Can some explain like I'm 5?

Why are all the fans, the government, UEFA etc up in arms?

Sorry.... Just not sure what the problem is?

Did Spurs build their billion pound stadium banking on this? Apparently its been afoot since at least 2016. If that's the case then they're gonna have problems.

news.sky.com/story/premier-league-seeks-big-six-clubs-removal-from-committees-after-super-league-debacle-12282771

Executives from clubs which sparked a civil war in English football by joining the now-abandoned European Super League have been handed an ultimatum to step down from key Premier League sub-committees.

Sky News has learnt that Richard Masters, the Premier League chief executive, contacted executives on Wednesday including Bruce Buck, the Chelsea chairman, and Vinai Venkatesham, Arsenal chief executive, to request that they relinquish their roles on the working groups.

BronwenFrideswide · 21/04/2021 19:24

That doesn't surprise me, a commentator was saying how CEO's from the six had sat on committees regarding broadcasting rights and how they could have used the commercially sensitive information gleaned from there for doing deals with broadcasters for the ESL. The PL can't trust them anymore.

I'm more with what John Barnes said - that this wasn't really about fans or sporting values, it was a power struggle between the old guard status quo UEFA and FIFA and the new club owners. "The winner is the status quo which has been exploiting football for years".

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-56829809

As for why it collapsed so quickly, my guess it the clubs didn't expect Boris Johnson to shove his oar in and threaten to make their plans outright illegal. Which to be honest should concern would-be investors in completely unrelated industries: the British government will, if it doesn't like your plans for the company you bought, change the law to stop you.

FloofyMrDarcy · 21/04/2021 20:47

I said on Momday that it was the first time I'd ever agreed with Mr Johnson.

And everything @BronwenFrideswide said. Plus @safariboot

Either way, football is very fucked up now which makes me sad. But then as a 49 yr old lifelong Newcastle United supporter I've known that for quite some time now.

BronwenFrideswide · 21/04/2021 23:14

I think football has been fucked for a fair while FloofyMrDarcy I think this incident exposed another depth to the fucked upness!!

I do hope this triggers a serious rethink and a reset, might be being a tad optimistic there but where there's hope and all that.

I am a bit worried that is the case. Bloody stupid if so. Oh well, let's just sell Kane and Son, that will recoup a bit... Hmm

European Super League: Project is 'on standby', says Real Madrid president Florentino Perez

peaking on the El Larguero show on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Super League chairman Perez claimed all 12 clubs "have not left yet".

"You cannot get out of the contract like this - they are binding contracts," he added.

When asked what the penalty was for leaving the project, Perez did not answer.

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2021 12:17

Perez is not going to give up on his pet project, he needs the money to buy Mbappe And Haaland......

He has been working on this for the last three years, Key Capital Partners, an independent financial firm from Madrid sent around draft of 'binding agreements' already in 2018.
In 2018 they were thinking about 11 + 5 teams:
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Juventus, PSG, AC Milan, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool
Wild cards for Dortmund, Marseille, Atletico, Inter and AS Roma

There is a meme (you know the video from Hitlers movie that everyone keeps making versions about?) it's about Perez being Hitler and him being pissed off cuz now he doesn't have money to pay for the stadium nor to buy Mbappe :D

Who do they think will join the ESL now?

Perez doesn't seem to inhabit the same dimension of reality as the rest of us.

Will be interesting to see what these binding contracts and the penalty clauses for leaving are, unsure if you can leave an organisation that hasn't actually started though? If all the teams that have left just refuse to pay anything or do anything what can Perez do? Stop them playing in the Super League that they aren't playing in anyway?

Presumably he could take them to court for breach of contract?

I expect so, more fool them for signing a legally binding contract for a competition that wasn't sanctioned by the Governing Bodies of football.

BronwenFrideswide · 22/04/2021 23:06

The club owners should be the ones to pay any fines etc., out of their own pockets it should not come out of the Club funds as it appears that members of the Club Boards were kept in the dark, there was no voting on this at any Board Meetings, the only ones who were aware were a very small and secretive sect.

EasterIssland · 22/04/2021 23:11

Spanish news was reporting the other day that uefa had offered cash to the British teams. I’d not surprise if they have to pay a fine the uefa pays it mostly
