What can I take/do to have no periods at all

Hi

Posting here for traffic.

I have really heavy periods and have done since having dc 5 years ago. I’ve had enough. The heavy bleeding means I can’t go too far from the house for days and I have short cycles so don’t really get much of a break in between them either.

It’s not just the bleeding though. I get terrible headaches for 2 days before and during I’m just a mess and feel like I can’t function properly or deal with anything. It takes a massive effort to get up in the morning, I can’t make even the smallest decision and keep forgetting things. I have recently been promoted at work to a job I’m delighted with but involves some responsibility. The first few weeks went great, today didn’t, I felt like I couldn’t handle it and I know by the end of the week I will be ok again. If I explain this to my boss it will sound a bit unbelievable I think so I need a solution.

I have been on various different pills before before and after dc but after dc couldn’t get on with them. Other than a hysterectomy which is a bit drastic what are my other options.

I cannot see or speak to my gp as it’s not an ‘emergency’

Contact your GP and ask to be referred for a uterine ablation. I got mine as an outpatient with no general anaesthetic and it’s totally changed my life. Early days, so I don’t want to tempt fate, but no periods since.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/04/2021 17:38

Depo stopped my periods for the 15 years I used it. They took a year to come back when I stopped the Depo but I am in my 50s so wasn't sure if they'd come back at all. They are still very very light.

WouldBeGood · 26/04/2021 17:38

@Chatanooga1

Endometrial ablation if you don’t intend to have any or more children.

Mine worked perfectly and I never had a period ever again.

@Chatanooga1 I’m so happy to hear this!

Not sure why you quoted me there. If were playing the bad contraception top trumps: My ex pulled my coil out with his penis during sex, blood everywhere and epic pain.....

Different strokes for different folks

Auldspinster · 26/04/2021 17:41

I had a hysterscopic resection of my endometrium 2.5 years ago - I was supposed to have an endometrial ablation but I had a large fibroid so the opted for the former. Gave me my life back and I've barely had a period since.

FinallyHere · 26/04/2021 17:46

I used the implant in its different guises from early '90's when it first came out for some twenty or so years. In all that time I used less than one box of mini lilets plus very occasional spotting, less than one sheet loo roll's worth at a time.

As PP mentioned, it's not for everyone but it was brilliant for me. Suited me much better than the combined pill and than the mini pill, though for months I would wake up in terror that I hadn't taken my pill.

ElaborateSalad · 26/04/2021 17:47

The Mirena coil has virtually stopped mine. Took about a year to settle down though, and it does nothing to stop my dreadful PMT

HoxtonBonnet · 26/04/2021 17:51

I had an endometrial resection in the summer, which is similar to an ablation. It was supposed to help with both bleeding and pain. The mirena/mini pill didn't work for me - terrible moods and spots. I have had no bleeding since the procedure, but a lot of period pain. My gynaecologist says he thinks this is because I probably have adenomyosis and/or endometriosis. He says there is no way of telling without doing an operation. I am pretty much stuck with dealing with the pain and possibly having a hysterectomy further down the line. I'm 45.

HoxtonBonnet · 26/04/2021 17:57

Ps - definitely get your iron levels checked out, it would almost certainly explain low energy and forgetfulness.

emmathedilemma · 26/04/2021 18:03

I would say that you first need investigating for the cause of the heavy bleeding (if there is one) at that might affect that treatment options are available to you.
The first line of attack from your GP would normally be tranexamic acid and then they like to promote the pill and particularly the mirena. I tried all of those and still had flooding on bad days. I had my fibroids treated and still the bleeding was quite heavy. I'm currently trying the mini-pill and have just had my first period which was lighter than normal but I'm still spotting on day 9 and usually have a 25 day cycle so it's not exactly filling me with joy thus far. My next line of attack will probably be an ablation with my gynae is willing to do - I think he's agree to a hysterectomy if I asked (it was in his list of options) but I really don't want to be dealing with the recovery time as they probably wouldn't be able to do mine keyhole due to the fibroids and freak size of my womb.
Why can you not even speak to your GP? Surely they aren't still using Covid as an excuse? If it was an emergency you'd be going to A&E.

Mini pill here - I haven’t had a period for over 10 years

Kljnmw3459 · 26/04/2021 18:10

some of my friends have done well with the implant and haven't had any periods. But since I took it, my periods got heavier and much much longer.... I feel like I've had periods for the past 800 days in a row!! it's such a pain, can't relax or do anything.

2bazookas · 26/04/2021 18:22

Pick up the phone FGS!

You don't need an emergency to see or speak to your GP. Any health issue that's affecting your daily life merits attention.

MrsWildermac · 26/04/2021 18:25

Start by looking into why you have such heavy periods. I was fobbed off for years until one night I haemorrhaged so badly that I nearly passed out. HB was really low and finally spoke to a lovely GP who sent me for a scan. Discovered I have a fibroid the size of a melon!

LalalalalalaLand123 · 26/04/2021 18:32

Mini pill - no periods ever, it's amazing!

MrsNewtS · 26/04/2021 18:37

Another vote for mirena. I had awful periods before and they completely stopped. I’ve just had my second one put in. It’s a bit uncomfortable having it done but not awful.

Wide · 26/04/2021 18:39

Mini pill, cerazette is one of them. I didnt want periods as my pmt was so bad it changed my life

CormoranStrike · 26/04/2021 18:49

More a coil works for me; implant works for my daughter.

SingingSands · 26/04/2021 18:59

Cerazette completely stopped my periods for 4 years. It was fantastic.

But, don't be put off by your GP practice. You need to see a GP, so push for an appointment. Even if it's a phone consult at first. I've had that recently for some gynae stuff and it was great - phone consult was excellent because I'd written a bullet point list to discuss regarding my problem and GP then invited me to the surgery for a blood test and examination after our discussion.

Good luck OP.

AdaFuckingShelby · 26/04/2021 19:03

I love my mirena. On my second one, no periods for 7 years. And you don't have to take any tablets. I had spots for 6 months at first but other than that no side effects. Get yourself one you won't regret it.

Tronkmanton · 26/04/2021 19:04

Mini pill. Got to give it a few months but no periods & best of all no migraines- life changing.

moofolk · 26/04/2021 19:10

Merina coil

JackieTheFart · 26/04/2021 19:13

I had the mirena.

Just a warning that I never stopped bleeding and as it came to the end of its ‘life’ I was bleeding two weeks on two weeks off and it was too light for a tampon.

britnay · 26/04/2021 19:19

Have you had a blood test?
I had very heavy periods and low irons levels. After supplementing with iron tablets my periods have actually gotten lighter.

KRoo22 · 26/04/2021 19:27

Another vote for Mirena coil, I tried the implant previously and didn’t get on well with it but had the coil fitted after DS2, no periods since 6-8 weeks after fitting. I had heavy ones previously too.
