Has anyone regretted getting a white kitchen floor? Has anyone regretted anything they chose for their kitchen actually?

Basically i can't chose what i want in my kitchen and it's driving me insane!

I think i've chosen a quartz worktop (calacatta with a thin additional vein of copper in it) and i think i've chosen a magnet cabinet style (tatton) but for life of me i don't know what colour to chose for the floor and to be honest can't chose the colour of the cabinets either!

If i go with a white floor to echo the quartz will i regret it? At least white/white means the cabinet colour will be easier to chose? No?

Heeeeeelp Grin

There must have been some kind of seismic shift, so many projects kick started again Smile We have been told our window and lantern roof should be available this week. We have been delayed since Christmas so I'm only cautiously optimistic. Hoping my builder isn't booked up with too many other projects now 😏

EversoDelighted · 15/06/2021 18:46

Another Grin. That's the tricky part, lining up all the dates, I spent quite a lot of time on that last week.

Was chatting with SIL at the weekend about her kitchen rebuild/re jig.

She's practically begging builders to come round and quote. Ringing round/emailing. Some say they're busy till next year, most don't reply at all. When one finally did agree to come out she was instantly suspicious about why he wasn't busy :\

Tricky times.

No further forward here, have gone off the boil a bit. 🤨

DH was quite interested in the wood floor effect tiles, so that's a step forward.

Might get to have a look round a couple of showrooms this weekend. 🤞

EversoDelighted · 17/06/2021 22:06

I had the flooring company round to measure up and estimate today. The chap said they had been working flat out for the last year, never known anything like it.

Horsemad · 17/06/2021 22:21

I can imagine Everso. Everyone's been getting stuff done!

That's beautiful @LittleOverWhelmed.

2welshmums · 18/06/2021 00:16

I don't know about white, but our worktops are black granite and floors are dark grey tiles & they are a fucking nightmare to keep clean.

Every speck of dust is visible and as soon as it's cleaned, it settles there again and needs a wipe less than an hour later - really drives me insane but can't afford to replace it.

sluj · 18/06/2021 17:15

Lovely kitchen @littleoverwhelmed.
Could you share with me how you managed to get that fridge freezer in without it sticking out three inches at the front? Is there a sizeable gap between the fridge and the units so you can open the doors out? Or could that fridge possibly be the holy grail I have been seeking??

Omg what a great thread!
I remember casting an eye over a few pages ages ago because our cheap white vinyl floor is so grimy and u cleanable but I got lost at the rest of the new kitchen speak.
Since then our cooker has been condemned and suddenly, yesterday I was in magnet having a design drawn up and today I was in topps Tiles looking at flooring.

I must say the vinyl wood effect sheet roll has won me. As dogs said, cheap easy to replace...

Op.. I've had a nail biting ride over your cabinet colour choice, your original love of the bluey green with the marble top was my inital love but I then switched to pebble in magnet and again your then colour combo I liked with the brass.
I liked your navy too in a larger kitchen.

My choice is pebble with brass /copper and a laminate vinyl marble top. White top cupboards.

I can't get as many drawers as I wanted though and not the large wide ones in the show rooms sadly.

From this thread I'm aldi dropping the idea of a microwave /oven /grill.

Op why are you having two ovens? Can't say a roast, pots, stuffing etc fit in one oven?

I'm moving from a free standing gas to integrated oven.
I'm also thinking of the induction hob.

I decided on a copper /brass sink but magnet man said he can't do it the under sink? I chose a ceramic sink with the copper tap but again I'm not sure if re sink. I couldn't do stainless steel and copper tap.

This has been such a timely thread.

Op, I'm not wildly keen on the cashmere....

ICanSmellSummerComing · 20/06/2021 21:51
  • did you have your magnet kitchen priced up in the sale? It's x amount off for x cabinets and also a 500 off appliance voucher.
Laiste · 21/06/2021 21:51

Hi @ICanSmellSummerComing :)

Welcome to the all consuming heaven/hell of The World Of 'New Kitchen'.

We need two ovens as my elderly mum lives with us and her meal timings and food preferences are completely at odds with ours so we eat and cook separately. But not always at different times iyswim?!?! So i don't want any more fighting over who's cooking when, lol.

Our Magnet quote was with the 50% off yes. I am willing to bet you can save roughly half the price of what Magnet quotes by going with DIY ...

(I promise this thread isn't just a really long winded ad for DIY Grin My kitchen is still sitting in their online 'basket'!)

There are times i still think about the Tom Howley colour scheme .... sigh. However i would only want that blue/grey cabinet colour with a very pale floor and i am pretty sure that boat has sailed ...

Loving hearing about everyone's progress.

We have our vertical steel in. The delivery plus welding took 5 hours Shock and the whole house smelt of burned hair afterwards. Luverly.

In other boring news we are STILL trying to get the settling appointment for our finance. The cock ups the bank have made have gone past amusing and are now at alarming. Just now (12 hours before big last phone appointment with them) they've emailed to say they've spelled our name wrong on all the paperwork and can we take in driving licences to a branch in the morning to confirm our sir name ..... Confused We have a mortgage with them already ... SO no phone appt. tomorrow after all.

Sometimes i think i am doomed never to get my kitchen

Thanks for the Oven info, I was concerned I had missed something obvious about having two.

I have just been reading ultima furniture reviews/DIY ( same company reviews) and I must admit I am concerned, its such a lot of money and they say that parts were missing and damaged and little after service care but I have also just been reading the same for magnet on trust piolet.

Maybe somewhere like B and Q is the way to go....so disappointing! I was feeling so confident.

Laiste · 21/06/2021 22:54

I think you can find good vs bad reviews for every company out there.

I mean - i've read rave reviews about Howdens, but my personal experience with my nearest branch was abysmal! If i'd done a review it would have been bad.

My experience at my local B&Q wasn't good ...

If you're really concerned about going to the right place then research your facts about cabinet quality. Thickness of back board, thickness of side panels. You can find easy to read comparisons which have been done and posted online.

Bespoke cabinetry will always be the most expensive and the best quality. You work your way down from that really.

The customer service/after sales seems to be luck of the drawer. I've read bad reviews about the customer service from deVol and Tom Howely. Both are visually stunning ££££ kitchen companies.

The high st brands - they are mostly medium quality cabinets. Great customer service at the point of sale. Luck of the drawer after that.

B&Q ect. the cabinets tend to be on the thin side.

DIY have good quality cabinets with good backboard strength. You save money IMO because they don't have a lot of flashy showrooms to run and designers handing out cups of coffee Grin

I would go into some different places and get some real designs done. You find out more that way very quickly. Who's pushy and £££ and who listens and who doesn't.

Laiste · 24/06/2021 21:27

I've gone back to my first love:

www.tomhowley.co.uk/kitchens/elegant-blue-shaker-kitchen/

It's going to be a pale stone floor, a white quartz worktop and a bespoke cabinet colour from DIY to match Tom Howley. Somehow.

Bumps the price up to nearly 10k but - still cheaper than Magnet et all - and it's what i wanted in my heart all along.

I realise that at this point i probably appear to be completely mad Grin I blame having too long to think about it ...

Don't mind me.
How's everyone else?

OP posts:
Laiste · 24/06/2021 21:46

There's a paint company called Valspar (available in B&Q) and their website has a function where you can download a photo containing the colour you want to match. You click the little pointer on it and it tells you a code to ask for instore for a mix. It's only £3 for a tester.

B&Q on Saturday :) This is what it says the Tom Howley blue/grey is.

Has anyone regretted getting a white kitchen floor? Has anyone regretted anything they chose for their kitchen actually?

Done it again on a different area of the photo and now it says this one, which i think is an even better match.

Aah @Laiste, I don't blame you, that kitchen looks gorgeous. ❤️
I think the second shade is a better match.

We had a look in a very upmarket independent place last weekend and I saw an amazing Silestone sink which I love.

Laiste · 24/06/2021 22:23

Thank you Horsemad xx

It's chucked this one in now which is good too.

Ooooh Silestone sink. White? Is it like a butler/ceramic sink?

I'd love to go with something a bit posher than the usual stainless steel, but we have A LOT of washing up in this house (lots of folk no dish washer) and the little carved drainer line area in quartz just wont cope. Don't know what would be a good compromise.
