What can I take/do to have no periods at all

Hi

Posting here for traffic.

I have really heavy periods and have done since having dc 5 years ago. I’ve had enough. The heavy bleeding means I can’t go too far from the house for days and I have short cycles so don’t really get much of a break in between them either.

It’s not just the bleeding though. I get terrible headaches for 2 days before and during I’m just a mess and feel like I can’t function properly or deal with anything. It takes a massive effort to get up in the morning, I can’t make even the smallest decision and keep forgetting things. I have recently been promoted at work to a job I’m delighted with but involves some responsibility. The first few weeks went great, today didn’t, I felt like I couldn’t handle it and I know by the end of the week I will be ok again. If I explain this to my boss it will sound a bit unbelievable I think so I need a solution.

I have been on various different pills before before and after dc but after dc couldn’t get on with them. Other than a hysterectomy which is a bit drastic what are my other options.

I cannot see or speak to my gp as it’s not an ‘emergency’

Acupuncture regulated, lightened and shortened my periods. £50-60 a session with my local acupuncturist. Well worth it as I didn’t want hormonal treatment or a coil.

@9ofpentangles

Antidepressants can help some people with the mood issues
Ah yes, the universal panacea to be prescribed for all menstrual problems - treat the symptom and not the cause.
Fulloffalafel · 26/04/2021 19:33

@ittakes2

acupuncture solved my issues in about 6 sessions
Can I ask for more info on this? How did you find someone to do it? Would any acupuncturist do it, or do they specialise in different things?

I have the depo and very rarely have periods. I usually have two a year when extremely tired so Christmas and usually in July as it is the end of the school year.

I had the implant but bled a lot.

To be honest they seem to be different for everyone so maybe get medical advice and have a monitored process of trying things out. The only downside is GPs do like the longer term contraception so coils and implants may be difficult to change if they don't suit. I had to have my implant removed privately as my GP didn't want to do it until it was due to be removed.

We can all tell our stories but we are not you so maybe have a discussion with a GP you trust and discuss the options.

Blackopal · 26/04/2021 19:38

Interesting to hear how many people have happy with Mirena coil, I had written them off as mine made no difference to bleeding.

Op, you need a blood test, you sound similiar to me. I had a blood test and ended up in hospital receiving four blood transfusions as I was so I'll with aenemia. Mine was caused by huge fibroid and I have now had a hysterectomy.

You should not be living with this. There may be a very fixable cause. Your HB levels may be as low as mine were and that is an emergency.

Vargas · 26/04/2021 19:39

Mirena - I'm on my third one, love it. No periods.

Or have another dc? Drastic, but will work for 9 months! Grin

Vargas · 26/04/2021 19:40

And if you can, find another GP! They should be helping you with this.

RedSquirrelRoar · 26/04/2021 19:54

Mini pill did the job for me - a few months of irregular periods and then settled into none at all for years. Killed libido a bit for me though.

AnotherEmma · 26/04/2021 20:04

I agree with PPs who urge you to talk to GP and insist on blood tests and possible further investigation.

I would recommend a hormonal coil, Mirena is the most common one but there is also Kyleena which is newer, smaller and has a lower dose of hormones (but still effective for 5 years). Happy with mine so far (had it 3 months).

Chocolatecakes · 26/04/2021 20:40

Thank you everyone for your kind words and for sharing. Yes you are all right I do need to at least speak to my gp and will telephone again tomorrow and insist. For those who asked I am early 30’s so I don’t think it’s menopause.

I used the Evra Patch. Worked really well for about three / four years normal length fairly light periods. Then the adhesive started irritating my skin. I've since had my second implant- had one before the patch. First year fine second year continously bleeding, mainly fairly light and cramps. I'm going to try the patch again next as it really suited me the first time.

BagORats · 26/04/2021 21:22

I haven't had a period for a couple of years with my implant. It took some time to settle down and I had one weird experience with a sudden rush after a plane journey but apart from that nothing

tibni · 26/04/2021 21:48

GP can prescribe a few medications that should manage bleeding.
Just be aware the covid situation is limiting access to treatment. I was referred via cancer pathway and had biopsies for excessive bleeding, large fibroids found but I have to live with them as not malignant and routine removal isn't currently being undertaken. Ablation / hysterectomy only where unavoidable and
Consultant did fit mirena coil following biopsies which has really helped the bleeding.

WouldBeGood · 26/04/2021 21:57

I went private for a consult as my investigations were put on hold “cos Covid.” She then referred me back in to the NHS and everything went super smoothly then with her overseeing it. I am so grateful.

I couldn’t do hormones and none of the other
Meds really helped.

Cherrysoup · 26/04/2021 22:12

I stil had periods with the mirena.

I’m now on the progesterone only pill, mine is Desorex, zero symptoms or bleeding. Bliss!

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/04/2021 22:21

What does yr Dr suggest? Mirena is usually very effective so well worth a try. Progesterone only pill/ implant/ conttraceptive injection can work and are worth a try but mirena is usually worth trying imo.

Springsnake · 26/04/2021 22:28

Destrogel ,mini pill
Wonderful

coogee · 26/04/2021 22:32

The only thing that worked for me was the Depo. Unfortunately, you can only stay on it for a limited time.

The Mirena and the implant had/have no effect.

emmathedilemma · 26/04/2021 22:33

I had worst bleeding with the mirena than I had before! So bad that it eventually bled itself out.

Llamadramasheepface · 26/04/2021 22:37

I'm mid 30's. Had awful periods. Pretty much bled 3 weeks out of 4 and when I say bled I mean bled. Tried pill but didn't want to carry on with it due to some breast lumps (benign), tried coil and it slipped and got stuck in my cervix, tried ablation and it failed so had a hysterectomy last year. Absolutely an extreme thing to do but totally worth it. Don't let age put you off If you already have dc etc.

Needmorechocolate · 26/04/2021 22:37

Yep agree with others, get GP appointment. I’d be asking for bloods to check for anaemia as a first check and then ultrasound to check for polyps/fibroids etc. Tranexamic acid can help to reduce the flooding (life changer for me as an instant fix). Personally I’ve now had polyps removed and mirena coil fitted - still settling down (about 7mths in) but so much better than the flooding I had before!

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 26/04/2021 22:37

I used to be like you - from the age of 11 my periods were evil, so heavy and painful and large clots.

My doctor at the time essentially just shrugged and said it was part of being female and did nothing.

After a shit-tonne of other crap from him we left and moved to another doctors. Within 6 weeks of being at the doctors I was on medication (3 different sorts for the pain and to reduce the bleeding) and on the waiting list (for all of a fortnight!) to have a mirena coil inserted.

I had the coil and it didn't take them away sadly but it DID lessen the flow. However I didn't get on with the extra oestrogen and after 18m I removed it myself (not the most pleasant thing I've ever done) because I couldn't get into the doctors to have it. Literally within the same day I was not angry at the world and didn't snap and snarl at people for breathing.

After that I continued with the medication that was to reduce the pain and bleeding and it was 'managable' but still not pleasant.

Then I got given another medication that caused my periods to come essentially every other week and I was exhausted and wiped out from the sheer amount and the pain that the medicine did help but not enough.

Then I got given the progesterone pill within three months my periods had stopped finally for good and I've been on it approx 2 years now and I haven't had a period since. I do occasionally have the odd bit of not spotting and not even discharge but a day of like fishing line thin tiny tiny clots every so often that a panty liner can deal with (not every month) but there's been nothing blood wise and other than the odd tummy ache sort of every three what-would-be-periods (if that!) for an hour or two there's nothing else! thank god!

Hope that helps :) It might be a case of you having to try a few combinations of pills/coils etc to find what works for you.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 26/04/2021 22:38

Sorry should have said - the meds were transexamic acid, naproxen and 30/500mg cocodamol

boon · 26/04/2021 23:02

A gynae put me on combined pill 2 packs bk to bk then a break = no periods. Now Im on progesterone only = no periods 🙂

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/04/2021 23:05

@coogee

The Mirena and the implant had/have no effect.

What is the limited time?

I was on it for 15 years and only stopped because I wanted to see if I am menopausal. I got regular bone density scans when I was on it.
