Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

Yes! Cheesy pancakes by findus and a Heinz choc pud in a tin!

Also hompride did a chocolate fridge cake kit called cool tops. I wish I knew how to replicate it as I never found the right combo.

And last but not least orange and apricot Ribena in a carton 🧡

Ice cream cake. I think it was from Iceland’s. It was in the shape of a dome, with three layers of ice cream in three different flavours. I think one of them was vanilla, another was caramel and the third outer layer was chocolate. It then had a chocolate sponge base. I don’t think I’ve had it since. It’s been almost 20 years and I still think about the taste Xmas Sad

@PaniniHead how kind of you - thanks! If the weather this weekend is as bad as last I may give this a whirl. Although it won't be nearly as good as just opening a box and hurling the ready made cake in the oven!

There are also Derbyshire oatcakes, probably like the Lancashire/Staffs ones except I don't think they're smooth on one side and rolled oats or oat bran on the other.
I really miss Spira. I am very bitter that they got discontinued and the inferior Wispa endures.

No one ever remembers Two-Ball Screwball from the ice cream van. Upside-down plastic cone of (raspberry ripple?) ice cream with two bubble gum balls in the bottom, which were frozen and used to just shatter when you tried to chew them.

Artesia · 05/05/2021 09:34

Oh my goodness- so many discontinued gems. Burger King Mushroom Double Swiss burger, M&S white chocolate eclairs, Danger Mouse Cherryaid and Terry's Neapolitan chocolates.

While I may miss them, my waistline definitely doesn't!

IntermittentParps · 05/05/2021 09:42

'discontinued gems' made me think of Iced Gems! Remember them?

And Ice Cups. No one ever remembers these either but I've found pictorial evidence. Just like solid, slightly soft chocolate but when you bit into them they were cold on the inside. Quite weird really.

Ice gems - with the polar bear? They sell them in... Iceland? Pound shop? Somewhere like that. The cups were what you used to get a school parties.

IntermittentParps · 05/05/2021 09:48

I don't remember a polar bear. Do you mean Fox's Glacier Mints/Fruits? I mean the little biscuits in my pic.

IntermittentParps · 05/05/2021 09:49

I used to buy Ice Cups from a jar at the corner shop. Don't remember them at parties.

Soubriquet · 05/05/2021 09:51

Iced gems are sold in all shops with food really

I remember screwballs. I'm sure they were also available in supermarkets, possibly Iceland, fairly recently.

You can still buy iced gems. They've probably taken out all the tasty nasty artificial colours, flavours and preservatives and won't taste the same, though, sadly Grin

Oh yes, those colours look a bit too washed-out and natural compared to the old ones Grin

I can confirm you are correct Sad I bought some for DDs a few weeks ago and had a sneaky packet. They were so dry and devoid of flavour, it was like eating horse chaff

Giay · 05/05/2021 10:08

Ice Cups were a corner shop staple

KarmaViolet · 05/05/2021 10:13

Can you still get ketchup filled potato thingies?

My parents always did healthy food but if I went to my friend's for tea we were given these potato things - like really fat chips, but a tube of fluffy potato encased in a crispy outer and with an inner tube of ketchup running through them. I was OBSESSED.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 05/05/2021 10:29

@bigsplosh

It was a sweet/pudding like rice pudding.
Was it like spaghetti hoops but in milk instead of tomato sauce? Pretty sure it's just called macaroni and I'm sure you can still get it in the supermarket along the rice pudding section has a dark purple label I think
3Britnee · 05/05/2021 10:54

Puffs crisps
Chicken curry findus pancakes
Pizzas that came in the bag
Sainsbury's cheese and ham mini cheddars

lollipoprainbow · 05/05/2021 11:18

@IntermittentParps I remember ice cups they came in little frilly cases in shiny green and red foil.

IntermittentParps · 05/05/2021 11:21

lollipoprainbow, yes! Well, I remember lots of colours, including a lovely blue.
HOW did they give them the 'cold' effect??

Baked Alaska! Yum.
TeaAddict235 · 05/05/2021 11:52

Jacob's crunch bars (not the floppy chewy mess that they sell nowadays)

Moments (a chocolate with caramel and hazelnut in a hexagonal shaped chocolate bar)

Proper Ribena with the sugar

Nutella / Ferrero rocher ICE cream from Jack Fulton stores

Pickled onion Monster munch crisps baked snacks

Feast ice creams , both mint and dark chocolate and orange

Dinkydody · 05/05/2021 12:13

@zebrarobot

Irn bru bar
You can still get these Smile
zukiecat · 05/05/2021 12:28

Proper full sugar Irn Bru
Cremola Foam

The Tesco Deli Counter, I don't usually like Turkey, but the Smoked Turkey was so nice.

I'd get that for me, the cats got chicken, and my DDs loved Billy Bear Ham, so that was a weekly treat for us all.

Dinkydody · 05/05/2021 12:37

@Christmaspuddingsteaminghot

Yoghurts in post shaped like monsters Frozen mousses Individual wrapped cherry flavour sweets that came in a roll, anyone know what they were called?!
