Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

Bigsplosh Yes! Not Horlicks chocolate Ovaltine chocolate- it was amazing!

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 05/05/2021 15:47

Horlicks tablets here too, a treat we used to get from Boots.

Hot custard puddings and the granules that made a drink. I'm glad someone upthread mentioned them as I'd forgotten what they were called!

Frazzledbutcalm · 05/05/2021 16:44

Ooh forgot ... Greggs used to do a delicious cake called a cookie 😋 it was a round bread type bun filled with cream an a small smidge of piped jam. 😋

Deathraystare · 05/05/2021 16:59

Barmouth biscuits - the dog's bollux. Flat and crispy golden. Gorgeous!

FruityPolos · 05/05/2021 17:08

You can still buy Ice Cups / Icy Cups on the internet, try retro sweet websites. In massive tubs though not in a 10p mix up. We got some at Christmas, DD had a few, DP and I scoffed the rest when she was in bed 😁

WestendVBroadway · 05/05/2021 17:09

@BritInAus

Was there a Mini Cheddar variation which were a totally different texture - like thinner, crispy, lighter - with crinkles/ridges I think?! I've googled 'Mini Cheddar Crinkles' but can't find it. Would have been 90s sometimes. I loved them! Had some crackers recently that had exactly the same texture and they really took me back.
I am sure that you can still buy crinkle Cheddars.

I REMEMBER TWO BALL SCREWBALLS!

Ask ice gems are still a thing. There’s some in my kids snack box as we speak. Got them in Tesco.

bigsplosh · 05/05/2021 17:46

@HopingForOurRainbowBaby thanks. I had no idea you could do get it, but yes it was like spaghetti hoops in milk. I must have a look.

My DC flat out refused to eat spaghetti hoops once. Refused to believe it was pasta!

HadaVerde · 05/05/2021 17:52

Cheese and ham toast toppers.

Boots Chinese chicken sandwich circa 1990.

Marks and Spencer did a tin of beans with little chargrilled burger bites. Tasted like real BBQ. Circa 1990.

@smogsville

Sara Lee pecan danish. Great big round pastry from the freezer section with icing all over it. You warmed it through in the oven it had loads of cinnamon it was amazing. I would never make another pudding when we have people round if I could still buy this.
My absolute favourite

@BerniesMittens

Yay! So glad someone else remembers them! Yes, a perfect weekend afternoon treat. Oh, eating the fondant from around the top of the wrapper which had come away without fail!! I recall Sainsburys bought out a version called Harlequin which just had a pattern on top and a splodge of jam in the middle.

Bejam (remember them?!) had delicious frozen lemon glazed doughnuts.

pabloescobarselasticband · 05/05/2021 18:34

Fabulous bakin boys chocolate and lemon muffins

weekend2021 · 05/05/2021 19:14

Deathraystare - Barmouth biscuits , lovely until you dunked them in your tea when they went all floppy 😂

DrCoconut · 05/05/2021 19:17

Pot noodle was an annual treat for our holiday. My mum considered it to be expensive and unhealthy. I remember agonising over which flavour to get knowing it would be a year before the next one! I'm sure they aren't the same any more. I remember the orange juice powder too. Birds apeel.

Keepyourdistance000 · 05/05/2021 19:50

Mother's Pride White Bread

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 05/05/2021 20:30

@mrshonda

Can you still get Old Jamaica chocolate bars, flavoured with rum? They were lovely.
I bought one last week in home bargains. It tasted of broken dreams and disappointment. The raisins were ok, but very rummy-chemically, and whatever they were wrapped in was not chocolate! Tasted like candle wax! So disappointed Sad
Lipsandlashes · 06/05/2021 08:30

@TeaAddict235

Jacob's crunch bars (not the floppy chewy mess that they sell nowadays)

Moments (a chocolate with caramel and hazelnut in a hexagonal shaped chocolate bar)

Proper Ribena with the sugar

Nutella / Ferrero rocher ICE cream from Jack Fulton stores

Pickled onion Monster munch crisps baked snacks

Feast ice creams , both mint and dark chocolate and orange

Do you remember the coconut Feast ice cream? I only ever had one and then it disappeared forever
strugglingwithlife · 06/05/2021 09:08

Oh I forgot about feast ice-creams, they were my favourite when I was a child

Coffeeandcake36 · 06/05/2021 10:57

Seabrook cheese and chive crisps!! Ragequeen yes to branagans ham and mustard crisps, ah I can't taste them now! Christmaspuddingsteaminghot the cherry sweets were cherry drops I loved them too.

8dpwoah · 06/05/2021 11:15

Hardly see normal Feast ice creams now ☹️ or the snazzy flavours of Seabrook's although the beefy and the ham ones are usually around in Morrisons

strugglingwithlife · 06/05/2021 11:55

That reminds me of some crisps I liked as a child as well, they were t bone steak flavour

Roysters?

You can still find them. Lots of things mentioned upthread turn up in pound shops / Iceland / B&M. None of them taste the same.

I really miss Golden Wonder Spring Onion crisps. I can get them on line but like, 32 bags, and if I don't like them I'll be a little upset! From memory the flavouring was mostly sugar:)
