Hi we are looking at houses around Warrington and Radcliffe any ideas if these areas are nice for families please

When are you moving OP?
Renting is a good idea except that ideally you don’t want to move schools twice. We rented then ended up buying in a different area and moving DD after one year. She was fine in fact but I wouldn’t have chosen to do that ideally.
If you’re not moving till autumn any chance of coming up for a week or two and having a good look round?

CatsForLife · 14/05/2021 21:25

Radcliffe... out of all the places in Greater Manchester it’s pretty high on the list of grim places to live

Holz11 · 14/05/2021 21:32

My husband is going to come up next week and have a good look around we are planning on moving in July to start the new school year in a new place

Monton, Ellesmere park, Worsley some parts of Swinton are all nice and a good area for where you want to be. I wouldn't go too far away from those areas unless you really like queuing in traffic going in!

doodleygirl · 14/05/2021 21:45

According to Right Move stats published today, top five areas to live in Manchester are Didsbury, Chorlton. Prestwich, Heaton Moor and Bramhall.

nattynoonoo821 · 14/05/2021 21:45

Stretford is great. Lots of investment going on. Trafford so great schools not quite crazy housing prices yet (but rising)

All of which would be a crappy commute to Ellesmere Park.

Ok great thank you

What would the commute be like from saddleworth or Oldham

Just remember that if you want a school place for September you’d struggle in the better areas as the schools tend to be over subscribed. If you’re looking for a reception place you’ll have more choice as the birth rate for this years intake is low.

To Salford it would be long!

Bloody awful
MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:11

Sounds as though you're going to be working at Salford Royal. In which case, look at Ellesmere Park, Monton, south Swinton (it's what estate agents call it), Worsley and Ellenbrook. Perfectly good areas. Much of Salford 6 is also fine.

Corrag · 14/05/2021 22:15

@MotherOfGodWeeFella which part do they class as South Swinton then? Everything south of the East Lancs?

Yes. The bits closest to Worsley pretty much.

mynameisigglepiggle · 14/05/2021 22:21

@Holz11
Rossendale is commutable to Manchester especially at the moment.
In "normal" times probably about an hour. Only problem is if there's an accident but that's the same anywhere.
Great bus service too.
Wider choice of high school than ramsbottom too.

LongIslandIcedT · 14/05/2021 22:22

I'd echo Worsley or Monton. Warrington is a bastard to travel to Manchester, it can take hours in the car if there's problems on the A57 or M62 or M60. There's only 1 train station in the centre of town with no decent parking, the other station you could get is Birchwood or Newton Le Willows. I'd recommend being closer to Manchester itself.

It’s not a commute I’d choose tbh, are you more keen on being out of Manchester? Most of the places you’re suggesting are quite far out & your commute would be pretty long.

I’d recommend Monton, Prestwich, Whitefield, Worsley to rent and once you’re here you’ll be able to get a better feel.

I wouldn’t want to commute from Warrington or Saddleworth and Radcliffe wouldn’t be on a list of areas I’d recommend.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:24

Correction: they call it Swinton south.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:26

I wouldn't dismiss the rest of Swinton but you'd need to look yourself and see what you thought of it.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:28

Rossendale to Salford Royal would be a bloody awful commute. To Manchester city centre, maybe doable, but out to Salford? Nah.

Flaxmeadow · 14/05/2021 22:34

Warrington, arguably Radcliffe too, is not in Manchester

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:37

Radcliffe is very much in Greater Manchester.

PunkAssMoFo · 14/05/2021 22:38

Many of my hospital colleagues with families that are buying in stretford as it’s still in Trafford for schools, but more affordable. It’s also on tram & train line.

Depending on budget, Lymm & surrounding areas may be worth a look. Worsley is also lovely.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/05/2021 22:40

this is in a great location in Monton. Tiny garden, but great for public transport and walkable, if you like walking, to the hospital.
