If you can push your budget up, this is a beauty in Monton. There's a golf course behind it and you walk across it to Worsley and go and nosey at Ryan Giggs' big house

Holz11 · 15/05/2021 19:07

Ok great thank you @MotherOfGodWeeFella I definitely will have a look

Wow that is beautiful

It's the old St Paul's vicarage which has been split into two duplex apartments so it'll feel like a house. It's walking distance to schools, cafes, restaurants, etc.

MangosteenSoda · 15/05/2021 20:36

Tbf, the houses mentioned within budget are also walking distance to Monton (and house 1 is across the road from a restaurant Grin).

The 3 houses I linked to seemed to be the three best currently on Rightmove in Swinton. I chose Swinton because it’s the cheapest of the areas mentioned in my pp, so that’s a kind of benchmark to what’s available.

I like house 1 because it’s big and it has a nice garden. It is right near the A580; separated by a restaurant and a car park. However, it’s a nice quiet road and the carpark is nicely screened. The garden is on the side away from all that (west facing), and I think would be quiet. After that, house 3 is my next fave because of proximity to nice primary and it’s in a nice spot.

Another pp linked to a house in Monton, closer to the hospital. Also very nice.

I think you really need to visit and look around. There’s no point exhausting yourself trying to find the very ‘nicest’ location because that’s probably going to lack a garden or another of your non negotiables.

I live about halfway between houses 1 and 3 that I linked to. I’d say anywhere on that stretch and round and about that area are alright places to live. £1200 budget goes further here than in Didsbury/Chorlton, but I don’t know if looking at Worsley, Ellenbrook etc will help much. The prices are higher than the linked examples and travel distance is further.

I’m also really interested to see from this thread that so many MNetters must live in a fairly small radius to me Grin

Quite a long walk from Ringlow Pk Rd to Monton though with kids in tow! No need to walk along busy roads though for much of the way.

Devlesko · 15/05/2021 21:39

If it's just renting for a while look at Atherton and Walkden too.
You may not want to live here for ever as not close to countryside.

A bit further out but the area of Pennington in Leigh is sought after, and Penny flash is a lovely country park. There are a few in this area actually.

Flaxmeadow · 16/05/2021 01:22

I would like more country village feel as some of you have mentioned which I like the sound of I am coming from london at the moment where I commute an hour and half preferably don’t want that long but I want somewhere outside of Manchester city itself I can drive to work if I have to or drive to a station to make my commute easier

The problem is that any commute between Warrington to Manchester to Leeds has overcrowded rail and road networks. The M62 and its tributary motorways, are some of the busiest road networks in Europe.
It's like London but a different shape. Instead of being a big circle, it's an east / west line of urbanisation along the M62, made up of many large post industrial towns in both GM and WY.

People commute from Leeds to Manchester and vice versa, and all the towns in between. As others have said, its chocka at peak times and so are the trains. To live in a village, and there aren't many villages, you have the same commute problem as getting into central London

Flaxmeadow · 16/05/2021 01:27

...some of the old mining towns are a bit villagey. But there weren't many in Manchester (city). They were more near Warrington. St Helens kind of areas

I would avoid the large old mill towns. I hate to say that, and they used to be OK but not so much now

Holz11 · 16/05/2021 06:22

Ok great thank you

If you want villagey then look to the south east and the places along the Manchester to Buxton train line. We live near New Mills on the edge of the Peak District. Many of the towns and villages were once industrial and are surrounded by stunning countryside. Off peak it would take around 40 minutes to get to the hospital from here and the new A555 airport relief road has made getting to the M60 much easier as we no longer have to drive to Stockport.

stressfuljune · 16/05/2021 08:26

1.5 hours isn't a common commute for anyone I know living in Manchester. Most opt to live near work and commute 30-60min top. Quality of life.. but there is stunning countryside in any direction 30 min from Manchester for time off. But still have access to all the ups sides of the city.. if you driving stay on same side of the city..

stressfuljune · 16/05/2021 08:28

*driving 30 mins out of the M60 out of peak times is very different to inbound on a work day...

Jahebejrjr · 16/05/2021 08:42

Hi OP. If you want a more rural feel I would recommend looking at Culcheth/Glazebury. The secondary school Culcheth High is very good.

Holz11 · 16/05/2021 09:15

Ok great thank you

TheOnlyMrsW · 16/05/2021 09:21

OP if you want rural but good transport links Rossendale is a good bet, in pre-pandemic times I used to drive to Salford Quays and it's about an hour on good days, if you're not travelling at rush hour for shifts would be less.
Lots of good primary and secondary schools, gorgeous walks, lots of activities for kids and Rawtenstall itself has a real buzz about it. Good independent shops and restaurants, decent hospitals nearby in Burnley and Blackburn, and a bus service into the city centre if you want.
If you're looking at housing, put BB4 as a postcode search into Rightmove and feel free to pm me if you've got questions Smile

Holz11 · 16/05/2021 09:45

Ok thank you so much I definitely won’t be driving in Peak hours so it won’t be to bad and we have family around that area and Sheffield so would like to be close as this is the reason why we are moving up that way
