Has anyone regretted getting a white kitchen floor? Has anyone regretted anything they chose for their kitchen actually?

Basically i can't chose what i want in my kitchen and it's driving me insane!

I think i've chosen a quartz worktop (calacatta with a thin additional vein of copper in it) and i think i've chosen a magnet cabinet style (tatton) but for life of me i don't know what colour to chose for the floor and to be honest can't chose the colour of the cabinets either!

If i go with a white floor to echo the quartz will i regret it? At least white/white means the cabinet colour will be easier to chose? No?

Re-oiled

Needsomethingtoread · 02/05/2021 07:25

I love my wood worktops. I just use a lemon oil spray each week and that keeps them protected. Had them 8 years and still look great. I hate my limestone floor with underfloor heating. Every splash/mark sinks in and you cant get off. Looks grubby all the time. I’m going to get a massive rug to cover that area

FoolsAssassin · 02/05/2021 07:33

Thank you HasaDiga , I was hoping that would be the case!

black slate style tiles.
they show up every bit og dirt and dust.
same for high gloss kitchen kabinets and stainless steel splashback.

oh and dark composite stone countertop. that you can't clean with limescale cleaner...

it looked soooo good and practical in the showroom

BoffinMum · 02/05/2021 07:44

My wooden worktops have been amazingly practical. My Lamona combination microwave is rubbish. I hate taking all the shelves out every time I need to use the microwave function. It is also difficult to clean.

CrisisManagement · 02/05/2021 07:47

I very much regret my white sink and can't wait to replace it.
We eat a lot of curries and it stains so easily.

SIHastingsLiketheBattle · 02/05/2021 07:49

@Laiste you could get your kitchen from DIY Kitchens in the colour you like.

Arrowheart · 02/05/2021 07:53

I have a white kitchen floor and hate it. Shows up everything. Constantly cleaning it and constantly annoyed by it.

Moresleepandwine · 02/05/2021 08:03

@laiste, DIY kitchens colour match anything at not much more than the regular price. I am updating my kitchen and have chosen a very pale cream for the wall units and a navy for the island. I chose a floor that looks similar to the one in your inspiration. It's very pale but mottled
in a cement effect that I am hoping will hide all the dirt! httpss://www.mandarinstone.com/product/fusion-white-matt-porcelain/

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/05/2021 08:03

I got persuaded to have light coloured (not white, more of a golden cream) in my kitchen and I hate them! They show every mark! And they're fragile too, and already have chips.

Wish I'd gone with slate.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/05/2021 08:08

@Laiste

billysboy pull out bin under prep area!! Genius!!

I have this, and I love it. Also love the integrated wine fridge and very tall "pantry style" cupboard. But the light floor is a PITA.

fiorentina · 02/05/2021 09:46

Previous owners used white grout and it’s a nightmare to keep clean.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 02/05/2021 09:47

I have a just-off-white floor and it breaks my heart trying to keep it clean. I also don't think it'll last more than a few years with the constant mopping.

turkeyboots · 02/05/2021 09:57

I inherited a white kitchen floor and hall with the house. Previous owners must have really really loved cleaning.

KittyKatyKate · 02/05/2021 21:34

@MissMarplesGoddaughter

I wish I had had a built under sink the in the kitchen. I also had a worktop with a little lip along the edge. It sounded great, but I would not have it again.

I have a wooden floor which is easy to keep clean and doesn't show the dirt

We’re looking for a wooden floor too, do you mind letting me know where yours is from please?
lljkk · 02/05/2021 22:01

My folks have white tiles in their kitchen area... this thread is making me realise (yet another reason) why they don't like us visiting. Step-mum is probably cleaning the floor constantly when we are there but I have been oblivious.

They are enormously precious about their floors. Mostly engineered wood. It's pretty exhausting.

ps: my favourite kitchen floor was quarry tiles.

Laiste · 02/05/2021 22:43

Thank you so so much everyone! Been out all day and have come back and been reading with great interest.

SpnBaby1967 yes, that's my worry with having a white floor but with colour or marbling - is it clean/isn't it clean. I will look that program up, thank you!

RuggeryBuggery you're right and i have learned this a) MILs new floor has done this and b) my own struggle in the downstairs loo. White grouting, white tile = stress.

cheeseychovolate Grin yep, see above.

Cherrysoup interesting about the textured laminate trouble. Maybe a better quality laminate (Amtico) is quite highly textured? Ours which we have through the downstairs is more ... affordable (B&Q) and is only lightly textured and easy to mop.

Hazel444 do you know i've never once considered a pattered floor tile Shock You don't see them very often in kitchen inspiration pictures at the moment either. A trend in waiting perhaps? Thank you for a fresh idea :)

safariboot made me laugh. Black marble - dirt/hair/bits/paint specks or the marble itself!? Yes, i can picture that Grin

@Time40 once a week moping would be ok with me. Bit i'm starting to think i will regret it if it still doesn't look clean even then. The posh description - Grin Yes some of the things you hear yourself come out with when you're choosing a kitchen begger belief! Today i heard myself say to SIL that the Cararra marble would just clash terribly if the majority of woodwork is in soft pebble Hmm Christ let this all be over soon Grin

@Seasidemumma77 Shock Awful! This has made me think maybe not to the (B&Q) laminate going into the then ...

@humansare is there any possibility you could come and live with me for the next couple of months? Your thoughts and ideas are brilliant! And then move in with SIL - she needs kitchen help after me. Copper handles to go with copper veins. Yes ...... rubs chin. And the rainbow speckle white - love it! I have done a wall of our downstairs loo in subtle rainbow speckle on white shower wall (with gloss white tiled floor) It glitters gently in the sun and makes a surprising happy break from the serious period Georgian tastefulness of the rest of downstairs Grin

GillBiggeloesHair bet it looks lovely when it's all clean. But that's a lot of white floor!

DinosApple oooh you have my kitchen!? Grin I will bare that in mind about the staining. They say quartz wont stain but i'm using my samples as coasters at the mo to test that theory with coffee tea blackcurrent ect ...

longwayoff you're bang on the money. I love a show home look but get very stressed knocking myself out trying to keep it that way. stupid really.

thelegohooverer never thought about the worktop and plates. I DID know about butler sinks (ceramic) and being careful with glasses (grew up with butler sink) ... which is why i want a normal stainless steel one. Love the idea of dirt coloured laminate Grin

StarlightLady that's a good tip. Leftovers from tile supplier. Thank you. Are yours a plain white? Square? Gloss?

@Makingnumber2 that made me smile. We have white cats which shed so a black floor wouldn't do for us either. DH is dark, i'm blond - you're right - what floor?!?!? What really doesn't show dirt anyway? Anything extreme light or dark i guess ... And the cold, yes. My new downstairs loo glossy floor is bloody FREEZING on bare feet.

Herhereherhere I have been sent a sample of a stone effect porcelain tile. It is matte and has texture like you describe. I am wondering if it might not show the dirt and might not be too cold ... ? Those calacatta floor tiles are gorgeous - but we have to buy 22 sq ft and DH has asked me to try to keep the price down to £10 per sq ft - HARD!

Woodpecker22 yep agreed.

@BBCK paving stone effect sounds lovely. Were they expensive? Could you give a link?

redcandlelight so many are saying the same about the high gloss. And yes to stone worktops being tricky with oven cleaner/limescale remover ect.

SIHastingsLiketheBattle DIY has the blue/grey? I will check it out! Thanks.

Moresleepandwine that tile is divine!!! It's what i would have in a heart beat to be honest. But we need so much of it (22sqft) that anything much over a tenner per squ ft is too much for us. But thank you. I love that ...

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal my tall corner pantry/larder/cupboard is one of my non-compromise bits of the new kitchen Grin

turkeyboots white hall? Eek!!

22 square meters. Not feet. Of kitchen floor.
Hmm

Time40 · 02/05/2021 22:59

what floor?!?!? What really doesn't show dirt anyway?

Very dark grey cushioned vinyl floor covering in a fake stone pattern (so with bits of cream). It's amazing ... I'd better not confess how little I have cleaned that floor, but it's very very little indeed.

Next best I've found is terracotta vinyl, in a fake tiles pattern (so again, with some cream). Needs cleaning ... sometimes.

Laiste · 02/05/2021 23:00

So where am i now?

Torn between sticking with trying to do a Tom Howley copy (pale stone effect floor, bluegrey cabinets, cold tone carrara quartz) and starting over with yet another company which does the blue/grey in a colour we can afford

or

going with the Magnet pebble cupboards, the calacatta luxe (copper vein) quartz with ?? floor.

Will i get fed up with the tall units in a blue/grey and risk finding it all a bit cave like? Or shall i get the safer 'pebble' and risk wishing i hadn't chickened out?

OP posts:
Laiste · 02/05/2021 23:04

Time40 you've described what i had in my last kitchen! The grey cushioned vinyl. You're right - it is VERY forgiving. The masochist in me is winning though right now and pushing me towards a harder work flooring.

RedcurrantPuff · 02/05/2021 23:12

Nothing really I regret getting but I do regret not getting a quooker.

I was so tempted to get it but decided it wasn’t really worth it..,.if only I had known 3 years later I’d be at home and making brews ALL THE TIME - if I had I would definitely have got one!

RedcurrantPuff · 02/05/2021 23:12

As for the floor I could live with white tiles but white grout..no

FlyingPandas · 02/05/2021 23:23

@Woodpecker22

I think it depends a lot on the texture of the floor. In our old kitchen we had a highly polished cream porcelain floor which was a nightmare to keep clean. We now have a very pale grey porcelain but it is quite textured and uneven in colour and does a good job of hiding any dirt in between cleans. I would definitely avoid anything polished or plain in colour.
As above. Plain, flat colour, high gloss/polished, very dark or very pale tiles can look stunning BUT are utterly impractical. We also chose very pale grey but matt, textured porcelain tiles for our kitchen and they have been brilliant. What you want is enough texture to hide a bit of dirt but not so much texture that it looks like dirt. If that makes sense.

I do regret getting a dark (anthracite grey) quartz worktop. Looks lovely but shows every handprint and smear. With hindsight, would have gone for darker cupboards and lighter worktops.

On the other hand, we have a glass splashback and I love it. You’d think glass would show every single splash of water but actually it’s pretty forgiving and looks stunning too. Much nicer than tiles.

Time40 · 02/05/2021 23:30

Time40 you've described what i had in my last kitchen!

Ah, how funny! Yes, that stuff is a real time-saver.

I'm sure your new kitchen will be lovely, OP, and worth the bit of extra work. (I do actually sort of care about these things, sometimes. I wanted 1950s-style pale blue Formica worktops for mine, the sort with little dark speckles in the colour ... you can't get such a thing anywhere, unless you have it custom made. I was most disappointed.)
