Has anyone regretted getting a white kitchen floor? Has anyone regretted anything they chose for their kitchen actually?

Basically i can't chose what i want in my kitchen and it's driving me insane!

I think i've chosen a quartz worktop (calacatta with a thin additional vein of copper in it) and i think i've chosen a magnet cabinet style (tatton) but for life of me i don't know what colour to chose for the floor and to be honest can't chose the colour of the cabinets either!

If i go with a white floor to echo the quartz will i regret it? At least white/white means the cabinet colour will be easier to chose? No?

Heeeeeelp Grin

We chose a white tiled floor for our utility room, never again!

Laiste · 07/05/2021 18:05

@ConcernedAuntie in your opinion is granite more high shine than quartz?

Personally i've veered away from looking at granite with a view to buy because it's a bit pricier than quartz and i've heard you have to be a bit careful re: stains. (DH is NOT careful) But i think the ones i've seen in my travels have been quite high gloss.

@papooshka :( my thread is littered with so many posters stuck with white floors they wish they hadn't got!

Our downstairs loo is white tiles. Installed loo and did flooring about 3 weeks ago, loo actually in use for a week now. Loved it at first. Now i keep walking past about 10 minutes after mopping and seeing random bits on it Confused I'm so not having a white kitchen floor.

Still trying to get a quote from DIY. They are communicating but it takes a while and i think someone is going to work on the quote today. They're really busy apparently. (lots of MNers going there? Grin)

My sample of cashmere has come.
Cashmere door, plus worktop, plus flooring (if i stick with our wood) looks like this

I think a lot of the white floor issue depends on whether you wear shoes indoors. My house is a “no shoe zone”.

Laiste · 10/05/2021 12:46

I find myself swinging back towards navy though ... (i know i know) and have ordered a sample of the Stanbury door in cobham blue, dove grey and carbon. This is their cobham blue.

www.google.com/search?q=diy+kitchens+cobham+blue&sxsrf=ALeKk015rj1687SbaGK-YfkCDKvJfMkM_Q:1620646979414&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjvj468hL_wAhVhTRUIHRmfDf0Q_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1238&bih=725

Maybe i could do a navy island and the rest in cashmere or grey ....

I do feel as if i'm moving slowly towards a decision now GrinGrin

I must share these with you: an hour and a half last night on a 'colour simulator' where you upload a photo of your kitchen and click on colours which it paints in automatically, resulted in these ...

Why it chose to make it look as it you've flung the paint across the floor i have no idea Grin The white is the starting pic (from magnet) and the pinkish is my attempt at cashmere and the last is 'smart' navy GrinGrin An hour and a half of my life i'll never get back.

I have a white marble effect tiled floor. I do have to clean it a lot but as the kitchen is small and dark the effect of space it gives is worth the effort. The marble pattern does hide some of the dirt!

DeePlume · 10/05/2021 13:05

I also have navy cabinets which I LOVE!! Def go with the navy

Laiste · 10/05/2021 13:18

I do love the navy.

The lovely brass effect handles. The brass pendant lights. The dark blue against the rich wood of the floor. The white stone worktops and ceramic tile splashbacks really pop. sigh.

Really enjoying reading this thread whilst psyching myself up to start kitchen planning/shopping... I've only just regrouped after having the bathroom done last year! 😆

Love the colour combo in your 12.41 post, OP. I am thinking of having cashmere, and tempted to have LVT flooring rather than tiles.

Mind you, your blue kitchen suggestions sound beautiful too.

The only stipulation I have is flat doors - the framed styles look gorgeous (it's what I currently have) but am fed up at how much of a dust/grease trap they are.
I'm all about the ease of keeping it clean these days!

We'll be going mid-range on the price; our bathroom spiralled - thanks DH 🙄 and lovely as it is, I can't get over how much it cost for such a small room! 😆

Will continue to follow!

Chasingsquirrels · 10/05/2021 22:18

Ohh exciting horsemad

Horsemad · 10/05/2021 22:20

Haha, yep. I am going to do most of the planning myself this time as DH is waaay too extravagant!

TokyoSushi · 10/05/2021 22:23

Not RTFT and hopefully not too late but do NOT, under any circumstances, get a white kitchen floor!

We have one of those high gloss ones (here when we moved in) it's like a mirror and filthy even if you cleaned it 30 times per day, awful!!

Horsemad · 10/05/2021 22:25

This LVT stuff - does cat sick clean up well off it? 🤔

I can't comment on cat sick, but when someone forgot to let the dog out and the robovac got under the thick curtain (which had previously defeated it) and I came down to a dog poo smeared conservatory .... it cleared up off the LVT a lot easier than than robovac itself.
MysteriousMonkey · 10/05/2021 22:37

My lovely black tiled kitchen floor was a huge mistake. Shows everything and always looks dirty!

Horsemad · 11/05/2021 06:53

😳 Chasing

LittleCatDog · 11/05/2021 08:41

I had a black kitchen floor once and it drove me mad, showing every spec of everything. I really hated it. The best floor I had was engineered oak, had that with a white kitchen and it looked great. I think anything with a pattern is good, your design looks lovely!

Anjo2011 · 11/05/2021 08:51

Had a new kitchen last month , complete renovation. We went through a local company who project managed it. If you can get samples of the door, quartz to take home then do. Ours are stone coloured units which are a cashmere colour we have a light coloured quartz worktop with a grey ‘fog’ running through. We chose Amtico flooring which is a luxury vinyl, and also converted from gas to induction. No regrets on any of it, the hardest bit was choosing the paint colour ! Xx

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 11/05/2021 09:01

Not a decision we made, but we bought a house that was built in the 70s and the kitchen has black terrazzo tiles with brown and white chips. It's absolutely impossible to find anything you drop, and no matter how many times you sweep, you can never quite fully believe that it's not hiding all sorts of bits of dropped food. DD once spilled half a box of cornflakes on it and I didn't see them till I started walking across them. It's the worst floor I've ever seen.

SwimBaby · 11/05/2021 10:49

I have this kitchen apart from all my kitchen units are the lighter colour. I chose it 8 years ago and still love it.

Laiste · 11/05/2021 11:08

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername ''It's absolutely impossible to find anything you drop''.

This made me chuckle. We have a big rug in the living room which is like this. No one can see anything that lands on it - even the cats! (I don't mean we can't see the cats, i mean If one of their toys lands there they just wander off because it's become invisible to them) Oh and - invisible blinkin' Lego = OW!

I am so glad there are still folks interested in the thread btw! Flowers to all of you.

I thought it had run it's course interest wise (like threads do) but i have still so much to agonise over and i'm enjoying seeing other peoples kitchens and opinions so much. Stay with me :)

@Horsemad The cashmere is a fascinating colour. We thought the DIY one was going to be a bit pinker than it is in the flesh. Definitely get samples and definitely wander about with them/keep them out where you can see them during the day/evening. See them in the sun. See them in the gloom. See them in the electric light. Look at them in the room they're intended for.

So today i am thinking i really might go with navy. It's my first love from back in 2018 when i walked into a Wickes and saw one and did an involuntary out loud comedy gasp Grin I've spent the last 3 years trying to put myself off because navy Is.Scary.
I'm trawling through loads of old mumsnet threads (everything in the world has been reviewed by mumsnet at some point if you google it) and issues thrown up about navy are:

  • Check about cabinet/carcass colour - does white peep through anywhere between doors ect and ruin the look? Does DIY do a navy carcass? Would i want my insides of cupboards to be navy?
  • Will tall navy cupboards make the room look like a cave?
  • Is it a proper navy? (waiting for sample)
  • will i get sick of it?
  • will DH really actually strangle me if i want to re-paint it in 2 years?
  • and the big new one ... WHICH SINK.
I have neglected to stress about the sink! I was going with a big ol' basic drop in stainless steel one, but then I thought of it in the night -

A white quartz worktop over a navy kitchen with all brass effect handles and lighting ect ... and ... a silver sink and silver taps??? Shock no!

White sink, 'brass' colour tap surely?

Mumsnet google (Wink) says white composite sinks stain easily :(
Ceramic sinks .... pans mark them and glasses break easily.
What then?

One of my older DDs sent me a link to the Absolutely Fabulous episode (Door Handle) which has Eddie going to new york to take a photo of a door handle for inspiration for her new kitchen. She said 'this is you Mum':

''Well darling i want modern, but not what modern is you know post modern or what it IS just new! I want what it will be ! That thing at the dentist that little bowl!! That's the look i want. The bowl. Ultra modern spittoon!!''

''Have you any idea how difficult this is!?!''
