Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

I want someone who works in food retail or wholesale to come on and tell us why a lot of the things on here still turn up, but only in pound shops/ Iceland etc!

And why do they taste different? Is it just that we all have rose-tinted memories, or do they use different factories/processes now? (I'm assuming it can't all be down to historical ingredients that are now banned!)

In the 80s some neighbours (who I thought were very posh) used to sometimes invite people round for 'drinks and nibbles'. The nibbles always included things that were sort of long thing wafers filled with very processed cheesy filling. I often crave them. We also used to have dips that were powdered and you made them by whisking in milk. I know that the fresh dips sold everywhere now are much better but if they made powdered ones now I would keep some in the cupboard.

A particular soup from a restaurant in Spain. They used to serve it in a big tureen and I would eat the whole thing instead of dinner. It was delicious. Last time I went there they had stopped doing it 😩

strugglingwithlife my dh brought some fry's lemon Turkish delight a few days ago from Fultons foods so if you have one nearby it's worth a look they were 50p for four I think.

Etherealhedgehog · 06/05/2021 21:16

The demise of cucumber relish (always called pickle relish in our household) was so random and pointless. In my family it has always been an essential component of tuna mayo and it's still totally standard in the States. I don't understand why it just suddenly disappeared, it's not like it was a novelty snack food or something! After that we had to chop up dill pickles to go in the tuna instead but it's not the same (now I occasionally buy myself some from an American grocery store at great expense).

I think I might care too much about pickle relish.

Carbs 😭

@8dpwoah

Hardly see normal Feast ice creams now ☹️ or the snazzy flavours of Seabrook's although the beefy and the ham ones are usually around in Morrisons
I bought some Feast ice creams from Morrisons last year after seeing them and getting excited about a childhood favourite. They are not the same! The chocolate tastes like horrible cooking chocolate now and the bit in the middle is really thin.

Disappointed!

Whoever said the Birds Eye frozen beef in gravy, I agree. It was lovely and so handy if you fancied a roast style dinner for one without all of the effort.

2welshmums · 07/05/2021 09:24

Penguin Flipper Dippers were my childhood fave, been discontinued now

strugglingwithlife · 07/05/2021 09:33

Coffeeandcake36 thank you. I'm not sure if there is still one around here but I'll have a Google :)

Peek Frean cocktail biscuit selection; they also did cheese footballs, which you can still get. @WhatElseCouldIDo Sainsburys and Bisto still make frozen sliced beef in gravy. And @Etherealhedgehog , Amazon sell Baxters cucumber and dill relish.
Etherealhedgehog · 07/05/2021 09:54

I remember thinking this about Feast about ten years ago....I think they might always have been horrible. And I still see them everywhere. I suspect the only people who buy them are children who are still excited enough by the prospect of the chocolate to ignore the fact that it tastes like sawdust (which was definitely me)

Etherealhedgehog · 07/05/2021 09:55

@sueelleker amazing, thankyou! Maybe I can finally put tuna back on my regular sandwich rotation!

Armi · 07/05/2021 10:02

Toffee crunch sweets. Various places still claim to make it, but it isn’t anywhere near the same.

Not me! I love them! Although I think you're right it's the chocolate upon chocolate that is the main attraction. I do love ferrero richer though so maybe it's also the nutty chocolate?
RosesAndHellebores · 07/05/2021 10:08

This was quite disgusting and nobody remembers it but in the 60s my grandma used to buy me spaghetti bolognaise where the pasta came in one end of the tin and the meat/sauce in the other. My mother was making spaghetti bolognaise and I liked it. Grannie wasn't going to try making it so this was the next best thing as a "treat".
