If you cook pesto with pasta do you use a whole jar?

Is this where I'm going wrong as I've only ever used a scoop from the jar yet see many suggestions to use a jar??

I tend to use half a jar, it'll depend how much pasta you use.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 08/05/2021 21:26

Depends how much pasta you cook surely? I cooked pasta for 2 teens tonight (which probably could have fed 3) and used about 2/3 of a jar of pesto.

Horehound · 08/05/2021 21:26

I use a jar because I love pesto. But I suppose it depends how much pasta you're cooking!

No. A few teaspoons.

MySocalledLoaf · 08/05/2021 21:28

Whole jar. They are tiny!

WhereTheWildlingsLive · 08/05/2021 21:28

All personal taste IMO - I use about 1/3 - 1/2 jar but add extra olive oil, oh uses the whole jar and ruins it 🤷‍♀️ The kids prefer his way tbh!

Sparticle · 08/05/2021 21:29

We serve the pasta and let everyone add however much they want. We’d never use a jar in one go even between two adults, two children. Personally I probably add no more than a heaped dessert spoon.

BasinHaircut · 08/05/2021 21:29

I only use about a teaspoon per person. Any more would be too much for me!

Honeyroar · 08/05/2021 21:29

God yes.

Catslovepies · 08/05/2021 21:30

Sorry to be "that poster" but I make my own pesto using basil from the greenhouse rather than using jars. It's easy and the pesto tastes better as it's nice and fresh. I make and use about a jar's worth though for two admittedly greedy people.

Camomila · 08/05/2021 21:31

I cook for 4 (2 adults, 2 children) and use half a jar of pesto and a big spoonful of cream cheese to make it creamier/less salty.

Haha yes obviously it's nicer freshly made but that wasn't the question!
Frenchfancy · 08/05/2021 21:34

1 jar of pesto does 3-4 in our household. A teaspoon is merely a snack for the chef!

CMOTDibbler · 08/05/2021 21:35

No, about a large teaspoon per person. And as I never use a jar up before it goes mouldy, I freeze it in an ice cube tray so I can just pop one in as needed

thenightsky · 08/05/2021 21:37

Half a jar between 3 of us. Then freeze the other half, as it goes off in the fridge within days.

OverTheRubicon · 08/05/2021 21:37

Half a jar or a bit less here for 1-2 adults and 3 younger DCs, it's really salty and oily otherwise. I do make sure the pasta isn't 100% drained to there's some extra liquid, and I've usually got some tomatoes or other veg in there too to provide some extra, plus usually do it with gnocchi so have lots of heft already.

Undersnatch · 08/05/2021 21:38

Yes I’m now that poster too as I actually couldn’t enjoy a jar of pesto since I learned to make my own. So easy and yum.

Pinkpaisley · 08/05/2021 21:40

Yes I use the whole jar. We like a really strong flavor.

MargaretFraggle · 08/05/2021 21:41

I use almost a whole jar. I put the rest in the fridge and put it in tomato sauces or spread it on crackers. Yum.

RandomUsernameHere · 08/05/2021 21:45

Surely it depends entirely on how much pasta you're cooking? I wouldn't use a whole jar unless cooking a lot, it keeps fine in the fridge once open.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 08/05/2021 21:46

I'm lactose intolerant so I make my own with nutritional yeast and nuts but anything goes - spinach, coriander, cashews, walnuts - and use a lot.

hehehe- I agree!

It surely depends on how much pasta you cook and how large your pesto jar is? Normally, they are tiny and as a minimum I'd use 1/2 jar, but if its still too bland, would add the other half.

I've also used it spread thinly on a baguette (or bake at home baguette) as an alternate to garlic bread.

I hate finding the leftover pesto is mouldy, so usually try using it up in 1 go.

safariboot · 08/05/2021 21:48

A jar does 4 portions to me.

BetterThanKleenex · 08/05/2021 21:54

A jar does 3-4 portions of pasta. DH and I have about 1tbsp each and sometimes add a little more while we're eating. If there's any leftover I top up the jar with a bit of olive oil, it keeps it fresher for longer. Or I freeze it in a small box, it doesn't change the flavour but prevents mould and waste!

HowWeAre · 08/05/2021 21:55

If I didn’t calorie count I would happily use a whole jar but I do so a few spoons does us.
