I survived Couch to 5k week 1, run 1!

After contemplating doing C25k for a whole year, today I completed run 1 and survived. Still cannot imagine being able to run for 30 minutes in 9 weeks time though.
About half way through I had some pain on my inner ankle of right foot and the instep of my left foot, not sure if it's down to inexperience or shoe related.

Welcome to the running club everyone! It is super addictive isn't it.

For those who may be interested, the 5km parkrun events are hopefully going to be starting up again in June. They're very inclusive, you don't have to run them at all you can mix walk/running or just walk, they're open to all from kids to people with dogs to speedy 'club runners' getting around in less than twenty minutes to jog-walkers getting around in 45 minutes. Some are in city parks, or on national trust sites, beaches, promenades and country parks. All free and volunteer-run. If you have a search on the website there's probably one near you.

@kiksta well done! I was the same, couldn’t believe I did 2 lots of 3 mins.
Just done the last run of week 4 and actually think I can do the first run of week 5 😀

kiksta · 11/05/2021 14:57

Thanks @Idontgiveagriffindamn!

This is the first time I've felt like I might actually complete the programme.

How have you found it so far?

Me too. I’ve always given up about week 3!
I found the first 2 weeks awful and was gasping for air but the last 2 weeks haven’t been too bad. I was struggling a bit today as the last minute was up a slight incline - it felt like a massive hill!

kiksta · 11/05/2021 18:27

But YOU DID IT!

Be proud Grin

KinseyWinsey · 16/05/2021 10:29

From week 6 it's just 25 run every time. I'd rather it was broken up into smaller runs until week 8 I just can't seem to get my fitness up to 25 mins this time. 😞

Haggisfish · 16/05/2021 11:22

Me either. I’m repeating week 4 with the five and then the ten minutes runs a few times. And I’m trying to push myself for an extra minute or two on the end. Don’t give up!

Offerdecisionneeded · 17/05/2021 21:36

How’s everyone doing?
Just did w4R1. Achilles really hurt setting off and slightly eased as the run went on. Bit worried I’m brewing tendonitis. Anyone else had the same? My trainers are cheap and crap so thinking I might go to a proper running shop at the weekend and upgrade.
I’m enjoying the challenge, really don’t want to bow out with an injury!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 17/05/2021 21:56

I’m going to do w5 run 3 tomorrow - 20 mins seems daunting. Can only do it at 6am or after 7pm so I’ll be half asleep either way.
I bought some decent running shoes this time and I’ve not noticed any pain as yet. In my previous pathetic attempts my hip always hurt so probably is worth investing in some.
Hope your ankle feels better before your next run

Offerdecisionneeded · 17/05/2021 22:44

Well done getting to week 5 - it looks savage!
Thanks. Just primed some insoles to hopefully get me to the weekend before I can get to a running shop.
Yeh, you’re the same as me, either run really early or really late running because of kids/work. Not ideal! I run alone and do worry a little about putting myself in a vulnerable position. Bought a rape alarm thingy and try not to have my music too high!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 18/05/2021 07:25

Just got back and managed to run for 20 mins. I’m so shocked and proud of myself.

Haggisfish · 18/05/2021 07:27

Yay! Well done-it’s a truly fabulous feeling isn’t it?!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 18/05/2021 14:03

Absolutely I feel amazing. Quite pumped up for the next run.
Hope everyone else is doing well

yorkyork · 21/05/2021 09:06

Hi - can I join please? I completed week 1 on the C25K app today and I am not a runner at all but I really got to do something! Just reading about it all the time doesn't cut it....

It was more shuffling/jogging rather than "running" but very happy I completed the three sessions. Sense of achievement! + makes me look forward to the next session.

Planning to do the runs on Mon, Wed and Fri...

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/05/2021 09:43

@yorkyork well done. I think the hardest thing for me was completing week 1 and carrying on into week 2. I found it really hard but it’s getting easier as the weeks get going.
Shuffling / jogging is fine - you’re moving!

DobbyIsAFreeElf · 21/05/2021 15:45

I started week 4 today and it felt good, for the first time. I was worried about the 5 minute runs but didn't find them an6 different to the 3 minute ones.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 21/05/2021 21:37

@DobbyIsAFreeElf well done! You’re doing brilliantly

yorkyork · 24/05/2021 03:37

@Idontgiveagriffindamn thank you!

I did W2R1 today!! (am living in Asia, hence the time of this message). I wanted to go a bit faster, but after run 1 and 2 I was now struggling for the remainder and found it harder to keep going. Need to pace myself - guess I learn as I go along. But I did complete it and that feels good!

yorkyork · 28/05/2021 08:07

Week 2 done!! Found it hard(er), the last two sessions, as if gravity just pulled me down and wouldn't let me move.
I have seen a number of ppl mentioning that W3 is quite a step up... so let's see how it goes next week!

How is everyone else going?

Offerdecisionneeded · 28/05/2021 08:23

Well done @yorkyork, think having the motivation to open the next week is one of hardest things.
I did w5r2 last night. Was quite a jump and looking ahead to the next run I just don’t and won’t believe it’s possible..!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 28/05/2021 08:26

@yorkyork well done on finishing week 2! I remember that one being a killer. I think week 3 although longer runs was somehow easier. So hopefully it will be for you as well.
I did my first run of week 7 yesterday. Never thought I’d ever manage to run (slow jog) for 25 mins but I did it. Won’t say I enjoyed it but I didn’t hate it as much as weeks 1 and 2.

yorkyork · 04/06/2021 05:43

@ Offerdecisionneeded and @Idontgiveagriffindamn, how did week 5 and 7 go....? Well done on getting so far already. I keep reminding myself that I will get there too!

I just completed week 3 this morning, and it wasn't too bad to be honest. Actually, I am more unsure now about next week. 5 minutes in one go.... That will be a personal record - the 3 minutes of this week already were! I like the build up of all of this though. I am actually going to work towards something!

@Idontgiveagriffindamn - do you have a plan for what to do after the 8 weeks....?

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 04/06/2021 06:27

Week 7 went ok. It was hard though but I managed it. Thought I’d track myself and see if I was on target for 5k in 30 mins but I’m not so that was disappointing.
Trying to drag myself out of bed to to day 1 of week 8 (28 mins) and I’m struggling.
Well done on running for 3 mins! That’s a brilliant achievement. It’s odd how somehow it’s not that bad. 5 mins although it’s a 2 min step up doesn’t feel like an extra 2 mins. You can do it!
@Offerdecisionneeded how did you get on with the 20 min run?

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 04/06/2021 08:26

I got up and ran for 28 mins!!! Didn’t think I would do it @yorkyork I’m glad you posted this morning.
After week 9 I’m going to try keep running and focus on doing 5k rather than stopping at 30 mins. I’ll probably be able to do it in 33/ 34 mins to start with.

Dazedandconfused10 · 04/06/2021 08:59

Just completed week 1 (again, I've completed the program before) can't wait to ramp up the runs again.
