If you cook pesto with pasta do you use a whole jar?

Is this where I'm going wrong as I've only ever used a scoop from the jar yet see many suggestions to use a jar??

No way. It's not far off 1,000 calories a jar

Cocksinsocks · 08/05/2021 21:56

Also that's too much anyway. A spoon per person is fine. Desert spoon type amount

BowserJr · 08/05/2021 21:59

I do have to laugh at 'those' posters. Pesto and pasta is a cheap and easy tea for us. I'm not spending the time nor money on pissing about making my own pesto.

Whole jar but save some of combined pesto n pasta for another meal. I've learnt that saving part of a jar of pesto just results in it malingering in the fridge til it gets chucked out.

Changechangychange · 08/05/2021 22:02

Half a jar for 4 servings. With a splash of balsamic. DH would just use a teaspoonful though, he seems to think it is a condiment not a sauce!

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 22:03

I use it thus:

A dollop on top of bruschetta
Smear a layer on the base of a Pyrex dish, add pasta/veggies then pour over cheese sauce and bake.

ginswinger · 08/05/2021 22:07

I make my own, I even grow most of the ingredients too... It just tastes really nice.....

AlexaNeverListens · 08/05/2021 22:08

3-4 portions = 1 jar for us

drspouse · 08/05/2021 22:09

I use half a jar and then mark the date opened on the jar with a Sharpie.

Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan · 08/05/2021 22:09

You can buy jars of pesto?

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 08/05/2021 22:10

@Cocksinsocks but that's only 250 cals per person. I know you've pasta too but if it's a main meal that would be ok wouldn't it?

PurpleSproutingSomething · 08/05/2021 22:12

It's a quick and easy tea for my DS, he just has a tsp mixed with pasta.

We do the same.

Love pesto here! Mix it with couscous and put it in peppers before baking. Delicious! Mix it with pasta and serve with roasted vegetables.

I’ll have to stop thinking about it because it’s making me hungry.

It's not very cheap, though, for those tiny jars and especially if you can't take cheese and have to buy a vegan one. Hmm

It's hardly pissing about, a bunch of spinach, olive oil, nooch, nuts, garlic, pepper, a bit of salt, lemon juice in a food processor.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 08/05/2021 22:26

@osbertthesyrianhamster

That’s a huge amount of faff for me and I don’t have half of those ingredients just in so buying the jar is cheaper and easier for us. We’re not vegan either or gluten/lactose free.

Okay, so for you it's a faff. For others it's not at all and definitely not cheaper.

I am admittedly watching my diet but I'd rather have 50/100 cals of pesto and use the rest for something more notionally beneficial, even if just chicken for the protein.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 08/05/2021 22:41

A teaspoon does 4 here, so about 6 servings a jar... depending on brand the salt in a jar can be pretty high!

A teaspoon does 4? I'm not a big eater so feel a lot stingier than most pps, but that really is very small.

What else do you put on? Or are you one of the MN ladies who can make a roast chicken feed a family for a week?

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/05/2021 22:57

I use about half a jar, just for me, and always add cream too, with bacon and olives.
Its an old favourite.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/05/2021 23:01

Christ alive, I dont care how many calories are in it and I don't find it expensive.
I have made my own, I could do so again if I wanted to but quite frankly, I can't be bothered.
The MN food weirdos are here again.

Agreed, if we have pasta & pesto that’s the whole dinner so I’ve never thought about the calories or salt, and I can’t be arsed faffing about making pesto, that would completely defeat the object of it being a quick easy meal.

Op starts thread about pesto and people reply with their thoughts on pesto. WEIRDOS Hmm
MajesticWhine · 08/05/2021 23:09

Just a teaspoon per person for me. It's a bit too strong for chucking in the whole jar. A fresh one, I would use more.
