I survived Couch to 5k week 1, run 1!

After contemplating doing C25k for a whole year, today I completed run 1 and survived. Still cannot imagine being able to run for 30 minutes in 9 weeks time though.
About half way through I had some pain on my inner ankle of right foot and the instep of my left foot, not sure if it's down to inexperience or shoe related.

I’ve just done week 2 day 2, thought if I didn’t do it first thing then I’d not do it.
I’ve realised if I don’t plan in when I’m doing it I make excuses about not having time. And I have my fave / most inspirational songs timed for the later runs to keep me going when I’m wanting to give up.

VenusStarr · 25/04/2021 09:14

Well done! I did my run 2 of week 3 yesterday. I think weeks one and two are harder, enjoying week 3.

I go first thing, otherwise I talk myself out of it. I am finding my calves are tight though, so I think I need to stretch more and drink more water before I go.

MrsCaptainJakeBallard · 25/04/2021 09:17

I know that it seems impossible to believe but I actually found it better once the runs were longer. I found the stop/starting harder on my legs whereas at them longer runs I settled in to a better pace.

Make sure you wear proper running shoes to protect joints and reduce risk of injury

RandomMess · 25/04/2021 12:58

My physio is a runner and says if you starting get notable pain give it a few days to recover and start back on the previous week.

altlife · 26/04/2021 10:17

@altlife

I've stopped and started many times I annoy myself 😫

I was contemplating restarting on Monday. Having read this post I think i just might!

(Although there is still one day in between..)

Keep going x

I did it Grin

Can I join in? I'm doing week 1, run 1 today. I'm a bit nervous about it.

It's normal to be nervous. But have a go, and you might find it's not so bad.

I did R1W1 today after a long few months and was surprised at how 'not difficult' I found it.

Even if you do find it hard, be proud that you're given it a go and keep at it. It will get easier x

This is just the thread I needed..! Downloaded the app over the weekend an in waiting for running leggings and top to arrive today.
Thanks for the positive stories, I’m half excited to give it a go now (and half still cba..)

73kittycat73 · 26/04/2021 11:51

Thank you altlife Smile I also replied to you on the other thread. Grin I appreciate your words of encouragement.
Good luck Offerdecisionneeded. Is this your first attempt too?

Offerdecisionneeded · 26/04/2021 12:58

@73kittycat73 Thankyou! Yep first timer here! I used to love the gym in my twenties but life got in the way in the last decade 😕

73kittycat73 · 26/04/2021 18:58

How did it go for you?
I got into a bit of a muddle. My mum and I share a 'phone and after I started I realised she had sleep mode set to under 10 seconds! I couldn't stop and change is as I wanted to carry on. I also didn't get any talking, saying when to run, etc, so kept having to look at the mobile and tap it to keep it awake. I've now set sleep mode to 30 minutes and tried loading the run again and this time she tells me when to run, etc. Now, onto the run itself...I managed the warm up and 7 run minutes. I'm very OK with that. Up until a few weeks ago I wasn't even walking outside (Agoraphobic.). I haven't exercised for a very, very long time, so I am pleased with what I've done so far. Looking forward (In a way! Grin ) for Wednesday. Felt quite good afterwards too.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 26/04/2021 19:20

You’ve just got to get the first one done. I was a mess with mine trying to time the warm up to get me down to the canal but didn’t make it and ended up having to run across a field and over at sty. But it doesn’t matter and you can regroup and focus on the next one.
@73kittycat73 have you planned when you’re doing your next one?

itssquidstella · 26/04/2021 19:23

Well done, OP! I did it back in 2011 or '12, never having run for more than about three minutes non-stop in my life before. I now run between 6 and 10km three or four times a week and have completed three half marathons. You can do it!

Haggisfish · 26/04/2021 19:36

I’m on week five and just ran for eight minutes-twice! Can’t believe I managed it. Keep going.

HugeAckmansWife · 26/04/2021 19:36

My phone sods up the app as well, not matter how I adjust the settings. What I do is look up the run at home, write the timings on my hand and use my watch to time the sections. Then when I get back, I fastforward through the run on the app so it logs it as complete. Pain in the arse but I used the app not working as an excuse to give up twice before so I've found this as a work-around. Also YY to getting proper shoes. they don't have to cost a lot but it makes the biggest difference to injury or not.

Planning w1r2 for tomorrow as had 2 day of achey legs and thought best to leave it until tomorrow. hopefully it will go as well as the first. I definitely need to learn how to run and breathe as I kept holding my breathe which obviously doesn't help!

Not the best technique but I find singing to the song I’m listening to me helps. Also seems to make the run bits go quicker. But I do need to learn actual breathing techniques. Hope the run tomorrow goes well

Well done OP! I did W1R1 yesterday, and planning to do W1R2 tomorrow. Can't decide if you get up early and do it before work, or to do it early evening after work. I'm very much not a morning person, but I quite like the idea of getting it done at the start of the day.

73kittycat73 · 26/04/2021 20:35

Hi Idontgiveagriffindamn I plan to go again on Wednesday, but the weather forecast says rain! I'll still go...

This bothered me too! In the end, as much as I hate getting up early to exercise, I hate running after having eaten in the day even more, so early mornings for me

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/04/2021 20:39

Well done. All I can say is I didn’t think I would make it through to week 9 and suddenly there I was at the end. You can do it. Have confidence in the program and you will get there. It feels great.

altlife · 26/04/2021 20:39

Does anyone know of a C25k app For iPhone which will play music via Spotify while in use?

misslomi · 26/04/2021 20:40

I've just started today! Has anyone lost weight or noticed any physical changes? Toning or less cellulite on the thighs? 😂
