertaken, self-effacing and great sense of humour.

Very different to some of the people I’ve come across who’ve made big bucks working in finance!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/05/2021 22:41

@Newpuppymummy

Fulham Radlett
Yeah, I've been to Fulham and found it a bit shit really....
BlowDryRat · 15/05/2021 22:42

Harpenden. I went to a baby group there once as a relatively young mum. I have never felt so judged and sneered at in my life.

Grin at Luton being snobby.

Scottishskifun · 15/05/2021 22:43

😂 Anywhere with a waitrose!
Although I'm probably just jealous that our closest waitrose is over 2 hours away!

EastWestWhosBest · 15/05/2021 22:43

@Beemail1

oh we're defintely better than jaywick

Can anyone tell me more about Jaywick?

Jaywick is a town on the Essex coast. It was built as a holiday resort and nearly all the houses are like holiday chalets. Lots of people from London bought plots of land there and built the chalets themselves as holiday homes in the 30s and ended up moving to them to get out of London during the war. The problem is that the houses were never meant to be lived in permanently. The roads were not properly built. There is little there in the way of work and it is the most deprived area in England.
RisingSunn · 15/05/2021 22:43

Luton??!
