Just watching Bones for the first time and absolutely gutted about Sweets which made me wonder which other tv deaths have upset MNers.

Lots of potential for spoilers here so apologies in advance.

Just also remembered Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall. Obviously I knew she was going to die but the way her execution was filmed and acted was terrifying. It really upset me.

I've seen a LOT of deaths of characters on TV shows in 68 years, but possibly the worst was Lt Col. Henry Blake in MASH. And we didn't even see his death. McLean Stevenson was the actor who played the part, and he didn't renew his contract. On his last show, Blake is going home after serving several years in Korea. He's talking about how excited he is to see his wife, gets a big send-off, everyone is so thrilled for him and, at the very end of the show, Radar O'Reilly comes into the operating tent and informs then that Col. Blake's plane has gone down with no survivors.

Stevenson had pissed off the producer so much when he didn't renew his contract that the producer had that end written secretly. NO ONE but that one writer knew about it, and they gave Gary Burghoff (Radar) the lines to read at the very last minute. Handed him the script, and said, "Go and read this." It was the first time ANYONE knew what the producer had done, except for the directory, who only knew a few minutes ahead of time. It was sneaky, and mean, and petty.

Sweets, on "Bones" got me, as well. So did Kate, on "NCIS."

Mark Greene in ER.

Todd in neighbours was sad at the time as was Shane in home and away.

YouCanStopNowThanks · 23/04/2021 19:43

The red wedding in GoT.

PrincessesRUs · 23/04/2021 19:44
@Yogaposer was Meg in Home and Away Blakes girlfriend? If so, I sobbed my heart out at that.
Gosh I remember this - did she die in his arms on the beach?

Peachypips78 · 23/04/2021 19:44

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 23/04/2021 19:44

Avril and Lawrence, How We Used to Live circa 1987.

I’m still not over it.

JennyBond · 23/04/2021 19:44

@Tupperwarelid

Nicola Walker’s character in Unforgotten a few weeks ago. Just didn’t see it coming.
Absolutely. And so similar to what’s her name in Cold Feet which I also found upsetting.
AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/04/2021 19:45

@PrincessesRUs Yes, that's what I was thinking too.

PrincessesRUs · 23/04/2021 19:45

@Disfordarkchocolate

Mark Greene - ER

Nothing beats Nigel in The Archers though, despite being on the radio.

Nigel - yes but even more John Archer with a tractor on him and Mark too

Oh and whenJosh's family all died on casualty in the 90s.
Was that a fire caused by an aerosol and he was working when the shout came in so heard the address?

Mrs Landingham in the West Wing.
And yes to Sweets on Bones. I have been a big Bones fan for years (I live in the US) and I found that such a sad episode.

The undercover anti corruption cop in Line of Duty who got his throat cut. [can't think of his name] For weeks I couldn't decide whether he had gone bad. Then he shows his hand by trying to rescue the imported girls and the one he thinks is going to help him is on the other side and he gets his throat cut. It was so sudden, so unexpected. Ryan, the one who is now a corrupt cop did it and the woman he thought was his friend stood mocking him while he was dying. I didn't watch the rest of that series.

felulageller · 23/04/2021 19:47

Omar in the wire.

I remember they were going to kill off Aidan in EastEnders but decided not to in case it spurred copycat suicides but it was still very sad.

Kerry getting shot on a duck shoot in Neighbours! Poor Joe Mangel.

PineappleSun · 23/04/2021 19:48

Seymour the dog in Futurama's Jurassic Bark.
