What can I take/do to have no periods at all

Hi

Posting here for traffic.

I have really heavy periods and have done since having dc 5 years ago. I’ve had enough. The heavy bleeding means I can’t go too far from the house for days and I have short cycles so don’t really get much of a break in between them either.

It’s not just the bleeding though. I get terrible headaches for 2 days before and during I’m just a mess and feel like I can’t function properly or deal with anything. It takes a massive effort to get up in the morning, I can’t make even the smallest decision and keep forgetting things. I have recently been promoted at work to a job I’m delighted with but involves some responsibility. The first few weeks went great, today didn’t, I felt like I couldn’t handle it and I know by the end of the week I will be ok again. If I explain this to my boss it will sound a bit unbelievable I think so I need a solution.

I have been on various different pills before before and after dc but after dc couldn’t get on with them. Other than a hysterectomy which is a bit drastic what are my other options.

I cannot see or speak to my gp as it’s not an ‘emergency’

What is the limited time?

It's more of an issue with younger women.

The contraceptive injection Depo Provera can increase your risk of osteoporosis and broken bones.

Sorry, the time was 2 years. I managed to get 4 but that was it. Despite my best efforts.

Mirena. Love it. Can't believe I listened to all the negative stories and didn't get one earlier.

You were unlucky considering that link you posted says...

More recent advice however from The World Health Organisation (WHO) 2007 recommends that there should not be any restriction on the use of Depo Provera if you are aged between 18 and 45 nor on the length of time you can use it (if you are eligible to use this method).

Mirena coil. Had it fitted to control my endometriosis, haven't had a period in years. In fact, I'm on my second Mirena. Can't sing its praises loud enough.

Yes. I moved and I couldn't get it at my new surgery either. My weight is at the lower end of the healthy BMI range which could be a reason. I might try again.

Another vote for depo.

I didn't go on it for years as I was told it can make periods worse and you are stuck with that for 3 months.

I wish I'd done it earlier.

I have been using the implant since the late 90s. Have taken breaks to have 4 children but have always gone back to it.
Since my early 20s I have not had a period without choosing to do so.

ApplePenPineapplePen · 27/04/2021 08:48

Another vote for endometrial ablation if you don't want any more children and ideally your DH/DP to get vasectomy to drastically reduce the risk as it can be dangerous for you to get pregnant after ablation. A 6 year soul-sapping, life-limiting problem resolved 1 month afterwards. Relief!

blissfulllife · 27/04/2021 08:49

I can't tell you how much my periods hindered my life. I'd completed my family so I had an endometrial ablation. Done in hospital under local anaesthetic. It was bloody painful but only as bad as the horrendous period pains I was getting. I've been period free ever since (4years) fantastic x

If you're having trouble getting hold of your GP (very common issue at the moment!) then try your sexual health clinic if you want to try one of the contraceptive methods like the Mirena. They are a lot easier to contact generally.

Insist on doc appointment this is drastically affecting your life and ability to do your job
Why do we struggle on and be stoic ?

nitsandwormsdodger · 27/04/2021 10:41

Blood test for iron and any other hormone issues
I know someone who had the implants to stop periods
