Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

At secondary school, the spring rolls were almost pancake like in texture and the inside had some sort of gravy with the veg. They were delicious. Also secondary school iced buns!

And Tesco cheese sauce Mexican sweet corn filled wraps in the sandwich section.

RemyMorgan · 04/05/2021 20:57

@tedsletterofthelaw

Golden Grahams

Sun Lollies

Libby's Orange C (you could still get that until recently Sad)

Original Sunny Delight

Asda used to do these mini Cornish pasties from the deli counter that were amazing

I can't remember the name but you used to get yoghurts with different monster faces on each pot, I loved those!

Fiendish Feet! I came on to say those. Yum.

@ShowOfHands

Ohh and those little very crunchy garlic crouton/crispbread things.
Yes! Like mini slices of bread with a crust all around the edge-they stank and were hard as nails ... I loved them.

Ooh mint giant puff candy bar, a bit like a Crunchie but softer honeycomb and coffee walnut whips (M & S did a version for a while but I think it's been discontinued).

And there was something called a Bettabar or something like that. It was like puffed wheat held together with industrial sugary glue.

Cattenberg · 04/05/2021 21:49

@TabbyBeast

United biscuit bars - blue pack milk chocolate with honeycomb pieces / red pack dark chocolate.

Those tiny sponge cakes topped with a layer of form fondant icing - came in orange / lemon and chocolate ones.

Tizer just isn't the same although it's not readily available.

Cobana? Chocolate bars - like Bounty but with cherries too

Space biscuits

I think the tiny sponge cakes were fondant fancies. I remember them being at every kids’ party, along with Party Rings.

That photo of Fiendish Feet took me back 30 years. I remember some of my classmates bringing them to primary school.

I miss Terry’s Marzipan Bar and Terry’s Pyramint. Come back, Terry! I still love you!

MagicMatilda · 04/05/2021 22:06

Uncle Bens risotto, it came in a bag and you cooked it in the microwave...was heavenly but then vanished overnight :(

AngeloMysterioso · 04/05/2021 22:07

Citrus Polos

And what was the name of that fizzy drink in a clear can that had little balls of... something in them?

M&S sandwiches in the early-mid 90s, especially the prawn cocktail and prawn salad ones. Cheese and celery ones were also delicious.

M&S crisps from around the same time, especially the ready salted ones in the red bag.

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 04/05/2021 22:24

Puffa Puffa Rice.
Best cereal ever.

queenjaneappro · 04/05/2021 22:44

Terry's moments, no one ever remembers them. My all time favourite chocolate bar.

My mum used to get me one every Thursday (and a copy of Just 17!) when she did the weekly shop.

TheChippendenSpook · 04/05/2021 22:57

I could just drink some Ribena (how it used to taste) from a carton.

I really miss Galaxy chocolate before it became all creamy and horrible. I miss the old wrapping too and rectangular pieces with sharpish edges.

I also really miss boil in the mash sausage and mash with onion gravy. It was divine! I think it was Menu Master but could have been Bird's eye.

TheChippendenSpook · 04/05/2021 22:59

What I really miss most of all is McDonald's hot fudge sundaes! I've contemplated going to Florida for one but that would be a very very expensive trip! Grin

btwwhichonespink · 04/05/2021 23:01

OOh not a food you can't get anymore but I do sometimes still get cravings for sugar sandwiches! Had to be in white bread with loads of butter.

btwwhichonespink · 04/05/2021 23:05

@FruityPolos

This thread is making me hungry for snacks! I agree with others - ready salted chipsticks, Spira bars, United biscuits.

I also miss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crisps, they were shell shaped and really tasty. And chocolate bars full of coloured goo from the 80s - there was a Ghostbusters one, a Care Bears one and a Thundercat one. We used to get them in Woolworths.

When I was pregnant the only thing which helped my morning sickness was Fruit Polos and they were really hard to find (in 2016). DP used to get them in a corner shop on his way home from work for me.

Just got flashbacks of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Apple pizza that my brother insisted on having for his birthday
PaniniHead · 04/05/2021 23:05

@smogsville This recipe is a really good copy of the Pecan Danish- www.bigoven.com/recipe/sara-lee-pecan-coffee-cake/1254790

BritInAus · 05/05/2021 00:54

@nailsathome

Totally agree to Secret bars, chicken tikka crispy pancakes and also those yoghurts with monster faces on. I'm really craving them all now! Also the lucozade tablets and a fab apple strudel I used to get from a local bakery
I think those yoghurts were 'Fiendish Feet!' moviesandmania.com/2015/07/16/fiendish-feet-dairy-desserts/
BritInAus · 05/05/2021 01:32

Was there a Mini Cheddar variation which were a totally different texture - like thinner, crispy, lighter - with crinkles/ridges I think?! I've googled 'Mini Cheddar Crinkles' but can't find it. Would have been 90s sometimes. I loved them! Had some crackers recently that had exactly the same texture and they really took me back.

Oh yes. We used to buy them from the cake stall in the market, packs of 6. Saturday afternoon treat.

Moonwhite · 05/05/2021 01:45

I miss Trios (not the palm oil updated version we had a few years back), Pacers, Toffo's, and Lyon's Corner chocolate cupcakes, the ones with the really glossy icing.

I find that most junk food of today tastes "off" to me, I wonder if it's the palm oil that's in most things. I hardly ever buy chocolate these days. Cadbury's now has a slight bile aftertaste that reminds me of American chocolate.

Everything used to taste delicious when I was a kid, I can still remember the taste of loads of things. I don't know if the ingredients have really degraded that much, or if my tastebuds changed. Probably a bit of both. For a snack I'll happily take a chunk of decent cheese instead of chocolate digestives or a packet of crisps.

BerniesMittens · 05/05/2021 01:47

And also Walker’s crisps when they hid little blue packets in them

Used to be Smiths crisps back in the ‘70s with the blue salt packet! (now owned by Walkers)

MrsClatterbuck · 05/05/2021 01:52

@aliensprig

Heinz hot puddings that came in a tin. Do they still do those?! Couldn't eat them now but I miss them so much.
Dh loved these. You heated them in boiling water.
MrsClatterbuck · 05/05/2021 01:55

This was a long time ago but my DM used to do these boiled bacon ribs. She put whole small onions in with them. Served with floury boiled potatoes the boiled onions and cabbage. Simple but delicious.

Anystarinthesky · 05/05/2021 02:16

I remember the 'Lovely' chocolate pudding too!

' Death by Chocolate' gateaux.

The Gooseberry chocolate in the 'Quality Street' box.

Aztec chocolate bars.

daisypetula · 05/05/2021 02:23

@BrownEyedGirl80

Ready salted chipsticks.God knows why you can only get salt and vinegar.
Mark's and Spencer's at bp petrol stations have them
Aria999 · 05/05/2021 02:48

Findus crispy cheese pancakes (and I'm not even pregnant). I think they stopped making them.

Also old style Cadbury's creme eggs before they halved the size and messed with the recipe.
