Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

You can get them in home bargains and B&M. I send them to my best friend in Australia x

LadyAddle · 08/05/2021 17:44

Farex. Mignon morceaux. Lemon yoghurt with a layer of solid chocolate on top you had to break through. And yes to Barmouth & Abbey Crunch, had forgotten them.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 08/05/2021 17:45

TCP sweets. Bloody loved them.

Ranorman45 · 08/05/2021 17:55

Gagaandgag · 08/05/2021 17:59

Cadbury’s fuse! Why don’t they make it?!! 😭

ProfessionalWeirdo · 08/05/2021 18:05

When I was a child in the 1960s, our local bakery used to make a delicious thing called a honeybun. It was a round brioche-type dough, about 9-10 inches diameter, with a layer of honey running through the middle. I haven't seen it (or anything even remotely similar) for decades.

Nammamua · 08/05/2021 18:06

Rowntree Nutty bar (fudge and caramel with peanuts all around the outside)
Milk Tray bar (particularly the lime barrel)
Weekend chocolates (the lime one was the best)
Cadbury’s Creme bears - the same as creme eggs but easier to eat!
Finally - Terry’s All Gold chocolates (my mum’s favourites before Sainsbury’s stocked Prestat!). I loved the chatreuse cream.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 18:10

Nutty bar- is that what it was called (I always thought it looked like a poo - but hey it was chocolate and nuts, so all good)

Bilbettabloggin · 08/05/2021 18:13

From the 70’s: Honey Bear Spread in a round plastic tub with illustrations of 🐿 and 🐻 s. My brother loved the stuff. I was always a Marmite girl but secretly envied the Honey Bear Spread pot!

AliceMcK · 08/05/2021 18:14

My Dads bacon stew and my Nans home made chips, I’ve never been able to make them the same 😢

wellerhugs5 · 08/05/2021 18:19

@smogsville

Sara Lee pecan danish. Great big round pastry from the freezer section with icing all over it. You warmed it through in the oven it had loads of cinnamon it was amazing. I would never make another pudding when we have people round if I could still buy this.
These were DELICIOUS. I had forgotten all about them!
CoffeeMatchmakers · 08/05/2021 18:21

Name changed in the hope that someone somewhere someday will make them again.

Goodvibesfamily · 08/05/2021 18:21

@Yogaposer

A chocolate bar called "Secret", nobody else seems to remember it but it was absolutely heavenly. Also, Etenmanns desserts.
Yes secret chocolate bar was gorgeous!
Baxterbear · 08/05/2021 18:31

@Ilikecheeseontoast

I think they were called Minute Steaks... really really thin layers of frying steak (obviously processed rather than fresh off a cow). They were frozen and separated by layers off white grease proof paper. You used to chuck them in a frying pan from frozen and they'd be ready in a minute. Lovely with slices of fresh tomato between buttered white bread. My mouth is actually watering!
I bloody loved minute steak, they were delicious on toast! Omg I've just realised I miss them so much....

Knittedfairies

I've not seen an Entenmann's chocolate cake for years; not my childhood, but that of my children.

God yes. They were wonderful cakes. Wonder where they went.

I remember those too, they still make them in the USA. Also available on Amazon in some flavours.

@idontlikealdi

Oh my god Gino Ginelli!

Safeway used to do a smoked ham and chicken sandwich and it was our Saturday treat, it was so nice. I mourn it regularly.

Tandoori crisps, they were in a purple bag, can't remember the brand.

M&S Chicken tikka sandwich.

Oh the M&S chicken tikka sandwich... that was fantastic

Safeway used to do cookies absolutely covered in proper chocolate chips that were amazing

Those frozen box meals you could buy from Safeway’s that would have chicken nuggets, chips and a toy!

Mr Blobby pink lemonade

Oh the 90s🥰🥰

rozee83 · 08/05/2021 18:36

Tab clear
Liptonice in a can
Flintstones crisps that sainsburys used to sell
54321 bars

MagicSummer · 08/05/2021 18:41

Definitely Milk Tray Bar - lime barrel the best!
Weekend Assortment
Nestle Home Made Assortment in a white box with red ribbon
Fruit pastilles - boiled sweets in different flavours with a chewy centre - wrappers were white with a picture of the fruit flavour on the outside
Proper walnut whips - milk vanilla, plain vanilla and coffee milk
Good News chocolates
Sara Lee chocolate cake
Lyons orange and lemon cup cakes
McVitie's Mallows
M&S Duchesse Potatoes - such a fag to make but these were lovely
M&S Rich Pastry Turkey Pie

I vaguely remember the double-ended tins - but I think the only one I liked was chicken supreme and rice.

Glittersparkle76 · 08/05/2021 18:41

The red Cadbury boost bars,they had a coconut type filling and were divine!!

GlomOfNit · 08/05/2021 18:42

Does anyone remember the delicious M&S sausage rolls from the 80's? They were called something like 'Herby tomato lattice pork sausage rolls' and came in packs of 4. My mum would buy them sometimes and inhale them in the car home with us. Grin

Also, Rowntrees Fruit Gums before they became crap. When they were thin little rounds with 9 points on top, like crowns (and often glued onto cardboard crowns as 'gems' for nativity play costumes, come to think of it). A bit brittle when cold, you had to nurse them in your mouth until they were a bit more pliable. Properly lovely, they were.
