Moving to Manchester

Hi we are looking at houses around Warrington and Radcliffe any ideas if these areas are nice for families please

OP posts:
Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 22:41

Radcliffe is very much in Greater Manchester.

It's in the county of Greater Manchester, but it isn't in Manchester the city

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:43

It's a darn site closer than some of the other areas mentioned. The OP's workplace is in Salford, not Manchester.

CrumbleLady · 14/05/2021 22:44

I agree with the others who say commuting by car from Warrington to Salford will take a fair while in peak traffic.
Trains to central Manchester are good from central Warrington, Birchwood, Urmston etc but it’s a pain to get to Salford.

Much better to look at Worsley and areas along the A580.
Sale is nice too.

Corrag · 14/05/2021 22:50

@Flaxmeadow most of the places mentioned are not in the city of Manchester, including the place OP will be working at. What's your point?

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 22:53

The OP says she wants to move to Manchester and she is interested in Warrington and Radcliffe. I was saying they are not in Manchester

lastqueenofscotland · 14/05/2021 22:54

Saddleworth to salford would be dreadful.
Are you keen on being very far out, do you need to drive for your commute? If it’s on public transport the links to Ellesmere park aren’t great and will really limit you to the pretty immediate area.

Corrag · 14/05/2021 22:58

@Flaxmeadow nitpicking doesn't really add anything to the discussion.

I live in Greater Manchester, not in the city of Manchester. I have a Manchester post code. If people ask where I'm from I say Manchester. Does it really matter? Do I need to be more specific?

lastqueenofscotland · 14/05/2021 22:59

Also the vast majority of Oldham is really pretty grim.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:01

@Corrag - sounds familiar. I'm from the area the OP will be working in. I always say I'm from Manchester Grin

Fixitup2 · 14/05/2021 23:06

Agree that Stratford is nice, I know a few hospital workers living there. I used to drive to Salford Royal from Tottington in Bury.
Have you looked at north Bolton? Bromley cross is on a train line to Salford/Manchester and same for Horwich. Both better areas than Radcliffe. Or some bury villages are nice then you could drive to Radcliffe tram station. Ainsworth for example isn’t far and nice with a good primary I believe and nice park, pubs, restaurants etc.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:07

It isn't nit picking
Manchester is a city. Greater Manchester is a county.
I'm trying to explain that to the OP. It kind of helps to know the difference if you're moving here

I live in Greater Manchester, not in the city of Manchester. I have a Manchester post code. If people ask where I'm from I say Manchester. Does it really matter? Do I need to be more specific

People in Bury, Wigan, Bolton, Rochdale and Oldham live in Greater Manchester. It doesnt mean they live in the city. They are towns in their own right.

Warrington is in a different county altogether

Fixitup2 · 14/05/2021 23:09

Ramsbottom is lovely by the way, also holcombe brook, Tottington and greenmount. Nice areas of Bolton are Bromley across (train station), Egerton, Sharples, Harwood, Bradshaw, Lostock, Horwich is ok mainly too, Westhoughton has nice bits but not nice bits. Whitefield and Prestwich nice.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/05/2021 23:12

I have a friend who commutes daily from Saddleworth to Salford. It’s fine.

And bloody fabulous when you get home.

Corrag · 14/05/2021 23:15

I'm aware of that. I live within the boundaries of Wigan, I have a Wigan tel no and a Manchester post code.

If @MotherOfGodWeeFella lives near Salford Royal/Ellesmere Park she may well be in Salford 6. But she'll have a Manchester tel no and postcode. We're both still from Manchester.

Fixitup2 · 14/05/2021 23:17

Agree, you’re best commuting and living in one of the lovely places on the outskirts. So much countryside around and real community feels. Love living in Greater Manchester
Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:17

Saddleworth is alright. Oldham and Rochdale can be a bit grim but the outskirts aren't too bad

If you're working in Salford you have a lot of nice areas to the south.

OP. Are you wanting a city living (Manchester and Salford) or more a town or suburbs or edge of the countryside kind of place?

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:22

I don't want to specify where I'm from, but I agree with you @Corrag. I no longer live in the area but have family there. We are in north Derbyshire - I wouldn't want to commute to Salford Royal from here.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:24

I'm aware of that. I live within the boundaries of Wigan, I have a Wigan tel no and a Manchester post code.

I know people living in West Yorkshire with a Greater Manchester postcode (Oldham). Odd isn't it?
But I've never heard anyone from Wigan say they're from Manchester.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:25

If I worked in Manchester city centre I'd be fine commuting - it's going through the city centre then out to Salford that's awkward unless there's a direct route. In normal non Covid times traffic is very heavy at peak times.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:26

Oldham isn't in West Yorkshire?

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 23:27

Oldham isn't in West Yorkshire?

Yes I know, that's why i pointed it out as confusing

Corrag · 14/05/2021 23:28

@Flaxmeadow I'm not from Wigan, grew up in Monton, now live within Wigan boundary but my address is road name, town name, Manchester. I live in Manchester.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 23:29

Your previous post makes no sense. Not that any of this is any help to the OP.
WutheringTights · 14/05/2021 23:30

I live in Didsbury, 4.5 miles from the city centre wind easily commutable by bike (good cycle paths), bus or tram. Lovely village feel, lots of independent cafes, shops etc and good schools. Lots of doctors and nurses live here as it's very easily commutable for a number of major hospitals in the area. Most of the kids at my kids' school seem to be the children of doctors. Lots of well run activities for children too, almost too many.

Sorry. I thought you said you lived in Wigan
