Mourning food from your childhood that you can’t get anymore

AngeloMysterioso · 04/05/2021 10:31

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and having some very random cravings, unfortunately for stuff it’s impossible to get my hands on now! Specifically Birds Eye boil-in-the-bag chicken and mushroom casserole, Sainsbury’s cucumber relish, and Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream.

Anyone else grieving for the amazing food of their youth that is now a distant memory?

@Gliblet

Sago?

There were a few other sweet tinned puddings that seem to have vastly reduced or vanished - Ambrosia used to do semolina, sago, and tapioca puddings.

How do you start a pudding race? Sago Grin

I'll fetch my coat...

I buy semolina and tapioca as I see them but haven't seen sago for years.

You can still get the raspberry frozen mousses in mini tubs in Tesco but I refuse to buy them as they're full of palm oil and likely taste vile.

Fiendish Feet, Potato Puffs, Toast Toppers, Fuse, Discos, Cool Bits (nobody EVER remembers them), all sadly missed.

Oh and those little hard cola or apple sweets in a small roll? With a sugary outside. What were they?

ShowOfHands · 04/05/2021 19:57

Frosties!

I loved the apple ones.

HollowTalk · 04/05/2021 19:58

@niceberg

HollowTalk the Preston bakery we bought them from definitely didn't call them Staffordshire oatcakes 🤓 but funnily enough I googled after posting and came across Staffordshire oatcakes and they do look very similar - I'd never heard that name before. Off to add to my Tesco order!
That's where they originated. I grew up in Stoke on Trent and there would be tiny shops which just made oatcakes. I love them toasted with cheese and tomato.

Mignon Morceaux. So nice!

This thread is making me hungry for snacks! I agree with others - ready salted chipsticks, Spira bars, United biscuits.

I also miss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crisps, they were shell shaped and really tasty. And chocolate bars full of coloured goo from the 80s - there was a Ghostbusters one, a Care Bears one and a Thundercat one. We used to get them in Woolworths.

When I was pregnant the only thing which helped my morning sickness was Fruit Polos and they were really hard to find (in 2016). DP used to get them in a corner shop on his way home from work for me.

lolacola77 · 04/05/2021 20:11

Gypsy Cream biscuits, Secret bars, Spira, Bitz bats, dark chocolate Banjo and Funny Feet lollies...

Dellaandthedealer · 04/05/2021 20:14

Still miss Crawford Royal Scot biscuits.........

WellTidy · 04/05/2021 20:17

Circa 1992, Tesco used to make a Mississippi mid pie. It was absolutely amazing. Really rich but the biscuit base was perfect. I loved it.

lollipoprainbow · 04/05/2021 20:19

Cheese buttons and potato triangles from
Sainsbury's ! They were very salty but delicious probably why they were discontinued!

lollipoprainbow · 04/05/2021 20:20

Ricicles sugar coated rice crispies yum !

RealisticSketch · 04/05/2021 20:25

Beanos - they were kind of like Smarties but nicer.
Seabrook spring onion flavour - yes they still do it... But they have changed the recipe and it's not nearly so nice.
Super noodles mild curry flavour. Why!? Just why did they stop that one?!
The village bakery where I grew up made all their own bread etc, they did an amazing currant loaf whose bread between the currants was a golden yellow (egg ingredient maybe 🤷) ... It was sooooooo delicious, the bakery changed hands when I was 13 and it was never the same again... I have been pining for 32 years. 😆😆

lollipoprainbow · 04/05/2021 20:28

Butter thins really nice super thin butter biscuits

sergeilavrov · 04/05/2021 20:36

Gooseberry Muller Corner; Cadbury Dream; Mint Mingles; the old Double Decker with currants; Mars Delight; Cadbury Tiffin is almost impossible to find too.

I’m fairly sure there were elf bars with popping candy too, DH 'made' some while I was pregnant and I recall being unreasonably sad they weren't elf shaped. He had no idea what I was on about.

FaceyRomford · 04/05/2021 20:36

Kennedy's sausage rolls and steak pies. (This will mean nothing to anyone who doesn't come from South London.)

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 04/05/2021 20:37

Gypsy Creams.

And the original Golf biscuits that had a golf ball on the wrapper.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 04/05/2021 20:38

Oh and Costa Mushroom and Emmenthal toastie which they haven't sold since Lockdown #1.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 04/05/2021 20:40

From my childhood in the 80’s
Miss bits biscuits, Hubba Bubba in a can, bright green cordial that had a flavour completely removed from anything natural & pizza pockets. I’ve no idea what pizza pockets tasted of because I always burnt my mouth on the first bite!
More recently (very early 2000’s) Sainsbury’s used to do an amazing tiramisu cake. I used to guiltily eat a whole one in the evening watching Buffy!!

vixeyann · 04/05/2021 20:40

Findus cheese and tomato french bread pizzas and Fuse and Spira bars.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 04/05/2021 20:43

And Crawford's Orange Creams and Lemon Creams. All my memories seem to be biscuit-related. Figures really.

shinynewapple21 · 04/05/2021 20:45

@ShowOfHands
Where the sweets individually wrapped and came in flavours of Coca Cola, fizzy Cherry, then an apple one with a caramel centre and a strawberry and cream one ?

I was addicted to those sweets , this was back in the 1970s and no idea how long they made them for

So much more of a choice of chocolate bars years ago too.

MintyMabel · 04/05/2021 20:53

And also Walker’s crisps when they hid little blue packets in them

Salt n shake, you still get these.

MintyMabel · 04/05/2021 20:55

Fruit Polos and they were really hard to find (in 2016)

WH Smith’s at any airport. DD loves flying because we always get these!
