If you cook pesto with pasta do you use a whole jar?

Is this where I'm going wrong as I've only ever used a scoop from the jar yet see many suggestions to use a jar??

We either make our own or use the fresh one from Sainsbury's (usually the latter), we don't like the jar versions. We don''t stir it through but put it on the table so each person can add their own - DD prefers her pasta without. One tub (similar amount to a jar) would do about 3 servings of pasta.

lonel · 09/05/2021 14:44

I only like fresh pesto but ds only likes jar pesto - the cheaper the better! I use a whole jar for 4 people.

NowtSoQueerAsFolk · 09/05/2021 15:20

Are some people really getting offended by other people having different ideas about pesto?

I'm really hoping I'm wrong, but that's certainly how it's coming across. I stand by my username!

How much I use would depend on how I was using it, but if it was the only sauce then probably the jar for four people. Although I don't cook for four any more, and I would probably use more than a quarter than a jar for just me.

I only really like red pesto, so there!

MarjorieBouvier · 09/05/2021 15:41

I do use a whole jar, but that's for a family of 5 + lunch for me and DH the next day. So 7 portions. Probably actually 6 because the 2 youngest only have half a portion.

GlumyGloomer · 09/05/2021 15:41

We mix 1 jar with 1 tin of chopped tomatoes and a teaspoon of sugar. Half in the fridge for another meal in the next couple of days. Serves 2 adults and 2 small kids. That way you get plenty of sauce but the flavour isn't too strong.

redcandlelight · 09/05/2021 15:47

yes. the whole jar & a couple of cloves of crushed garlic.
but fresh pesto is a lot nicer!

Loubiemoo · 09/05/2021 15:49

Whole jar, but I also thin it down with some single cream. Makes the pesto less overpowering as well.

Sn0tnose · 09/05/2021 15:52

Two jars Grin Six of us eating it so a lot of pasta but yeah, one small jar is never enough.

Same here! I hate having leftover jars and sauces hanging about in the fridge because it just stays in there for ages before going in the bin, so DH does a massive batch with red pesto, chopped tomatoes, mixed beans, onion and cheese sprinkled on top and I eat it for ages.

With fried sliced mushrooms and crispy pancetta.
KatherineJaneway · 09/05/2021 15:54

Depends on:

  1. How many I am cooking for
  2. Size of jar

Give me those answers and I'll tell you how much I use

GeorgiaGirl52 · 09/05/2021 15:57

@BasinHaircut

I only use about a teaspoon per person. Any more would be too much for me!
One teaspoon per person and one more for "the pot".
NowtSoQueerAsFolk · 09/05/2021 16:37

If you say a teaspoon, are you referring to the measurement (5ml) or are you referring to grabbing a teaspoon out of the drawer and using a heaped one, so probably more like a tablespoon (15ml) in real terms?

looptheloopinahulahoop · 09/05/2021 16:45

I use about half a jar for three people.

aSofaNearYou · 09/05/2021 16:54

Jeez, I use a whole jar (if it's for a family). Scant pesto tastes really boring.

Ooh I'd forgotten about red pesto! Yum!

A jar does about 4 adult servings here.

purplecorkheart · 09/05/2021 17:13

Honestly it depends on the brand of pesto. Some I use about half a jar for 3 people. My local market has two producers who make their own Pesto. Their tubs are the same size as jars. One producers I would use two tablespoon max, the other normally the full tube. Also depends on whether I am adding something like chicken etc

ThatIsMyPotato · 09/05/2021 17:16

A table spoon or 2. A whole Jar makes me ill

ItsCokeFFS · 09/05/2021 17:25

A whole teaspoon per person?

Faints.

I use a calpol syringe and allocate 5mls per person.
Anything else would just be gluttony.

Topseyt · 09/05/2021 17:29

Well, there are generally 4 of us here, 5 if DD3 comes home from uni. So that is a fair bit of pasta and needs a whole jar.

Wroxie · 09/05/2021 18:10

Pesto from a jar is repulsive and sad and it takes literally five minutes to make. Big bunch of basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmigiano, olive oil, food processor, you're done before the pasta's even got started and you can use what's left for the next few days. If you want to make it even better take an extra five minutes and use a mortar and pestle.

Sn0tnose · 09/05/2021 18:25

Calm down Fanny Craddock. Mortar and pestle? I’m doing a bit of pasta for tea, not building an outhouse 🙄

BasinHaircut · 09/05/2021 18:52

@Sn0tnose that just made me LOL Grin

BasinHaircut · 09/05/2021 19:11

@NowtSoQueerAsFolk a teaspoon per person here and I mean a heaped teaspoon rather than a measurement per person. But my pesto pasta also has about a tablespoon of cream cheese per person to make it creamy so doesn’t need as much pesto as it might otherwise do IYSWIM?

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 09/05/2021 19:12

I normally use a whole jar for the 4 of us, it always surprises me how such a small jar can even out so well amongst the ton of pasta!
