Inspired by another thread by HensTeeth44, here is a thread for lovers of fan fiction either writer or just an avid reader.

I do have some unfinished Harry Potter fan fic to share but I'm at working at the moment.

Dont be afraid to share your favourites.

FabulaRasa’s BatLantern fan fic is extraordinary. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in DCU or just M/M pork with plot.

MrsGulDukat · 20/04/2021 12:26

'Vore?

Jeez. I will never feel bad about anything I write in my fics again. Nice to know that I'm normal.

just M/M pork with plot.

Wait - is this a hilarious typo or is 'pork with plot' an actual tag on AO3? As in - thrusting pork swords with a bit of dialogue.

I think it says a lot about fan fiction that I'm really not sure. Confused Grin

Smile now I think about it, I'm also not sure if that was a typo for "porn" or if there's a separate "pork with plot" tag for m/m slash! Clearly there SHOULD be. (But what would the femslash equivalent be?)

bunglebee · 20/04/2021 12:46

No hits for googling "pork with plot", but I just learned that there is a thing in orbital mechanics called a pork chop plot. 🤔

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/04/2021 12:53

Well it's official - the MN fanfic fans have a crusade - we mustmake 'pork with plot' a proper tag on AO3

bunglebee · 20/04/2021 13:04

I hereby commit to using it on the Sam/Bucky fic I am totally going to write!

Oddly enough, given that I have consumed a great deal of m/m over the years, I've never written it yet, although I have written femslash and het.

MrsGulDukat · 20/04/2021 13:09

Question for the fic writers.

How do you come up with titles. My biggest failing is shit titles. I'm really not good with them. Or summaries.

Grin I'm not really clear on who Sam and Bucky are but I will search the tag and give you kudos if you do Grin

How do you come up with titles. My biggest failing is shit titles. I'm really not good with them. Or summaries.

All my titles are shit - it's the hardest part of writing the whole damn thing! I use a lot of quotes - my Doyle lives rewrites are named after the Whistler quote from becoming part one, and it's prequel is named after another part of the same quote. I did a short Doyle/Cordy fic that I named after a Sarah Connor quote (even though I have never even seen Terminator - but it seemed to fit). And my buffyverse retelling of Beauty and the Beast is called 'Tale as old as Time' because I'm just that original Wink

I think my summaries are slightly better. I started posting on fanfiction.net which has a really tight character count for summaries so I got used really condensing the important bits. I think it was easier having that limit there because it focused my mind. I expand them when I repost on AO3 but it helps to already have the bones of it.

bunglebee · 20/04/2021 13:35

I tend to draw titles from literature/poetry because I am a pompous dick. Hope to use the name When Death is Over from this poem soon.

I try and use a critical bit of dialogue or action from the fic as my summary, but I do struggle with summaries!

Bucky and Sam are from the Marvel Cinematic Universe/Avengers, and most specifically right now starring in their own Falcon & The Winter Soldier show on Disney+.

LeviAckerman · 20/04/2021 13:36

I LOVE fanfic. I write it only in my head. Grin

I read fanfic for every tv show or film that I've ever liked. A fic floozy!
I'm reading marvel stuff atm. Lots of scope to hurt my favourites. Grin

90% in all fandoms seems to be m/m and unless they are a couple in the show I'm not into that as I prefer my relationships canon. A well written m/m will always suck me in though. Grin I do get frustrated trying to find canon stuff at times. I'm all about the bromance hurt/comfort.

bunglebee · 20/04/2021 13:43

Where do you stand on something like Sherlock, where the M/M isn't technically canon but might as well be? Grin I do write and read canon relationships occasionally - I had a real soft spot for Willow/Oz back in the day. I can also recommend a number of novel-length gen/canon relationship Firefly fics. I think it depends heavily on the fandom - there's lots of gen and het in Firefly, essentially none in Sherlock. Reylo is a huge thing in Star Wars.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/04/2021 13:49

Bucky and Sam are from the Marvel Cinematic Universe/Avengers, and most specifically right now starring in their own Falcon & The Winter Soldier show on Disney+

I knew they were an MCU thing - and I know they're a huge pairing right now - but I don't follow the MCU and they're not like Ironman or Hulk in that I've heard of them prior to the MCU taking off so have some idea of who they are. But whoever they are - literally everyone seems to ship them together. Are they canon? Or is it like a Destiel thing? (although Destiel then did become canon)

I prefer my relationships canon.

Me too - I don't ship anybody who isn't an actual ship.

But then I'm such a huge stickler for canon anyway - everything I write I try and keep within the parameters of the show. Almost my every premise is pretty much one tiny change - that could easily happen within the rules of the show - and then a canon divergence from there. 'What ifs' based on massive changes or rules that are different to the inworld rules just don't work for me because in my head I just keep saying: but that's not correct

More power to the people who can write and enjoy the big change stuff, though - but my brain just doesn't work that way.

LeviAckerman · 20/04/2021 13:49

I prefer non m/m in Sherlock. I've never read into it as more than a bromance. I've probably read all the canon stuff in that fandom now. Since it's about 20 fics. 😆

I can understand why people were writing Destiel for years as the writers were definitely messing with us with that! Just give it to us properly fgs. Still not canon now even though people think it is but it's only canon that Cas fancies Dean, not a flicker that Dean felt the same. Wanker writers. 😤

I'm stull upset over that, can you tell? 😂

LeviAckerman · 20/04/2021 13:50

X post about Destiel, haha!

MrsGulDukat · 20/04/2021 14:00

I rarely do canon relationships.

Gul Dukat fics normally have him with Bajoran women. Well I dont play that way. He is with a Human Starfleet officer.

I like play with different relationships.

OP posts:
bunglebee · 20/04/2021 14:02

Bucky/Sam isn't canon, no, in fact they get right up each other's noses and their connection was primarily that they both had a very strong bond with Steve Rogers/Captain America. It's kind of a buddy-cop dynamic. Rare is the mass-market global media that does contain sympathetically portrayed canon same-sex relationships, though. The writers of Sherlock lampshaded it constantly but China was such a huge market for them that they could never have made it canon.

ThankYouKindly · 20/04/2021 14:02

Any Mystrade fans? That is to say Mycroft/Lestrade from BBCs Sherlock. It's a strange one as the two characters shared very little screen time in the actual show but I think that benefits fanfic as it leaves so many gaps to fill with backstory for them both.

Maggiesgirl · 20/04/2021 14:04

@MoChridhe I've written some Outlander Fanfic. I would love to write properly, have tried but get to about 10,000 words and run out of plot Grin

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/04/2021 14:08

Any Mystrade fans? That is to say Mycroft/Lestrade from BBCs Sherlock.

Hmmm - I always thought that Lestrade and Molly should both cut their losses and get together.

MoChridhe · 20/04/2021 14:15

@Maggiesgirl thank you for writing. I actually prefer fanfiction to the original material. I hope your muse returns soon and you post your story. Have you posted any other stories?

There are some really good stories going at the moment. Currently I am enjoying To build a home, In my daughter's eyes Conversations in the dark, a flutter of wings, Imaginary and the Basia Mille Series.

HermioneWeasley · 20/04/2021 14:20

JFC, for the love of an edit button!

PORN with plot. Not pork. Though that may be a sub genre I’ve not discovered yet.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/04/2021 14:24

I love Captain America fic. There’s one that I can’t remember the name of that was a genderbender, where Captain America was a woman and she became less attractive to men when she got bigger and stronger. It was such a good story and described sexism and prejudices (including mh ones) both in the 40s and in the modern day.

bunglebee · 20/04/2021 14:25

Also forgot to say that in Sherlock I'd say the balance of evidence is that Sherlock is canonically gay. Certainly all three of Mycroft, Mrs Hudson and Angelo think he is, and they ought to know. RDJ also said when he played Holmes that he read him as a butch gay man.

Never got into Mystrade; I can see the possibilities, but it just didn't grab me. I was more interested in the Sherlock&Mycroft sibling relationship and did write on that.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/04/2021 14:45

In BBC Sherlock - I think Sherlock's asexual rather than gay - he just isn't interested in any of it. And Mrs. Hudson thinks Watson's gay as well - she didn't believe him when he said he was marrying a woman. She's just the type of person that assumes these two men living together must be a couple and can't get that idea out of her head no matter how many times it is corrected.

I can't think of a time Mycroft intimated Sherlock was gay - though I haven't seen it in years. But like his brother- he doesn't really seem interested in that kind of carry on so I don't know he'd form an opinion.

The writers tease and play around with Sherlock and John but I think it is just teasing because they know what fans are like (as seen in the episode where the girl explains how she thinks he didn't die and has him kissing Moriarty) but ultimately Sherlock is as uninterested in men as he is in women.
