Is this where I'm going wrong as I've only ever used a scoop from the jar yet see many suggestions to use a jar??

One jar of veggie pesto is enough for three portions here.

Yes home made is nice, but pinenuts are so expensive it is much cheaper to buy it, even if you go for branded rather than supermarket own brand.

@Wroxie

Pesto from a jar is repulsive and sad and it takes literally five minutes to make. Big bunch of basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmigiano, olive oil, food processor, you're done before the pasta's even got started and you can use what's left for the next few days. If you want to make it even better take an extra five minutes and use a mortar and pestle.
We know! Jeez
Wroxie · 09/05/2021 20:25

@Sn0tnose I started to wonder what you'd use a mortar and pestle for in your outhouse but it's not taking me in a pleasant direction. What a strange thing to say.

I usually make a nice creamy pasta with pesto, creme fraiche and halloumi and then use half a jar. In a cold pasta salad I would use one jar, as we would eat it for a couple of days and I wouldn’t want it to dry out.

Fuckityfucksake · 09/05/2021 21:08

1 lidl jar red or green with enough pasta for 2 adults dinners and 1 maybe 2 small lunches for work for us both. We both like it strong so a teaspoon/tablespoon/half a jar just wouldn't fix a pesto craving.
And yes whoever said ''fuck the calories'' I stand with you!

PerpendicularVincent · 09/05/2021 22:16

I licked the lid of a jar of pesto 8 years ago and I'm still full.

Pennybubbly · 10/05/2021 07:08

Perpendicular - that made me full just reading your comment.

PerpendicularVincent · 10/05/2021 11:18

Happy to help Penny, you really shouldn't eat pesto more than once a decade Wink

@Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan

You can buy jars of pesto?
LOL
toocoldforsno · 10/05/2021 11:20

@Chamonixshoopshoop

A teaspoon does 4 here, so about 6 servings a jar... depending on brand the salt in a jar can be pretty high!
A quarter teaspoon per person....why would yuo even bother?

And have you any idea how much it would cost to buy all those ingredients as opposed to a jar from Aldi?
redcandlelight · 10/05/2021 11:33

pine nuts are expensive, but many jars contain other nuts (usually cashew) anyway.
we usually use pumkin seeds. nice flavour and a lot cheaper.

but you'd have hardly any pesto to make it even taste of anything? Assuming you have around 75g of (dry) pasta per person .. let's say you have 300g of pasta for 4 people, which will be about 600g of cooked pasta. (so around 1.5litresof pasta)

and your sharing 5ml of pesto between ONE AND HALF LITRES OF PASTA?

let's assume your teaspoon is actually 20ml... that's a 1:75 ratio of pesto:pasta

you may as well not have the pesto... Confused

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 10/05/2021 12:08

I just priced up the ingredients on the BBC food pesto recipe. £6.20 to make 250mls of pesto.
Or I could buy a jar for 80p ish. And have less washing up as well.
It's a no brainer.

For me it would also be the added cost of buying a food processor!
osbertthesyrianhamster · 10/05/2021 12:17

I use walnuts instead of pine nuts. You can make pesto with spinach, rocket, all sorts not just basil. I use nooch instead of cheese as am lactose intolerant.

Wroxie · 10/05/2021 12:27

@osbertthesyrianhamster Parmigiano Reggiano and most other hard or semi-hard aged cheeses are 100% completely lactose-free.

And I'm 100% adversely conditioned to the taste of all cheeses now. And all dairy. Nooch is also much cheaper.

Think of the calories!!! You shouldn’t have pesto for another year either after all that salt. Wink
PerpendicularVincent · 10/05/2021 14:46

I'm only having water and air

toffeebutterpopcorn · 10/05/2021 15:00

Water and air? Ooooo lookit you!

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/05/2021 15:27

Ah, but pesto is fine as it contains proooteeeen, the giver of life food, or somethingConfused
(BTW, so do chicken kebabs)

Whatwouldnanado · 10/05/2021 15:34

I suppose I use a couple of dessert spoons for four of us. Topping up the jar with olive oil stops the pesto going mouldy.

I feel fat now Grin

Seems excessive. Cut out the air. There might be dust particles in it.
