Has anyone regretted getting a white kitchen floor? Has anyone regretted anything they chose for their kitchen actually?

Basically i can't chose what i want in my kitchen and it's driving me insane!

I think i've chosen a quartz worktop (calacatta with a thin additional vein of copper in it) and i think i've chosen a magnet cabinet style (tatton) but for life of me i don't know what colour to chose for the floor and to be honest can't chose the colour of the cabinets either!

If i go with a white floor to echo the quartz will i regret it? At least white/white means the cabinet colour will be easier to chose? No?

Tiled floor. Everything breaks when you drop it!

Horsemad · 11/05/2021 12:43

Lol @Laiste, I totally sympathise - it took 2 years of trekking round showrooms before we managed to choose our bathroom! 😆

Re cashmere, yes, the colour is so different between manufacturers. Some are pinky blush and some are sort of putty colour.

I really need a design doing first, we're fairly limited in layout, it's just deciding which side of kitchen to have the oven fitted and whether to go for a fridge/freezer built in or have them both separate under the counter (I prefer the tall built in type).
Just minor details before we actually start considering units! 😃

Laiste · 11/05/2021 14:41

Magnet does a really good design service @horsemad. Nice people too. Both times i've had them design this kitchen Blush

Both times they've emailed me the plans, the digital views and the 'shopping list' without having to give a deposit. Takes an hour or so in the showroom.

Then let us have a nose on here Grin

We've had designs done by Magnet, Wren, Howdens and Wickes this year. Wren did by far the best job, but to be fair we kept changing our mind about the basic layout. Our kitchen could do with being about 50cm wider, it would make a huge difference.

EversoDelighted · 11/05/2021 15:37

We also got our builder in, he made some useful suggestions too.

Horsemad · 11/05/2021 20:11

I'm probably going to get 3 designs, Magnet will most likely be one of them as I think there's a branch fairly local.
Tbf as I said, there's not a lot of scope with our kitchen. I did suggest blocking up the existing back door and rejigging the kitchen somewhat.
I wasn't really serious about it but it was fun to see the whites of DH's eyes as he contemplated the cost and upheaval! 😆

FoolsAssassin · 11/05/2021 21:09

We’ve just had our builder round to quote for rejigging our kitchen. He warned me the price of materials has shot up drastically, especially wood, screws, chipboard and cement. I knew as has some fencing done recently and luckily paid for the materials in February. By the time it came to April when it was put up the cost of materials were up by about 30% due to the lack of wood coming in from Eastern Europe according to the fencer.

I’ve had a white ceramic sink for 15 years. Only smashed a couple of things and Barkeepers Friend sorts any stains. No intention of replacing it when get the work done.

Laiste · 11/05/2021 21:40

EversoDelighted and horsemad apart from the 2 Magnet designs (nearly 3 years apart) i also had Wickes do a design, Howdens, plus different 2 independent local carpenter/fitter companies.

My worst experience was Howdens. The bloke came to measure up, telling me he never relied on anything except his own inch tape, and promptly asked to copy Magnet's measurements Hmm Worse - having asked specifically for as many drawers in the lower cupboards as poss (as opposed to cupboards) i was amazed to see the design came back with not one single drawer in the kitchen Confused Not even a cutlery drawer!

Next worst was Wickes. It was an outrageously expensive quote (in the 20k s) and the design guy was ... unusual. Very hard sell. Argumentative. Hard to describe in fact .They'd actually heard of him in Magnet in fact and knew exactly who i was on about!

Magnet, nice. Cheapest so far. (awaiting DIY still)
Both independent guys were v.nice. Pricier than Magnet, less than Wickes.

With regards to rejigging kitchen could you post a drawing?

FoolsAssassin yes we've noticed a rise in material prices. Luckily the major work is mostly behind us now, but we still have a lot to do. Interesting about the ceramic sink ... thank you.

@humansare
I'd love to know what floor tiles you have please. The white ones with sparkly bits. They sound nice.
Could you do a link please ?

Laiste · 12/05/2021 09:59

Still waiting on a quote from DIY. They sent me a message last night saying can i send the magnet quote and price list. I did on Monday! Confused I've sent it again on their message system and in an email.

Just came across this post (about to re do kitchen) & looking for a worktop with some copper in but struggling. Would you mind sending a link or name for the one you're getting. Apologies if you've mentioned this in the rest of the post, only read the first one so off to catch up for tips!
FinallyHere · 12/05/2021 11:46

I love the look for copper but think that it really needs a dark colour for the cabinet doors in order to show to advantage. That in turns needs quite a large airy space in Ofer to jot look claustrophobic

Laiste · 12/05/2021 12:02

@4forkssake yep, the quartz i was going to have is a big vein quartz called calacatta lux. I got my sample form Algarve Granite.

This link is for a website that sells it in a tile form which i know is not what you want but it has really good images of the pattern and colour:

OP posts:
Laiste · 12/05/2021 12:04

@FinallyHere i agree completely. Navy cabinets and brass/copper with wood floor is what i think i've settled on. Which means ditching the calacatta (above) and going for a very clean white quartz with just a subtle pattern.

Part of my panic is about enough light bouncing around with a navy kitchen and i think the quartz will help.

LIVE UPDATE SHOCK

Just got the DIY quote through ....

5 k ??????!

ShockShock

I haven't been through the list yet. I'm imagining half of it's missing??

Bare in mind i've had quotes up to 24k ....

I will check through it properly after lunch.

OP posts:
Mistressinthetulips · 12/05/2021 12:14

24k must have included all the fitting though?

Laiste · 12/05/2021 12:15

That's WITH delivery btw !!

OP posts:
Laiste · 12/05/2021 12:16

The 24k included a 1.5k fitting ..... you're right. But still ... there has to be a mistake here surely?

OP posts:
Laiste · 12/05/2021 12:18

And 3k worth of appliances ...

OP posts:
Chasingsquirrels · 12/05/2021 13:03

Mine was about £4.5k 18 months ago, compared to Wickes approx £12k inc fitting.
I paid around £4k for fitting, electric, plumbing and tiling. Plus £250 for tiles.
Flooring was separate.

Laiste · 12/05/2021 13:17

Ah, my fitting quotes are always cheap(ish) because we only need a 'dry fit', which is carpentry only. (Doing our own flooring and tiling and got plumber, plasterer and sparky separate.)

Going though the quote - they've quoted me on a cheap cabinet in white and left off the walk in larder. The walk in larder is 1k. So it will go up about 2k by the time i've gone through it all i recon.

BUT i can't see it going up by another 5k - which it would have to to get as high as magnet ...

OP posts:
Laiste · 12/05/2021 13:20

Looks like we're saving apx 4k on magnet then altogether. Which is FAB GrinGrin

Samples coming of these two tiles for splash back behind hob (under chimney breast). Same pattern opposite colourway.

Sample coming of a fairly plain white carrera quartz as well.

Will put them all together with door and floor when they get here.
