I had suggested Whitefield but if you don't need to be close to Radcliffe then Prestwich is ace (I live there).
South Manchester (Didsbury and Chorlton) can be fab, but are much pricier.

highlandcoo · 14/05/2021 20:37

Have you considered living in Manchester itself OP?

Holz11 · 14/05/2021 20:38

Ok thank you someone recommended rossendale worried that this is a bit to far out for commute

No Radcliffe just had a few houses we were looking at really just want to be near nice schools for the kids and somewhere within my budget with a nice back garden I will be working in Salford

I agree with gobby about Didsbury and Chorlton, and Heaton Moor, just into Stockport, is also worth thinking about.

gobbynorthernbird · 14/05/2021 20:40

Where in Salford, OP?

happytoday73 · 14/05/2021 20:41

I'd discount Radcliffe.... Lots of better areas at similar prices

gobbynorthernbird · 14/05/2021 20:41

Ooh, yeah. Marple too going out that way, but I have no idea about prices there.
Holz11 · 14/05/2021 20:42

Ok thank you it’s west Manchester city

OP posts:
gobbynorthernbird · 14/05/2021 20:42

Or even New Mills or Mossley/Diggle way. All on a reasonable train line and a bit more of a villagey vibe.

gobbynorthernbird · 14/05/2021 20:44

I have no idea what area west Manchester City is

highlandcoo · 14/05/2021 20:45

If working in Salford I would think about Altrincham - I think the tram link is good. Great indoor market and good places to eat.
State schools are still grammar with entrance exams (competitive!) if that appeals.

Holz11 · 14/05/2021 20:48

Sorry near elleesmere park

OP posts:
gobbynorthernbird · 14/05/2021 20:51

In which case somewhere like Worsley would probably be much better

Holz11 · 14/05/2021 20:55

Ok thank you

I live in Radcliffe, on the border with Whitefield. Radcliffe is a cheap place to live - for a reason! I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near the Met in Radcliffe - its a bit grotty. If you're going to be working in Salford, you need to be within walking distance of the Tram. (Called the Met round here). So, I’d say Whitefield, Besses O’th Barn, Heaton Park or Prestwich. Anywhere within walking distance of the Met will add £££ on the cost of your rent / mortgage.
Of all those areas, Prestwich is by far the most expensive. Look at the prices to buy on Rightmove and add at least 10% to secure a property! What would your budget be to buy, and how many bedrooms do you need?

jackieandtheweaver · 14/05/2021 20:58

I live in Ramsbottom and I absolutely love it! Lived in Didsbury for 5 years before I moved here and it is amazing but exceptionally pricey. Ramsbottom has great schools, lovely shops and incredible countryside. Transport links aren't the best, there are buses into Manchester City centre that take around an hour or you could get the tram from bury or radcliffe (we used to go from Radcliffe as the car park is much bigger) or you could always drive in. Driving into the centre takes around 30 mins not in rush hour but about 45 mins in rush hour. Ramsbottom is a lovely lovely place!

Ok great thank you very much this is really helpful

Was also going to suggest Worsley or Swinton. Worsley very affluent, Swinton has pockets. Issue with Salford is the secondary schools, but you’ll find that all over greater Manchester, unless you move to Sale or Altrincham.

Prestwich very nice, independent as someone else mentioned. You fall under Bury for schools and they’re slightly better than Manchester.

Be mindful of the traffic - I assume you’re at the Hospital or school? If so it can be pretty busy around there.

Best bet to rent, definitely, and then decide where suits you and your family best.

gobbynorthernbird · 14/05/2021 21:13

Bear in mind, OP, if you're planning on using public transport then to get to eg Salford Royal you're probably going to have to go in to the city centre, change, then come back out.

Holz11 · 14/05/2021 21:14

Ok great yeah we definitely planning on renting first before we buy as we don’t no the areas. We were hoping to be definitely in greater Manchester area as kids like the space

OP posts:
Holz11 · 14/05/2021 21:16

Think it might be easier to drive maybe but not sure yet I’m at a hospital

Corrag · 14/05/2021 21:18

If you'll be working near Ellesmere Park you could consider Monton. Or rent in EP itself.

lastqueenofscotland · 14/05/2021 21:20

Radcliffe is really not nice.
I had a friend who lived in Warrington and commuted to Manchester; If United were at home on a weekday evening it would take them two hours to get home.

If your working in Elmsmere park I would be looking at Worsley or Monton myself. Both nice areas with lots of green space.
