What can I take/do to have no periods at all

Hi

Posting here for traffic.

I have really heavy periods and have done since having dc 5 years ago. I’ve had enough. The heavy bleeding means I can’t go too far from the house for days and I have short cycles so don’t really get much of a break in between them either.

It’s not just the bleeding though. I get terrible headaches for 2 days before and during I’m just a mess and feel like I can’t function properly or deal with anything. It takes a massive effort to get up in the morning, I can’t make even the smallest decision and keep forgetting things. I have recently been promoted at work to a job I’m delighted with but involves some responsibility. The first few weeks went great, today didn’t, I felt like I couldn’t handle it and I know by the end of the week I will be ok again. If I explain this to my boss it will sound a bit unbelievable I think so I need a solution.

I have been on various different pills before before and after dc but after dc couldn’t get on with them. Other than a hysterectomy which is a bit drastic what are my other options.

I cannot see or speak to my gp as it’s not an ‘emergency’

I'm on the mini pill and haven't had a period in four years. It's great!

Singlenotsingle · 26/04/2021 17:17

As you say, a hysterectomy is a bit drastic, but it's the obvious solution. You don't say how old you are, but if you're coming up to menopause, that might be the reason for the heavy periods. I know when I got to 46, mine were very heavy and my gp put me back on the pill.

MrsDThomas · 26/04/2021 17:18

Mini pill here too. I asked and i got. Took about 6 months for my body to settle in to it. Cant remember when i last bled🎉

Mirena coil, haven’t had a period for years.

chittychittybang · 26/04/2021 17:19

Mirena coil. It gradually lightened my periods until I got none at all.

aliensprig · 26/04/2021 17:20

A friend of mine has the implant and she hasn't had a period in 2 years.

9ofpentangles · 26/04/2021 17:20

Antidepressants can help some people with the mood issues

cathyandclare · 26/04/2021 17:21

Another one recommending the mirena.

SmallestInTheClass · 26/04/2021 17:21

Mirena coil. I was also suffering with short cycle and long, heavy periods. I get just very light spotting now, or nothing at at all. It hasn't cured the monthly headaches that I get though.

Houseofvelour · 26/04/2021 17:22

I'm due to have the mirena coil soon as I have tsunami periods but if that doesn't work, my next step is private hysterectomy

SirenSays · 26/04/2021 17:23

It's not for everyone but I got the implanon. Sometimes I'll have spotting but I can take The pill for a couple of days and it goes away. I've had very few periods over the years.

minniemomo · 26/04/2021 17:23

Mirena after 4 months no periods

ittakes2 · 26/04/2021 17:24

acupuncture solved my issues in about 6 sessions

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/04/2021 17:24

Depo injection. If it suits you it is superb, no periods and sorted my period headaches too. Nightmare to get off of though. Takes a very long time to get out of your system so I would treat it as a semi permanent alternative to sterilisation. I wouldn't use it if my family wasnt finished. All that said it's been perfect for me I've had two coils fail, one very dramatically and painfully, and dont get on with the Pill. Depo suits me down to the ground

Chatanooga1 · 26/04/2021 17:25

Endometrial ablation if you don’t intend to have any or more children.

Mine worked perfectly and I never had a period ever again.

RuleOfCat · 26/04/2021 17:26

I take a progesterone-only pill specifically to stop my bleeding, which went totally haywire in late peri-menopause. It's brilliant, not a hint of a bleed since I started it and (approved by my gynecologist) I don't intend stopping it until my menopause proper has started. Important to note that it's NOT a contraceptive, which is perfect for me, don't need one. No side effects at all (which I always got with anything containing oestrogen) and in fact it's also stopped my hot flushes.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 26/04/2021 17:26

Sounds like your HB is in your boots.
You need a blood test.

And then take the combined pill back to back.

I'm a sufferer as well. I feel your pain.

TokyoSushi · 26/04/2021 17:27

I've been on the mini pill about 4 months, everything is very light and almost fizzling out now!

Before that they were super heavy and totally unpredictable!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 26/04/2021 17:28

Sorry I missed your last bit.

I also don't get on with the pill.

I do take low level citalopram though for the horrific PMT

Anonmousse · 26/04/2021 17:30

After reading this I'm going to look into the Mirena coil. My periods are really heavy and my last cycle was 15 days!!Confused so I got barely any time off!

BearGum · 26/04/2021 17:31

Mirena IUS.
I bled / spotted for a few months but nothing compared to the huge clots I was passing before. Then after about 6 months my periods went away. That was 9 years ago. It's not perfect; I've got a lot hairier since I started with it, but the period thing is amazing.

GreenSlide · 26/04/2021 17:32

This is exactly what the Mirena coil is good for.

dementedpixie · 26/04/2021 17:32

Depo made me bleed Mini pill and then mirena coil both stopped my periods
Seafog · 26/04/2021 17:35

I had an endometrial ablation, as the pp said, no periods since, for me , since 2013.
I don't want the coil as I was worried about breakthrough bleeding, possible scarring, or fighting to get it taken out if it wasn't the right option for me.

NFLwidow · 26/04/2021 17:36

I was in a similar situation and had endometrial ablation however this may only be suitable
If you don’t want children. I had it 3 years ago and it’s totally changed my life.
