@Flaxmeadow I'm not from Wigan, grew up in Monton, now live within Wigan boundary but my address is road name, town name, Manchester. I live in Manchester.
We may have gone to the same school or sixth form college.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:32

Your previous post makes no sense. Not that any of this is any help to the OP

Why?

Some people in West Yorkshire (Todmorden to be more specific) have an Oldham postcode. That was my whole point. Its confusing.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:35

But you said some people in West Yorkshire had a Manchester postcode (Oldham). Oldham has its own postcode. That's why it made no sense.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:40

But you said some people in West Yorkshire had a Manchester postcode (Oldham). Oldham has its own postcode. That's why it made no sense.

No I said some people in West Yorkshire have a Greater Manchester postcode

Manchester is a city
Greater Manchester is a county.

Oldham is in the county of Greater Manchester. Todmorden is in the county of West Yorkshire but has a Grt Man county postcode

Any road, just trying to explain to the OP the difference between the county and the city

stressfuljune · 14/05/2021 23:44

Monton. Close and nice.
Didsbury and surrounding areas are fab places. Excellent schools (all) and plenty will have spaces as it's quite transient. Loads to do.
Loads of people who work at Salford Royal live Didsbury / Withington / Chorlton etc.

Byllis · 14/05/2021 23:44

It would be helpful if op could give some more detail on what they’re looking for and why Radcliffe and Warrington have been identified as possibilities. As always on these threads, altrincham and didsbury have been mentioned, but the difference in prices between those areas and Warrington is huge.

I have an M postcode, but don’t live in the city of Manchester. If I’m talking to someone local, I’ll say I live in Urmston (I don’t, but you get the idea) and if not I say Manchester. There was a boo-ha on next door when a new arrival said they were happy to move to Town, Manchester, and someone leapt in to say it was absolutely incorrect to say Manchester and that if they put it in their address they’d never get their post. Totally wrong as I get letters using Lancashire, Cheshire, Manchester and greater Manchester. Some letters even say Manchester, Greater Manchester just to be really sure!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:45

My bad - the thing is, no one really says they're from Greater Manchester one - they just say Manchester. You don't need to explain it to me, I misread your post. I was born when it was all Lancashire.

TooMinty · 14/05/2021 23:48

Saddleworth is lovely but a long way out of Manchester and a long way from Salford. I have also lived in Failsworth which is near Oldham but on the Manchester side. But if you are working in Salford a bit of a trek.

Fixitup2 · 14/05/2021 23:51

Chorlton and Didsbury are quite expensive compared to many areas and they’re quite urban and cramped. There are imo nicer areas where you get more for your money and much clearer air near the countryside.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:52

...I was born when it was all Lancashire

Hah yes! This is the thing isn't it, especially with those, like me, who remember the border changes, Met county creations, and all the uproar back then. My relatives in Wigan and St Helens still haven't got over it Grin

Greater Manchester should really have been called East Lancashire, and Merseyside called West Lancashire. Would have saved a lot of confusion!

Fixitup2 · 14/05/2021 23:52

I also say I’m from Manchester, I’m not it’s Greater Manchester but easier to say Manchester.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:56

According to an article in the MEN I read recently, Didsbury is the most sought after place in the UK for househunters. I'd avoid as it was already very expensive, but prices will be through the roof there now if this true.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:56

and in 10 years time, Todmorden will probably be called Leeds Grin

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:58

That's if it's not been abandoned due to flooding Shock

Flaxmeadow · 15/05/2021 00:02

Yes flooding, and those parts across the Pennine 'bandit country' border land too. Littleborough and so on

Anywhere around those hilly places, WY and GM, is increasingly a flooding risk.

stressfuljune · 15/05/2021 00:02

Didsbury has always been in that type of article & quite expensive..but it has everything and not all parts are cramped. Easy plentiful transport links to airport, teams, trains, cycle routes etc. Nightlife, tons sports clubs, entertainment complex etc
Close to all hospitals & uni.
That's why it's expensive.

Byllis · 15/05/2021 00:03

@MotherOfGodWeeFella - last time we moved we viewed a few houses in Didsbury, and the options were very disappointing compared to decent areas a couple of miles away. We’re thinking of moving again, and I can’t even see anything to view this time around.

You pay a huge premium to be able to walk to the admittedly nice centre, and I can’t justify it when I can still get there conveniently by tram, car or even walking.

buttons766 · 15/05/2021 00:03

Ainsworth, Hawkshaw, Greenmount are lovely
Depending on budget (lower end) try Edenfield, Rawtenstall
Might be too far, otherwise Prestwich and Whitefield are closer to Manchester, wouldn't really recommend Radcliffe

Kubby123 · 15/05/2021 00:03

I live in Whitefield, just on the boarder of Radcliffe. Love Whitefield but house prices are going up at a ridiculous rate at the minute. All three kids go to school in Whitefield and never have any issues. Lots of football, netball and Basketball teams in the area if your kids are into sports and the tram makes it easier to get into Manchester or Bury. Few nice restaurants. Close to Prestwich which feels like it's trying to be like Didsbury. Some parts of Radcliffe sadly aren't that great imo.

Lettitbee · 15/05/2021 00:25

If you are looking for a good primary school, this house is near enough to Chorlton Park to probably get yourselves near the top of the waiting list for the Chorlton Park primary school:
www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/106909952#/

There isn't much around Chorlton in that price range, maybe better to look nearer Old Trafford.

Holz11 · 15/05/2021 06:30

Ok great thank you very much so helpful definitely going to look at these areas next week to get a feel need somewhere soon as need to start applying for schools

I would like more country village feel as some of you have mentioned which I like the sound of I am coming from london at the moment where I commute an hour and half preferably don’t want that long but I want somewhere outside of Manchester city itself I can drive to work if I have to or drive to a station to make my commute easier

OP posts:
Holz11 · 15/05/2021 07:01

That sounds lovely and more what we want

OP posts:
MotherOfGodWeeFella · 15/05/2021 07:27

Public transport is not as plentiful or joined up as in London so what is feasible there could be a nightmare up here. While it's not London traffic, the main roads and M60 and M602 are extremely busy at peak times.

Fishlegs · 15/05/2021 07:43

I work at Salford Royal and live in Stretford. It’s a 15 minute drive or a 20 min easy cycle through Trafford Park, with barely any road cycling. We moved from Chorlton fairly recently and it’s really similar, but without the huge house prices.

Plenty of people I work with live more rurally, but they also have a really long drive to get in and out, especially if they’re working 9-5. The shift workers (nurses, ED etc) don’t do too badly as they can dodge the worst of the traffic.
