Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

Bath, pockets of St Albans and Edinburgh and some neighbourhoods in Maida Vale and Hampstead can be very snooty. It is usually those whose slightly deeper pockets can't mask the sheer shallowness of character and lack of inherent sophistication Wink.
I love a proper snobby encounter, they're very amusing as the person's perceived superiority is so ridiculously undermined by their ostentatious lack of self awareness Grin.

Buckshaw "village" in Chorley.... it's a giant new build estate

Miljea · 15/05/2021 22:22

@tentosix

winchester. horrible place.

I'd not say'horrible' but Winchester is a prime example of what happens when 'ordinary' cash buys London property 25-35 years ago.

Some of those have now capitalised on their extreme good fortune to cash up and buy 1 hour out of London.

Hence Winchester.

It does have a lot of London cash, and thus a fair number of people who'd've otherwise been 'normal' but who now think they're a bit better, with their London cash (often with him still commuting, pre-Covid).

So there is a lot of pretension in Winchester.

Oxford is just incredibly expensive. The cost of an average house in ratio to the average wage is way out of most peoples reach. Areas of North Oxford are so expensive, only very wealthy people can afford to live there, so the area becomes posh. I wouldn't call it snobby though.

And there are so many students and tourists (normally) it can't possibly be regarded as snobby!

Salcombe
Sandringham
Woking
Guildford
Weybridge

I was a very working class student at Edinburgh University. THE snobbiest environment I’ve ever been in my life

Rosehip10 · 15/05/2021 22:23

Clifton in Bristol.

My every day school run at at private school when we’re from a council estate Grin
ALittleBitOfThisAndThat · 15/05/2021 22:24

@plominoagain - most of Norwich isn’t like that though, just the Tory dominated council. I’ve never really found it to be a snobby place, maybe a few people are but you get that in West Norfolk too, e.g. in Shouldham.

ImAncient · 15/05/2021 22:24

I’m proper laughing at some of these. A friend is from a landed (?) family.

Anyway at our little village school there was a mum ‘M’ completely up her self. My friend drives a very old beaten up car & dresses as more proper shabby. ‘M’ makes a couple of comments saying how people like my friend let the school down. Friends Dh is a Mr. Friend is known as Mrs but Friend’s mum is ‘Lady X’ & was visiting. M hears teacher saying nice to see you Lady X .., cue M practically choking. Hilarious!! I’m not saying where but our local town has been mentioned!

@m0therofdragons

Sherborne in Dorset. I do like it there but it’s very snobby - outrage over proposed Tesco... Waitrose was obviously fine and much more Sherborne. They seem in denial that poor people live there too!
Remember the proper snobs pronounce it Shubun where as the local people call it shurborne.

Has to be my road , well my neighbour seems to think so we are not posh enough for her to speak to us

Auntpodder · 15/05/2021 22:27

St Andrews. I'm very fond of it, but really, with intellectual snobbery from the university, the ridiculous house prices, all the gaming millionaires from Dundee and a drop-dead gorgeous location, it has onion-layer levels of snobbery...

Oh yes. There is a world of difference between being rich or well-to-do and being snobby. Hyacinth Bucket was snobby. All the Lords and Ladies I've ever known have been very down to earth.

Anyway, Guildford. Cunts to a man.

Hyacinth88 · 15/05/2021 22:28

Aunt plodder I agree. My daughter rhas just turned down an unconditional place at St Andrews uni due to the culture there.

Used to be good charity shops and lovely , homely cafes.

ye Gods! its hideous now.

@joystir59

South cliff.in Scarborough. Very snobby but crumbling into the sea. I live in an old fishing family's cottage across the bay in the original Old Town with the local drug dealers, but at least it's built on the rocky headland and will survive down the ages. Grin
Not including The Ramshill in there I hope.
FedNlanders · 15/05/2021 22:28

Lymington
Woodbridge

Chicchicchicchiclana · 15/05/2021 22:29

Tunbridge Wells, Guildford, Dartmouth - all the most expensive places really.

sadperson16 · 15/05/2021 22:30

Your daughter turned down a place due tio an undertone of snobbery?

Er, no

CatrinVennastin · 15/05/2021 22:30

Troon - Idenitkit bungalows and over manicured lawns.
Newton Mearns - I lived there as a teen and god it was so snobby and unwelcoming and racist.

IndigoC · 15/05/2021 22:30

Beaconsfield is awful. We lived in Seer Green, a village close to it, for a while. The local Waitrose was a nightmare, got used to being shoulder-charged by nasty women in posh coats.
