Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

Yes please @balaur! I'm working my way through the AO3 tag and loving it. notcaycepollard is my absolute fave writer so far.

QuestionableMouse · 20/04/2021 23:43

I've been reading Leverage fic lately and love the stuff by this person archiveofourown.org/users/Distracted/works

It's quite whump heavy but holy crap it's good fic.

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/04/2021 00:43

Did he pipe it himself? That would be hard without smudging it. Did Buffy help? I need to know now!

No it was in their Wolfram and Hart days - Spike went to the kitchens (W&H apparently have kitchens) and the W&H pastry chefs (W&H apparently have pastry chefs) "prepared" him. 😂 😂

Now as I recall - and remember I was reading this between my fingers - Angel believed he was going to some big wig clients dinner where he had to be the host. And so Wesley made him put on a tux and sent him down to ... Wolfram and Hart's ballroom? (W&H apparently have a ballroom) BUT IT WAS ALL A RUSE!

There was no dinner. Spike was just playing a sex game - he was the dinner - and the chefs wheeled him out and Angel licked him clean. I didn't make it past the champagne enema though so I can't tell you how it ended.

I believe this was not done in public but I think a fair amount of people inside W&H must have known it was going on.

@Icantreachthepretzels

That sounds like the plot to a porn film masquarading as a romantic comedy.

God it's great to be here!
Any theories on why women like reading m/m slash?
I do very much enjoy it but I don't know why. Also judging by how much of this glorious smut is online I'm far from alone.

Why shouldn't we, though? A lot of earnest academic ink gets spilled on slash and yaoi and why so many women enjoy m/m action and yet nobody ever seems to ask why men enjoy watching two women have sex beyond "It's hot". I don't see any reason why it needs to be complicated beyond "I like men, and two men are twice as hot as one". I mean, you can see a certain gender difference in that slash does often involve an emotional angle, but sometimes it's just straight up porn between characters who are very much not in love hatefucks are the hottest anyway and I like that too. I pretty much think women like reading slash for the same reason that gay men like watching gay porn. (And you do get the occasional male writer of slash.)
MintyCedric · 21/04/2021 11:06

I am so excited to find this thread and people talking openly about their love of fanfic...for so long it's been a little bit covert I think,especially among more...ahem...mature women.

I starting writing it 10/11 years ago on Wattpad, and after a long lapse started up again in 2019 when I discovered the Cormoran Strike books. I post on AO3 and have written around 350k words in total over several fics of varying length, a couple still unfinished.

I've lapsed in recent months due to hard-core family commitments and trying to focus on my own novel, but I do miss it!

One of my friends writes a lot of slash fic...she's a fantastic writer but it's not my thing.

Was surprised to discover how much I enjoy reading A/O/B fic though, albeit the tamer end of the spectrum Blush.

Fyredraca · 21/04/2021 11:16

@bunglebee you make a really good point there. I have read a few articles asking these questions but I can't say I identified with any of the conclusions.
Also yes no one does question men's like of women together.

@MintyCedric what is A/O/B?

MrsGulDukat · 21/04/2021 11:18

Slash isnt my thing either but I've read some brilliant ones.

I dont even think I could write slash and do it justice.

You;re going to regret asking this. Do not read at work

bunglebee · 21/04/2021 12:13

I... May have once written an Omegaverse mpreg story. It doesn't even have any sex in it. Blush

It's the most popular and successful thing I've ever written. By some way.

Fyredraca · 21/04/2021 12:28

Ha ha! Actually I had come across this but I'm not very up on the shorthand.
Not my bag. I prefer the ordinary kind of men having hot sex Grin
Each to her own

MintyCedric · 21/04/2021 12:45

Well tbf I don't read loads but there is one specific writer in the Strike fandom who has written a couple of AOBs that I love...it's very much humans with those traits, no-ones turning into werewolves or anything.

I avoided reading them until I ran out of 'normal' smut for months but when I did was hooked.

Fyredraca · 21/04/2021 13:11

I'm not judging, I've just read a story where George Warleggan was wearing lace knickers....
Noooo I'm in no position to judge

CornedBeef451 · 21/04/2021 13:44

@Icantreachthepretzels it's good they thought it through properly!

So the butt champagne, tentacles and incest definitely don't do it for me but I've read some beautiful Destiel fics that have left me with some new and unexpected feeling about wings.

I'm not entirely sure how to feel about that but I haven't stopped reading them yet!

CornedBeef451 · 21/04/2021 13:52

The A/O/B ones confuse me, I tend to stay away from them as I'm not entirely sure what's going on.

I think the m/m stuff is easier to read as any sex scene with a woman in I tend to nitpick and think, she's not ready yet, I don't think she's really enjoying that, who's going to clean up that mess. With m/m I can enjoy as two men having a lovely time together.

Also more realistic timeframes for arousal, men really can be aroused and get into it quickly but with f/m to read any further than a kiss I need to see a mutually respectful relationship and long foreplay and I've yet to find a fix that establishes the man does equal childcare and housework before they get down and dirty.

Maybe I should write my own that starts with a man giving the bathroom floor a really good mopping!

MrsGulDukat · 21/04/2021 14:03

@CornedBeef451

(Desperately searches through fics to see if I have given my female characters enough time to get errrrr......wet)

I did have a fic where the man gets home from work, sees his wife overwhelmed and sends her off for some quiet time while he wrangles 3 kids and cleans up the mess they made.

Is that enough?

CaviarAndCigarettes · 21/04/2021 14:41

@StillMedusa
This is the best HP fan fiction I have ever read. Enjoy!

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/04/2021 14:46

I write nice/ equal/ loving m/f relationships but I don't write smut. They start kissing and then we pretty much fade to black.

I think the problem is equal hetero relationships and smut are written in separate stories. A story that focuses on getting a good balance isn't going to have much in the way of hot and heavy scenes because that isn't what the story is about and isn't what the readers are looking for. There might be reference or even a full scene that shows they do have sex, but it's not going to suddenly turn NSFW. And conversely smut isn't going to have a 50/50 split of household chores because that's not what people are looking for when they go to smut.

But whereas in m/m no one is stopping to wonder who is cooking tea afterwards and so the reader can just dive straight into the good stuff, with f/m we do bring all this real world 'well hang on, is this actually good for her? does he respect her?' thoughts into it which means the smut isn't as enjoyable unless this stuff has been firmly established - but like I said, this stuff doesn't really have a place in a porn with plot story.

I think this is probably part of the reason why women write and enjoy m/m smut. Not just that obviously we find it as hot as men find 2 women together (why on earth wouldn't we? Confused) but because it comes with so much less baggage - the equality is inbuilt (or the inequality if it's A/B/O) so we don't have to think about it and can just enjoy the sex scene. And maybe equality is what we actually find really sexy.

MrsGulDukat · 21/04/2021 14:54

@Icantreachthepretzels

See, I do write smut.

Sometimes it can be smut that's been built up over time or smut that has been thrown at you right at the beginning and a relationship happens later in which more smut will appear.

I try to make it equal by giving the female partner some of the control.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 21/04/2021 14:58

I just write sex that I could see myself having and would be happy to have, really. I think f/m is easier than m/m penetrative sex in some ways, as you've got, you know, built-in facilitation. You can always spot the teens who haven't had much or any sex themselves writing slash which involves one man ramming himself into another in the space of about thirty seconds. (Ouch.)
